Hey, I'm looking to get my bassist girlfriend a distortion pedal for Christmas. We play post-punk (Husker Du meets Interpol). She's been using the Boss bass distortion with her Fender Jazz and it sucks. We tried the Sansamp Bass Driver and it doesn't have enough gain (although it sounds great). Any suggestions?

BTW, she uses a Trace Elliot head with an Eden cab, and we tune down to D.

The top 3 bass distortion pedals in my opinion would be

Budda Phat Bass
Fulltone Bassdrive
EH Russian Big Muff

If you're looking for a gain monster go with the Bassdrive, if you want some amazing tone but less distortion go Budda, if you want the "Muff" sound go muff. Try to track those down and give them a try.

Just so you know, I went down to the local guitar emporium (several, actually) and tried out various distortion pedals with Jazz basses and various amps. The winner? A re-issue Russian Big Muff!!!! (golf claps). My girlfriend was most touched (and I'm not going to follow that line of thought any further!). Some girls go giddy when they get flowers, others go giddy over distortion pedals . . . :p

Thanks to everyone who posted here. Cheers.:)

Although I like my Big Muff for bass, there are a few pedals I've preferred:
-Marshall Shredmaster, with all the knobs set all the way up (this got stolen, but I only used it for bass anyway)
-Pro Co Vintage Rat, which can be more of a nasty, overwhelming fuzz. But in a good way.
-DOD Bass Grunge, which has a dry out and a blend control. It has terrible knob labels, but the Blend control is extremely useful. I wish more distortion pedals had one.
However, since you got the Big Muff anyway, glad that she liked it. I wish that my girlfriend could play an instrument, but she's amazing as it is anyway. How is being in a band with someone you're dating?

i've really been digging my t-rex mudhoney on bass. keeps the bottom and get get a wide range of dirty tones - including over the top fuzz.

It's really cool, actually. We're a really solid unit. We were really good friends for about a year-and-a-half before we got together, and she was in my band for six months already (we play in three bands, one of which is showcasing in NYC in November).

She's the sort of bass player drummers like playing with: doesn't have massive chops but she's melodic and solid as a rock. No-one I've ever talked to has a bad thing to say about her (even before we started dating). The drummer in my band is cool with the situation: I make sure there's no "inner circle" within the band and we're all mature enough to keep that state of affairs. She'll disagree with me on certain issues, I'll disagree with her and there's no hard feelings.

I was dating somebody <ahem> less than stellar before I got together with her. As one of my closest friends put it, "You traded ground chuck for filet mignon!"

Russian Big Muff, of course. It has more fuzz to it.
