In the Steve Vai - For the love of god guitar solo there is a very quick passage (that begin at 3m34s of the beginning of the song on the passion and warfare CD).

I saw it on a video: I expected that was fast picking, but it wasn't. The arm did only few movements. On my tab, it's marked as "BF".

Does anyone know this technic ?

It wasn't sweep picked was it?

Like he ran his fingers over the strings like he was slowly strumming, but played like a lead line with his left hand?

It was a bar flutter :)

I had the answer on another forum.

If you have a Floyd Rose just screw tight the bar so it can't move any more. Then pick a note and strike the bar and leave it vibrate. The note will quickly lightly change pitch and that sounds very cool.
