View Full Version : My Pedals Blew Up!!!!!1!

Well, not really. But right now two of my pedals don't work when plugged in to my OneSpot. An old overdrive and my EHX Pulsar.
What I think happened is that my little brother plugged them into my Whammy power supply instead of the OneSpot and fried the power input. The pulsar still works with a battery, I haven't tried the OD yet.
I have an idea what's wrong, but haven't had a chance to get in and tinker yet. I was hoping that others on this board (Bernarduur?) might be able to give me some ideas before I just go looking for scorch marks.

If you're lucky, the DC input diode is fried and that's all. Apart from that, get a multimeter and check whether the power is reaching the pedal or if it's discontinued somewhere.

If they work with batteries you haven't much to worry about. Do those particular pedals have an IC on the power input?
As for the overdrive, it's probably a New Op-Amps job.

Yeah, I figure it's just the input diodes gone bad. Especially with the Pulsar, as that still works. If that PS-102 is gone though...I'm going to be killing a little brother. (who outweighs me by a good 30 pounds...and I'm a pretty big guy)

i guess dc power input has a diode, to prevent reversing polarity or getting fried by higher voltage and/or current and it did it's job - prevented the destruction of the circuit by being destroyed. i'm quite sure about this, since the pedal still works on battery. it's a quick fix: replacing one diode. cheap, too - under 10c.

Well, if I remember the PS-102's schematic right, there's nothing really to be fried there. Maybe one capacitor here and there, the IC on a worst scenario, but let's hope it's got a diode protection.

I'll have to check tonight, or more likely, tomorrow night. I'm hoping for a blown diode as I really don't want anything to alter the tone on this OD and I'm pretty superstitious about all the parts in there...

An update. The PS-102 didn't have a diode in the power path, so it looks like the IC is blown. It's a tin can LM741, any preferred replacements?
Also, does anyone have a schematic for the EHX Pulsar? Looks like the power input transistor on this one is gone.

they're not hard to get hold of on ebay. EDIT: the lm741s, i mean

Yeah, I just need to get them. I was hoping I could source all the parts I need from the same source, but it ain't gonna happen. I'm thinking I'll mod my D+ to as close to the same specs as I can so I've got a backup.

Let me know if you can find them pesky diodes. You've been making me want to build one for ages.

Will do. I'll probably just go by specs and get whatever is closest. Ugh, I'm gonna have 30 different $.45 shipments coming in, I know it.
