ok so the guitarists had a fave tone thread so why cant we. it takes a lot of knob tweaking to cut though the mix to be heard and find a tone to complement your guitarist. so be heard!

justin chancellor (tool)-all about those high mids
mike kroeger (nickleback)
mike inez (AIC)
les claypool- he just gets some of the weirdest distortions
robert mercurio (galactic)
feildy- even though he motly does percussive slaps, hes original
p-nut (311)- gets that nice punch and grunt
jason newstead (post-black album)- gets a nice growl
rex brown (pantera)- you cant really describe his tone

I love Paul McCartney's tone on Sgt. Pepper, and JPJ's tone on Zeppelin 1 and 2, I guess these are the reasons I switched to flatwound strings on my Rickenbacker.

Chris Squire's got that legendary, Clavinet-like sound too, nobody's even come close. "Roundabout" and "The Fish" are great.

You can hear Jason Newsted's bass? =)

And of course, Jaco's tone on "Portrait of Tracy", a fretless Jazz plus an Acoustic 360 amp. It's a beautiful thing.

Dirk Lance- Incubus, S.C.I.E.C.E. very very amazing tone

Stefan Lessard- Dave Matthews Band, Under the Table and Dreaming, very funky

Mike Pope- Mike Pope, Walk your dogma, very jazzy

John Pattittucci- Amazingly jazzy, aguilar ooooo

Ryan Martinie- MuDvAyNe, the end of all things to come, very heavy metal

I would have to say Lemmy from Motorhead has the best tone in my opinion. (ok ok, so what if he just sounds like a distorted down-tuned guitar?)

Ryan Martinie from MuDvAyNe, no contest as far as I'm concerned. I think he's the all around best bassist who ever lived with the best bass ever crafted and the best bass sound ever rendered.

That would be Paul D'amour my good man, and i think he was the original bass player from tool. I also dig Morgan from The Blood Brother's tone its so awesome, it sounds really thumpy to that nice jazz bass cut.

definitely Tool, when he uses the chorus on some of those aenima songs, its perfect.

also the bass tone on Refused-shape of punk to come is dead on.

Ok well... right now im listenin to Schism by Tool, and it has a great bass sound. I usually enjoy a nice punchy, treble-tinged bass sound. But I recently picked up a copy of Sailing the Seas of Cheese(Primus), and I think Les Claypool is the best bass player ever. The cool thing is that you dont usually notice how mucha kick ass guitarist larry lalonde is but les claypool sticks out. Its awesome. Not a specific tone, but the playing somehow makes the tone sound better than if he played down picked eighth notes like most bassists do. Just awesome. Sgt. Baker is a great song! Oh yeah, Matt Freeman of Rancid has a REALLY good tone too. The bass solo on Maxwell Murder speaks for itself.

Tim C in audioslave has a massive bass tone. Especially live, It just sounds HUGE.

i like dirk lances, and chris from muse.

Also, who can deny the awesomeenss of justin from tool's tone? it IS perfect for what he does.

Joe D. Stortion
02.16.04, 1:43 PM
John Entwistle, he did all of it first. Listen to the runs he did on "My Generation", "The Real Me", and many many others.

Lightining fast playing with a tone that cuts through everything. It barely even sounds like bass when you hear it by itself.

There is only one person who is doing things differently these days and that is
Robert Turner (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club)

Such an amazing tone nouthing like it around today

He Has
Epiphone Riveoli Bass (hollow body) with bass humbucker in the neck(red)
Epiphone Hollowbody Bass, 2 pickups (vintage sunburst "backup")
into 2 Ampeg Heads (dunno which model)
into 2 8x10 cabs
with an Ibanez Tube Screamer to get the distortion

Listen to his playing on White Plams of the first album it's amazing

Buddha

P.S
he uses a super thick gibson plectrum all of the time

Yeah I totally agree with that.

Tina Weymouth from the talking heads/tom tom club has really good tone, very punchy

Tim From Rage has some very good tones. punchy low and beefy. especially on evil empire tracks such as people of the sun and vietnow. The beginning of "tire me" is probaly my favorite bass tone ever

Robert Turner (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club)

While it is an interesting tone, it doesnt seem all that unique to me, actually it seems a mimic of the bass tone from almost every early Jesus and Mary Chain album, as well as the self titled Love and Rockets album. That not withstanding I do love the band and the tone.

