i am a singer/songwriter that is lookin for a good delay/loop pedal. i play mostly acoustic(that i plug into my amp) but when i use feedback i use my strat. i have a fender hot rod deluxe, a dunlop crybaby, a boss ce-5, boss ds-1(for overdrive, but with my other distortions is the 'feedback fixer'), a dod distortion that is my pure static pedal. but i am really into pink floyd, radiohead, damien rice, elliot smith, beatles. i basically play prog rock, folk rock, and i play mostly solo but sometimes i play with a bassist, drummer and/or backup singer/ harmony vocalist. any help/suggestions of what delay/loop pedal to get. i was lookin at the line 6 dl4, and the boss loop station and the giga delay. please help, thanks.

...cool...you seem to like all of the same stuff as me. That Damien Rice album is lovely...pure sit-back and relax music...really moving.

Anyway, back to your question...i have an Akai Headrush...and it does the job brilliantly. Has a 14 second sampler, standard delay and tube echo simulator.

Great pedal.

the RC-20 stores loops. I have the above mentioned loops, plus a akai headrush, and as a Songwriting tool, the RC-20 is incredible. Beside the storage of loops, it is a really no frills sampler. No pitchshifting, no delays, backwards looping. The footswitches take a little to get used to as you have to start closing the loop before it ends. Like 30ms or the loop is off.

Though, on the flip side, if you write at a four track, I would suggest the DL-4 as it has a Looper with a built in 800ms delay. Pretty much a boss DD-3. You could assign a expression pedal to it and control the delay level, so you can have part with massive delay, and some with no delay at all. Also, the DL-4 is the easiest looper to time the opening and closing of loops with in the pedal world. Added feature to the looper is the delay(which self oscillates and makes weird sounds), a backward function, and a half speed which you can use to create 28 second loops.

IMO. Get a DL-4 unless you want to play back samples live. The RC-20 is great for taht...I personally use both, the DL-4 for instrumental stuff(real time improv) and the RC-20 to store song bits. But I have made do with just the dl-4 before. Also, it will add a delay(with the expression to control it, or the delay will always be on)to the loop. very useful tool in looping is a delay.

But are good. Both are different.

I wouldn't recommend the Akai Headrush or the DD-20 as a first looper.

does the dd-20 have any looping/reverse capabilities?

no, no, it's a great first looper. Why not start with the best. Less time wasted on loopers that don't do everything that a looper should do.

I just figure you should start with a DL-4, less money and will give you a good idea if looping is for you. Also, will work as a good delay if you get a DEP later on.

The EDP is also really expensive for a first looper IMO. Far over $1000(usually, I know you got yours for a very good price). that is quite the investment if you conclude that it is not for you.

Only now(like the last few month) have I concluded I will buy a EDP in the next year. And that is after years of looping. I have to admit, I am waiting for a pedal version with SM/CF storage abilities to appear. I wish line 6 would makes a dedicated pedal version, with undo's, a SM/CF storage ability, and a built in delay that you can hook a footswith to(to turn off and on). That would be excellent. Because of the advances in technology, I really am waiting to see if someone take the EDP and runs with it by adding modern ideas(not to say the EDP isn't modern, it is just, well, a touch....out of date is the wrong way of putting it. It lacks feature because of it's age, and these could be added onto it to make it even more powerful)

I also want to see about the looping section in a Digitech GNX 3.....It does interest me greatly(as I could leave the unit on my amp and use the remote switch to loop with, and it stores to SM(or CF, either or)).

I can answer personally...because it was a question of spending $250 and having something now, or saving money for a year and dropping a grand on an echoplex. But if you've got the cash...

I wish I could get a government grant for gear expenses...

For me a EDP is gonna be well over $1500. A Line 6 was $374.

I am planing on getting one, as I have defidently stuck with looping. The GNX 3 is the other possibility, but remote(unless I get one for $400 or so).

I've just started using loops with my DL-4, and I find it's pretty handy. Last night, I recorded a bass line (using a metronome to make sure that the loop was timed properly) with the echo off, then while it was playing, plugged my guitar in, turned the echo on, and jammed for a good eight minutes. Although you have to reach down and manually turn the echo knob, I found it to be incredibly useful.

However, if the RC-20 can store loops...
