I'm curious, how many of you singers have certain records that you sing along with to practice? I find that singing along to stuff (well, attempting to) seems to give me greater control of my voice which I need. Oh yeah, and if so, what do you sing along with? I using pink floyd and the clash.

i turn on the oldies station and sing to those songs. whatever song happens to be on and if i know the words to 'em. i listen to a lot of oldies so i have a good knowledge of those songs.
i like to sing along to the oldies because i usually know the words, they're fun songs to sing along too at the top of your lungs, and many songs have vocalists with a wide range so i can warm up my entire vocal range.

Pretty much anything I hear I sing along with. My singing has gotten so much better in the past few years (it still sucks though), just because I do it so much.

I sing along to anything I know the words to. Usually in my truck with the radio cranked right up.

i sing along to the deftones, it helps warm up your voice i think and i just do backing vox in my band, but chino moreno has a cool voice. wanna stretch your higher registers then try singing along with the be quiet and drive acoustic mix, kinda creepy falsetto going on. or jawbreaker is fun to sing along to as well.

I find incubus songs are great to sing along to for practice. They are one of my faivourite bands and he has an amazing voice to give you a good workout. I think enything thatyou like and know all the words to is good to sing along to anyway..keep your voice in shape

any advice for actually making your voice better - say to a john frusciante or pete townshend style?
Lots of stuff, but I especially like APC and tool because I love maynards voice. It made me get help with my singing because I wanted to be able to sing like him.
Evidently not enough help though, cos as my singing gets better my health deteriorates. I'm currently recovering from ANOTHER throat infection. Note to self-stop smoking.

I think it is very difficult/impossible to learn how to improve your singing if the problem is you cant keep tune and keep going flat or whatever, if so singing may not be your thing:D. However if you are in tune, its usually breathing which makes a huge difference on the sound and how long you can hold a note. I'm no expert, but standing up straight and getting the biggest volume for your lungs is apparently a good technique (the other singer in our band had done laods of choir and stuff before). I heard singing coaching can help quite a lot too.
:o <-- looks like a buy trying a bit too hard to sing :D

Early Radiohead is fantastic stuff for me. Thom has an awesome range, the highs are slightly beyond me, but only on the highest notes, and the falsetto workout can be great.
