just wanna know....

it seems like you people dont appreciate good talent and musicanship. you poeple run down ibanez guitars, and hail fender and gibson who like to rip people off. i dont mean to make people mad, but just my opinion.

so how old is everyone, and how much have you spent on guitars, and whats the most you would spend on getting your dream guitar? just curious.

for me, im 17, and i bought 2 fenders, deluxe fat strat= $475 and a spider=more expensive

and just bought a jem7dbk=$1400 total

Why, hello to you too.

18 years old.

Gretsch Synchromatic Sparkle Jet- US$300 used.

Godin LGXT- US$1600 new, on special.

I don't skimp for tone. I would pay upwards of US$2500 for my dream guitar, if I had the cash. Luckily I found an awesome one for $1600.

Most of us don't run down Ibanez- we just find those gawdy superstrat guitars offensive on the eyes.

I'm 22, and i generally only like to spend between 300-800, but in some cases i will spend much over that, but thats only for those "special" guitars!

Yeah i like ibanez's too but i understand what your saying about gibsons and fenders but they DO make really good guitars, but ibanez isnt exactly good to their customers either! Have you ever had to deal with customer support, or had warranty issues, or needed replacement parts? When you try to contact them for any of these problems, their help is virtually non-existent, and i have bought all my ibanez products new, and i have yet to get even one warranty card back from them!

I'm 17 and i spent 500 with tax on my last guitar which was my kramer.

I would not pay 2000 grand for a gibson, but then again i dont' really like gibsons all too much (too small of fret wire for me and too fat of necks) My dream fender is 1200 (american delux) i'd be glad to spend that much, but i dont' have that much to spend.

Hey hows the jem, i'd really like to try one out sometime but no music stores one to try

im 18... i probably have about $2000 in guitar gear... the only guitat i ever bought new was a fender tele for about 700... i traded it for a samick hollowbody a few weeks back... im a funk machine now...

lucky13sp

i'm 14 (as of 3 weeks ago) and have
samick Sg = $390 nz ( $230us)
big muff = $195nz ( $135us)
samick 30 watt amp = $ 180nz ( $120us)

that does seem kind of crazy, my big muff costing more than my amp, but the amp sucks anyway so it was a good price i guess.

i'd pay up to 2-3 thousand american for a really really really awesome used vintage Gibson 1962 lp junior maybe, but otherwise samick's are cheap as and the neck's fit my hands like a hot knife through butter.

but my dream guitar is a jet caldera, go check them out at ww.jetguitars.com/
the prices for that guitar start at $4,900us, and no i'm not joking, because it's 100% handmade.

amps is a different story, i don't think i'll ever stop dreaming about a hughes and kettner triamp.

I'm 19, and since I haven't moved out yet I have the luxury of not having to let bills get in the way of my guitar stuff.

I'm happy with the guitar I have right now.. Schecter Avenger A-5x, 5-string baritone, very one of a kind guitar. I haven't decided if I'm gonna upgrade or keep this one, but if I end up keeping this one I'm gonna pour some more money into it to get the pickups, tuners, and strap buttons upgraded.

Dream guitar.. I doubt I'd spend more than $1200 on a guitar, ever, I'm not that great of a player and I know you can get good tone for less than a grand.. just ask Greyskull. I would love to own a custom ESP Eclipse, or a vintage Gibson Explorer someday, but not until I know I'm going to put it to good use performing.

I'm 19 and the two guitars I have now cost about a combined $1000 once the mods and stuff are included. They are the guitars in my sig. My rig not including guitars cost me about $1500 bucks.

Twenty-three but closer to twenty-four. I feel like an old lady among all you teenagers. Now, Ryan, though, you're ancient, hun. LOL. :p

I spent $1200 on my Gibson Les Paul Standard. Being this year's model and new for the guy I bought it from, it was slightly used but in great condition. He sold me an amp, too, which is, of course, a ****ty Marshall solid state, but the price was good enough to compel me to take it: $150. Since then I've had to spend $90 to repair a ****ed transistor, but I think that was my fault (or Marshall's fault) rather than the seller since he says he never played it anywhere near full volume while I blast it like crazy (my boss often lets me play in the bar I work at when we're closed, and the walls around here are heavily soundproofed), and I'm pretty sure the resistor either burned itself out or got shaken loose. Shop fixed it, it broke again soon after, then they REfixed it for free, and I haven't had any problems for three or four weeks now.