Talent?!
02.26.04, 10:53 AM
Lemmy-like a distorted guitar (nuff said)
Stu Hahm-punchy
Justin Chancellor (Tool)- unique
Geezer Butler-rocking
Steve Harris-cuts through 3 lead guitars, nuff said

I love his "in and out" playing on "Airbag", those little complicated lines during "Paranoid Android", and he does some complicated stuff in "Optimistic". But i'm a fan of his playing all across the board.

Just a bit of info, did you know Thom played the bassline in "The National Anthem"?

John Entwistle was the man (how exactly did he seperate his high end from his low end anyway?).

Flea of course has almost always had a good bass tone.

Simon Gallup had an awesome tone on Distintegration.

Robert Turner's bass has a good tone (even if it's a lot like J&MC, who also happen to have a cool bass tone).

Kim Deal's bass sound on Doolittle is just awesome.

Stone Roses have an awesome bass tone on their first album.

Beck's bassplayer, Justin Meldal-Johnsen gets an awesome sound, all the time.

Finally, Carlos Dengler from Interpol has a great, great tone on "Turn off the Bright Lights". It just stands out.

I LOVE his tone on that album, especially on tracks like 'One Hundred Years'. I believe he's playing a Rickenbacker 4001 with a ****load of effects.

mudvayne bassist- original popping sound for metal...i like it
jason newstead- I like that "VOOM" sound he makes in justice for all but didn't showcase any skill....just followed james's root note most of the time.
Les Claypool- When it comes to slap, i prefer him over flea cuz his tone style is more out of this world it think....flea and him are probably very close when it comes to skill though.
Victor Wooten- This guy dominates all, he's the black Steve Vai of bass and can make awesome tones with artificial harmonics.

The out playing on airbag is great, you're right. I also love the bass parts to: How to dissapear completly, Exit music, Go to sleep, Dollars and cents, and another song in HTTT, I dont remember which.

you can talk all you want about effects and this and that sound.. there's only one sound EVER that will do for me..

and that is an orange Ad200-bass with a ibanez pd7-distortion + an ampeg 8x10 and my jazzbas or a thunderbird..

so sit down, shut up and believe it.. :D :D

I can honestly say that i've listened to ...And Justice For All hundreds of times in my life and have never heard any bass on any of the tracks...It was mixed too low...

Kill 'em All:Aside from Anesthesia (obviously), the bass does really shine in many spots, but there are also parts where I can't hear a thing, like Whiplash.
Bass Highlights: The Four Horsemen, Jump in the Fire, No Remorse, Seek and Destroy Metal Militia.

Ride the Lightning: For the most part, the bass really struggles to be heard. It was mixed very low. In general, Ride the Lightning was mixed pretty terribly. But pretty much no key bass moments are to be HEARD.
Bass Highlights: Call of Ktulu (Basically features Cliff going nuts with effects, but again, it's mixed so low that it's barely heard)

Master of Puppets: A much better effort then Ride the Lightning, bass-wise. There are incredible spots like Orion, and there are also subtle moments like in Disposable Heroes. But in any spot, you can really hear the growl of Cliff's bass throughout the album.
Bass Highlights: Orion (The bass solo at around 6:30 or 6:40 is simply amazing, from the guitar-like tone to the harmonization), Damage Inc. (That intro is ALL bass!)

...And Justice For All: Jason's first album with the band must have been forgettable for him. As part of his "hazing", his bass was mixed so low that it simply cannot be heard. Very funny, James.

Metallica: Jason's growling and grumbling Spector can be heard basically everywhere on the album, very refreshing for Metallica's bass-playing fans. The album was mixed very well in general, so thank Bob Rock for letting the bass be heard!
Bass Highlights: My Friend of Misery, The God That Failed, The Unforgiven, Wherever I May Roam, Nothing Else Matters

Load, ReLoad: Good tone, good mixing overall. Jason has his standout moments throughout both of these albums, which were recorded at the same time. The flowing fretless line that serves as the intro to Until it Sleeps was actually played by James, but who's counting? :D
Bass Highlights: Until it Sleeps, King Nothing, Probably a few others, I can't really remember...

St. Anger: Bass? What's a bass?

...Confessions of a teenage metalhead :D ...
