Define industrial. If it included NIN it isn;t industrial.
How is NIN not industrial?
I was under the impression that you could sample the bass and guitar parts for industrial music.

I just think NIN is a rock band with synths. I have a different view on industrial is all(I've been around the industrial world for a LONG time).

In my opinion , the Stingray is the ONLY way to go. Look at NIN, Zeromancer, Stabbing Westward. They sound great regaurdless of your set up. It's the only bass i used when i was doing session work. It's a gorgeous machine.
AND perhaps NIN and SW may not be industrial in the same vein as say a front line assembly, Skinny Puppy, Front 242 and the like, but regaurdless a good bass is a good bass.

I would assume either synths are used or enough effects that it wouldn't matter what brand the initial signal pushing device is.
It also depends on the definition of industrial...say Alien Sex Fiend style...synth all the way, Pigface used live bass a bit when I saw them years ago, but there was enough distortion on it that it didnt matter what bass was used. (it was a fender p-bass I think, but that was over 10 yeasr ago so my memory is a bit foggy)

i'm going for a Fear Factory/Zeromancer sound, w/ tinges of wumpscut and Die Krupps.
The Fender bass i'm looking for is the same one Christian from FF used. http://fearfactory.com/images/bandpics/live_9_full.jpg
im also looking for a good amp. i was thinking about an Ampeg SVT-2Pro head, but dont know what kind of cab.

That looks like the Roscoe Beck Signature Bass. Here (http://www.fender.com/gear/gear.php?partno=0196500).
The ampeg SVT cabs are good, I play though a 410 HLF which does me pretty well, basically anything in that series is a quality cab, just depends on what range you're looking for.

that does look like the Roscoe Beck bass, except the electronics are different.
i just need something thats gonna let me be heard over the other people in the band. my drummer is so loud i dont even know if we should mic him for shows.

Nor is fear factory industrial. Industrial is Throbbing Gristle.
theres different kinds of industrial. Ministry and Cabaret Voltaire sound nothing alike, but they're both industrial.
Fear Factory is Industrial to an extent. listen to Remanufacture.

I don't know, it's very different and much fighting happens.
I am from a industrial background, and am still a active member in the local industrial scene, but what we call industrial is VERY differnt from the textbook version of it. forgetten is NIN, EBM, bad synth pop, and even a fewer of the more well know acts.....
I don't know, Industrial changes city to city.
My ultimate fight with the local DJ is about godflesh and where they fit in.....and even modern music is changing there placement(through bands like Isis who obviously have listen to alot of godflesh in there time).
Fear Factory, I would say are not industrial....they do have a lot of influence to them, and pay tribute to that sound with there re-mix albums, but they also know the core of there newer fans are not into that sort of sound.
though, this arguement is even more tired the the "What is Emo?" on in my mind, as I have been having it for .....10 years?
**** i feel old.
im not calling Fear Factory straight-up indsutrial. theres definitely more metal than industrial. but they're one of the first bands to combine indsutrial and metal (Ministry, KMFDM, and Godflesh being the others). but what's really sad is that most FF fans dont know who Rhys Fulber and Bill Leeb are, even tho they've done many FF remixes.
Godflesh really isnt indsutrial, but some sort of industro-grindcore hybrid. grindcore is basically an combo of experimental noize (Throbbing Gristle, Einsturzende Neubauten) and Death Metal (Death, Cannibal Corpse).
If you havent, try listening to The Berzerker. much more confusing than Godflesh.

Well looks like the only logical thing to do here is not play industrial music. Just go pop punk like i did.
Oh wait then you'll have problems with people saying your not punk enough.
Ok, best idea
Sell all your gear and go to church, work 9-5 and die.
because now i know Music is for labels, and labels are for jars.
Ps- get a stingray and a Boss metal zone. that would be such a wickidly crazy trashy tone. I do like the boss bass distortion alot tho, A LOT.
That and a Small Clone makes an awesome Type O Negative meets Skinny Puupy sorta tone.

Any prolonged discussion on whether or not this or that band is this or that genre is, in my opinion, futile. I've seen quite a number of these discussions on other boards, and they never end up with anything constructive. Fact of the matter is, that everybody has different definitions on which band is what.
Anyways, on the subject of this topic, I'd say that almost any bass could be used for it. It's as much with the effects and amp/cabs that the tone is shaped.

Get a Minimoog, dude. The Voyager is pretty awesome, but even a vintage one would do. It is THE definitive synth bass sound, I think it would suit that music pretty damn well.

I agree with the Stingray and the Small Clone, but don't go with the Boss Metal Zone, go with a Big Muff. I A/B'ed them both and the Muff has a much nicer growl. The Boss Bass Overdrive is useless with bass, my girlfriend tried to make it work with her Jazz and she could never get a tone that she (or anyone else) liked.

hmm...yeah that would be much more soothing to the ear. I mearly suggesting the Metal Zone for that usless yet screachy tone that sounds cool one every month, and for 20 seconds at a time.
