I definitely wouldn't mind owning a thumb..

My favorite of all time is the Fortress MM, though. Man, what an amazing bass.

You say he won it in a contest? Lucky son of a bitch, I wish I would win something in a contest.

I didn't know it was that great.Just got back from his house and that thing is AMAZING!I sat there and plucked it for like an hour. Then he changed the strings and the thing wouldn't stay in tune.I left.

I love Warwicks, the bassist of Mudvayne usses them. I saw Mudvayne at Summer Sanitarium this year and DAMN he can get some sweet sounds out of his bass.

I take it he won the bolt-on version (easily $1500). Warwicks are sweet. The only problem I've had with mine is a lot of neck dive, meaning the bass is difficult to hold at a normal playing angle and often slides down.

Bolt on? Oh, **** that!

Wow, I don't feel so pissed any more. LOL.

When I buy MY Warwick, you can be assured it'll have a through neck!

What do you mean about the sliding? I've not played a REAL Warwick, but I've played the little cheap versions ("Rockbass BY Warwick"), and I'm pretty sure the proportions are the same, aren't they? And I thought it was actually the most comfortable bass I'd tried. Much better than the Fender/Squier P and Jazz.

What's so bad about bolt ons?

Just a little less sustain, that's all.

And, neck-thrus have their pitfalls too. If the neck gets warped or damaged then the entire instrument is screwed. And, I read in an article by one pro bassist (I forgot who, but he's important!) who said that he always noticed that in neck through basses, the notes always seem to get louder and more pronounced near the 12th fret, and he's never had that problem with bolt ons.

Eh. I think they're overrated. My friend had one, and maybe it was just that I don't like 5-strings because the strings are too close together, but it was actually pretty uncomfortable. No matter what other bass I use, I always come back to my comfy ol' P-bass that my sister gave me when she stopped playing bass. No other kind of bass has ever felt as good to me, although I have yet to try a Rick. But J-basses, a violin bass, Warwicks, Ernie Balls; none of them feel as just plain right as my $300 P-bass (the only problem is past the 12th fret, it buzzes).

P.S. Does anyone else think that Warwicks are kind of ugly?

Day'sSweetDaze

Ugly? Oh, poo! I think Warwicks are the best looking basses out there. I was watching a live recording of MuDvAyNe some months ago, and I was just like, wow, what IS that amazingly sexy instrument that amazingly sexy Ryan Martinie is pounding away at? Since then I've been noticing them everywhere. I do indeed like P Basses, but Warwicks are just the greatest basses ever, look, sound, feel, etc. I need to take a field trip over to Vegas and win three grand. ;)

I have to say that Warwicks aren't the prettiest basses (Rickenbacker 4003s hold that position, no question in my mind), but the natural oil finish REALLY enhances its visual appeal. Oil doesn't look good on too many body shapes but it is absolutely beautiful on a Warwick. If you've ever seen a Warwick with a gloss finish you know what I mean.

I played a fretless Warwick a while back and the sound amazed me. However, I have lifted anvils that weighed less. Argh, my back!

Thats really awesome that he won that, be proud of your bassist. I just dont like the warwick thumb that much because of the lack of bass produced by the pickups and were they are positioned. As you can hear in Mudvayne's music alot of the bass is lost because of the pickup positions. Oh well, maybe slap some bartolinis or seymour duncan's in there and you've got no problems at all. Hey! thats a good idea i'll do that to my thumb when it arrives next month!

Actually, if you do a side to side comparison of a Thumb Neck-Thru vs. Bolt-on, there is more of a difference. The best part of Warwicks is how they construct their Neck-Thru with multiple tiers of exotic wood; in the Thumb's case, it is Bubinga, Ebony and Ovangkol with a Wenge fingerboard. The sustain and tone is incredible and leaves the Bolt-On, which is only Ovangkol with a Wenge neck, rather flat. I also love the tapered feel of the Neck-Thru; the Bolt-On's neck has a marked chuckiness in comparison.

In my opinion, Warwick Thumbs have incredible bass response; I think pick-up position is a moot point in this issue (Music Man basses and other humbucker basses have the pick-up in roughly the same position as the Thumb 5; resting one's thumb on the pick-up and attacking the strings that close to the bridge does reduce bass but you can compensate for that) and has more to do with the electronics and body wood; mine has stock EMGs which sound great and I think that bubinga is a great sounding wood for a bass.

Also, Warwick has five- and six-string models with wider spacing. Good stuff for slapping.

I'm aware of the differences between the Warwick Thumb Bolt on and neck through MODELS.. I'm just talking about bolt on necks in general. Just the way Days was talking about bolt ons suggested she has the same feelings toward most bolt ons. Forgive me if I'm wrong.

I just prefer the idea of through neck anythings because they seem stronger and sturdier. You can play the hell out of them AND beat people to death without them breaking. :D

But, when it breaks, then what are you going to do? :p

On a bolt on you can just slap on a new neck and go on with the beating, but with a neck through you're screwed.

Instructions for making your neck thru give you the "smashed nuts" feeling

1. Set up your rig to the illest sound imaginable, but don't play a note yet.

2. Raise your very expensive unrepairable guitar/bass over your head while the feedback rings around your ears

3. Now smash the ****er down right in front of you and make sure that the headstock hits the ground first. You'll hear one of the most lovely/god=awful sounds ever: the sound of all the strings losing tension in a millisecond as the headstock snaps off of the neck.

Now stand there for a minute, it should be creeping in about now as you look at your ruined investment/instrument. , yep, that's the feeling.

BTW... This only works for POOR musicians who can't afford to buy another guitar/bass for a while...
