Hello all!
I am looking for that "Chainsaw" sound! For example...
Eddie Van (old days), Night Ranger (opening of Still rock in America), alot of the "Big Hair" bands have it! So....what is it?
Delay, chorus, or distortion?, or a combination of all of them.
I have a POD 2.0, the sound aint there! I am tweakin the knobs!

a lot of that sound is in the PAF at the bridge of the Frankenstrat. You might also want to try a phase effect.

Yeah... the trebly-ness of a strat helps that alot.

VI and JA....
I have a Squire also!
I have found in experimenting, that "chorus" seems
to enhance the sound to get a "chainsaw" effect.

Do we all agree?

The "PAF"....which version and why?
I have a Super Distortion at hte bridge.

They have a good example at http://www.guitartricks.com Just go there and search for it in their search engine.

A PAF is a DiMarzio pick up!

hahahaha.

in all seriousness. paf's are the 'patent applied for' pickups they had in older gibsons and what not. dont quite know the story behind them.. if any..

Really?
So simple!, it boggles the mind! I guess DiMarzio must have
made those things...they are on their website( "PAF").
So....again wich version is the origional used in all those
80s hair bands?

Hey Chud!
Yeah man......the JCM800 is REAL close! I have a POD 2.0
and if I leave "cab emulation" off she really saws!....once I add
a "cab"...all the power fades away!:(

I have really good luck with the Mesa Boogie amp and your
settings...really, really close!...add a "cab".....

The Marshall "cabs" seem to work best...not too much bottom
end, not muddy. Some "cabs" sound like your guitar is underwater!

I dont have to add a "cab", but, if I dont, waaaay too much high
end!

I may have to try a "PAF" or a "FRED" and see how these
PUs respond to my wood, steel and electrogadgets!

Keep those suggestions commin!!!!:D

Drop me a line at googuitars@shaw.ca I have quite a few settings for this sound but the POD 2.0 is lacking my friend. You need the chip upgrade or get the newPODxt.
As was mentioned before the JCM 800 is all you need, it is the amp that made this sound famous afterall. The Soldano setting can also get you there.Try Bass 11, mids 6, treble 0, presence 9, and don't over do it on the gain, you need to be somewhere before the preamp tubes go into saturation. This is usually achieved just before the second gain stage cuts in. So aim for a gain setting of around 5-7.
As for the cabinet (emulater) choice, go for a 4+12 with vintage style speakers.

PAF is the origional humbucking pickup design that was done for Gibson by a gent named Seth Lover and is well known for it's warmth. Just about all pickup manufacturers make a version of the PAF some even calling it the PAF because this was not a patented name just an abbreviation.
Joe satriani's Dimarzio "Fred" bucker is basically a hot PAF.

Hope this helps

Hey folks!
Now I feel stupid!:o
I was reading my POD manual about "AIR" settings and found
I had never set up the "cabinet tuning" for my system.
Well "holy buckets!"...what a difference a setting makes!
I now have POWER to my equipment and things sound like they
should!
The damn POD actually works! :D
The "cabs" no longer sound the same, and they dont kill the power!
The "chainsaw" has arrived!! The JCM 800 does the trick and
then some!

Thanks for all the posts!!! ;)

Just wanted to clarify: Dimarzio didn't make PAFs. They copyrighted the name first. Gibson made the PAF--which they now sell as the '57. Duncan makes the '59, which is the best of the crop, though I hear good things about the Fralins.

Hey Jackass!
WTF!....is a Fralin??
Are the Duncans pretty "growley"?

Thanks!

Fralin is Lindy Fralin, the famed pickup maker...supposed to be one of the best around.

Seth Lover=PAF see my prior post on this thread for a brief history.
As for the one that was use by most 80's hair metal acts...there was the Dimarzio Distortion, the origional hot PAF, it was very popular for some time in the early 80's then Seymour started to take over the market with his "Distortion" ... hot PAF.
There are so many pickups out there that are modeled after the PAF, but to me the Seymour Duncan is the closest thing.
For anyone here who has read some of my other posts you will know I am a big George lynch fan sooooo...don't take this as a plug...The Seymour Duncan Screamin Demon is an awsome pickup that blends classic PAF with a with a modern flair, most people who try it expect high output ( George Lynch ) but to the contrary you get a medium output pickup that stays true to the guitar your using and is voiced similar to a PAF but with a little more bass and a little less mids, great cabinet chunk ( or something close ) is what the SD site says. I definetly recommend this pickup on it's own merits.

i would try a treble-y strat with a wah wah set all the wah forward and a phaser. just make sure you have a noise surpressor so you don't destroy your ears.:D
