Hi All!
I know there are a few mac lovers on GG and just recently me and iaresee were talking about mac apps and he suggested we start a thread so here we are! :)

Feel free to post any helpful apps that you use and hopefully we'll compile a nice list to help all the Mac users out there!

To kick start the thread here are some apps that iaresee mentioned to me earlier!
Mailplane
Dropzone
Quicksilver
Growl
SoundSource (indespensible when you use an Apogee Duet)
Caffeine
Dropbox
SysEx Librarian
AppCleaner
NetNewsWire
Picasa (I'm not a big fan of iPhoto)
0xED (for editing SysEx files)
TextWrangler
CoverScout 3
Colloquy (I still use IRC for some things)
Cyberduck (killer FTP program)
HandBrake
Little Snitch
MacTheRipper
iTerm
Transmission
VLC
XLD

To quickly add I also use;
Toast Titanium
Adium
Switch
TubeSock

Enjoy! :)

Good idea!

Soundflower is also handy, lets you map the inputs and outputs of any app/sound source between programs.

Also, I'm sure Mailplane is much easier to set up, but you can make Apple's Mail program check and send from all of your Gmail accounts too.

What's Soundsource? I have a Duet, so I'm curious.

Soundsource is a little app that sits above your screen near the clock which can easily change your input/output sources with the click of a button! Very handy little app :)

Here you go: http://rogueamoeba.com/freebies/

It lets you direct certain audio streams to different devices. So, for example, system sounds DO not play through my Duet. They play through my internal iMac speakers.

Very handy. Simple, elegant. And best of all: free.

Most of the stuff on the list I gave up there are either free or very, very cheap. The exception being CoverScout at about $50 IIRC.

Yeah Ian your list of apps was great, from it I got;

Dropzone
Caffeine
AppCleaner
NetNewsWire
Soundsource
Picasa
Handbrake
TextWrangler
CoverScout

All very very useful apps :) Now my Mac just got even better!

Very cool. I'll have to check that out next time I want to snag a YouTube video's audio stream. The online rippers are hit and miss and never capture the hi-def audio stream.

Also, I'm sure Mailplane is much easier to set up, but you can make Apple's Mail program check and send from all of your Gmail accounts too.
Mail isnt' bad, but it's a different interface from GMail and its integration is so-so. If you want GMail's interface Mailplane gives you just that, but with tight OS X integration.

I'm new to Mac (I haven't even had it a week yet) and apps. I found this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBDBKcI2g9I) video with a few apps I didn't see on the list.

My wife loves WriteRoom (http://www.hogbaysoftware.com/products/writeroom). The developers started giving it away free last week BTW.

I've also stopped using Dropzone and switched to LaunchBar (http://www.obdev.at/products/launchbar/index.html) -- much nicer. Everything is three key presses away. It's completely replaced the QuickSilver + Dropzone combo.

And if you haven't started using Dropbox (https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTg3MDA4ODk) for file sharing yet, I have ask: why not?

Dropbox is awesome! I use it with my band to share riffs/ideas/schedules etc.

Nice.

I'm using LaunchBar now instead of Spotlight to find stuff. And Tweetie for Tweets. And the new HandBrake is awesome.

I've got a folder with all my most used:

1Password (seriously the most useful app you can buy. Paid for itself many times over)
Path Finder (replacement Finder with tabs, drop stack, built in terminal and tons more)
Things (to dos)
Yojimbo (you put everything in it so you can find it)
Tweetie
Textmate (the text editor)
Littlesnapper (screenshots)
Coda (if you make websites you should already be using this)
