Anal Bum Cover?? What do you mean? It says AN ALBUM COVER.. perv. (Cheers, SNL)
:D So, whats the best album cover art, ever? You can do this a couple of ways.. 1.) Look at how well it reflects the music upon the album, or 2.) simply as art (as in.. it can be the worst band ever, but it may have a nice cover). Either way will do, lets just talk album covers.
I think many would agree with Pixies-Surfer Rosa.. OH YEAH. Because.. it... uh.. matches with the song Cactus well, thats all.
tool-Ænima's cover art is also very cool. Long live holographic, moving stuff.

"OK Computer" - Radiohead
"The Beatles" - The Beatles
"Abbey Road" - The Beatles
etc.
Sgt. Peppers .... hands down the winner for me. There is so much on that cover to see, plus all of the symbolism that is hidden in it is amazing...
London Calling.... angst at its finest, makes you want to smash a guitar on stage
1984.... something about an angel smoking a cigarette works...
Ten.... I like the solidarity of the band

Ann(one of the members) is on an operating table giving C-section birth to a Moog Rogue synthesizer. The only CD I've ever bought based on the cover alone.

Monster Magnet--Spine of God--It's a Satanic Drug thing, You wouldn't understand!
Yes--Tales from Topographical Oceans--I can't stand Yes & the album title is obtuse as hell, but it still looks really cool.
Beatles--Rubber Soul--they had the best haircuts at that point in their career.

I just have to add that is one of my favorite all time albums! Cool info on the it! thanks for posting that.
I always liked Edwin McCains Far From Over. Far From Over shows him walking along the beach with his acoustic and a hat on. In all the pictures you can't see his face, but you know it's him. This was also an unauthorized photo shoot for the album, and he consequently was released from Atlantic records.
Their loss!

I love Joy Division's album covers. Austere, solemn and straight to the point artwork. Same with post-Violator Depeche Mode.

i'm a big fan of the work peter saville did for factory - joy division, new order, etc. such amazing design. i love the fact that one of his designs contributed to the economic downfall of the label (the blue monday single was to expensive to manufacture that they lost money for every copy sold - it turned out to be the highest selling 12" of all time).
alot of the chicago stuff that came out in the 90s was great too - all the fireproof press (i don't know if i have the name right) stuff like shellac, june of 44 and tortoise. really amazingly printed custom cd sleeves, usually with some kind of extra touch (like cheesecloth bags or handmade stamps). there are still lots of cd designs influenced by this - ikara colt and division of laura lee come to mind.
between the buttons is an all-time fave of mine. something about it is so off-the-cuff and perfect.

Looks like there's someone here who digs JD and New Order!
I have to concur that Shellac's, Tortoise's etc album cover artwork is super-cool. However, my all-time favourite sleeve has to be the one for Unknown Pleasures. It's zen-perfect.

The artwork on the Flaming Lips' "Transmissions from the Sattelite Heart" fit nicely with the music: the oddly-shaped speakers, the 24 string guitar..really cool.