Additionally, I've spent $180 on a tube distortion emulator pedal (Tech 21 SA GT2), which I bought new, and just today I bought a used Crybaby from a guy I met at work for $30. So far I've bought about $25 worth of strings, $30 worth of cables, $5 for a metal slide, $15 for a nylon strap, and $2 for a pair of Dunlop strap locks because I got tired of my heavy-ass guitar slipping out of its straps since I like to jump around like a crazy woman when I play. And a couple bucks for a dozen .73 mm Dunlop nylon picks, of which I've so far torn up three (so I'm on my fourth one).

So that's, what, somewhere between $1700 and $1800 total?

I'm 17 and since I started plaing 5 years ago i've spent:

$120 - Squire Strat
$350 - Epiphone SG Goth
$550 - Epiphone Les Paul Classic Plus
$300 - Epiphone Hummingbird Acoustic
$650 - Marshall JCM 800 2205 head
$350 - Peavey Cabinet
$50 - Pedal board
$100 - Digitech xp-100 Whammy Wah
$75 - Boss DD-2 Delay
$110 - Ibanez DFL Flanger

I plan on spending as much as $3000 on a Gibson Silverburst Les Paul once I get a job when I get my car.

I'm 19.

Fender Fat Strat = $680 CDN
Ibanez SR400 = $700 CDN

Ampeg SVT AV w/ 410 HLF = $3100 CDN

Within the next year or so I intend to spend $2000 CDN on a new bass (Ernie Ball Fretless Sterling), and probably between $1000 and $2000 on effects. A Warwick Thumb is on my list too but that's a ways further down the road.

Oh, and if strings and what not are being counted, it costs me $60 everytime I restring my bass.

Besides tuition and whatnot I don't have an awful lot of extra expenses right now so when I have money it usually goes towards my gear. I know what I want and I don't compromise on it.

yes, you could.

I've been playing for 14 years. It adds up after a while....and doesn't even seem all that much when you start making a good paycheck and living on your own.....(I spend $3000 on rent a year, plus food and internet.......It starts seeming like less and less all the time).

Wow! Step aside, Marcus Licinius Crassus!

You live on $250 a month, INCLUDING rent? I'm not sure which I admire more, your frugality or the degree of aceticism inherent to being that frugal! Again, WOW.

****.....forgot to add a bit.

No, I live on about $400/month for LIVING expense(this does not include smoking, as I can live without it). My rent is CHEAP. Like $250(I live with 2 roommates)for a LARGE downtown 3 bedroom apartment with a backyard that isn't a ghetto. It's all inclusive. So I pay my portion of phone and internet(No cable TV, we don't see a need for it) which is about $50, and $100 on food.

Rent in Canada is cheap in alot of cities.....and if you look hard enough, you can get it inclusive as well(this does not apply to toronto and vancouver). Food is the same price here, so in the long run, alot cheaper(we have a higher minimum wage as well).

Pc tech. I was on a LAN team for a canadian ISP for a year....before that I did technical support. I got laid off. Now I am collecting EI untill I start school in january.

I have no debts, no credit cards, I don't drive(I can't drive, and public transport kicks ass in this town). I live a pretty quiet life.

When I was working I started that job at $12 a hour, ended at $18.50 a hour. 40 hour weeks. So I made good money because of my lifestyle choices. I love my apartment and my area(chinatown), so no point in moving. I don't really go out(except to shows). I don't really spend alot on objects other then computer bits and books. I download almost all the music and movies I intake. So yeah, I live very cheaply.

I'm 31. My Fender cost about $1000. I can't see spending much more than that on a guitar in terms of sound/playability, although definitely for looks ( Driskill Guitars (http://www.driskillguitars.com) , anyone?) The Mark III and its cabs were like $600 back in '89 or so, and the BC was $550 - I remember the day I got it like it was yesterday.

I'm a doctor, so I guess I have more money than sense, but I just love to play; it's not so much about the rig for me as it used to be.

By the way, whoever put this in their signature:

that would be cool if aliens played guitar

needs to go check out Steve Vai live. The thing that calls itself Steve is not of this earth, man.

I'm 25, and I'm in the army.

I've been wanting to upgrade my kit for awhile, but women usually foiled my plot. Now my plan is to do everything in a big rush before they take all my money again. I've tried to plan everything out for maximum effect. Once I do buy everything, it'll probably be another ten years before I change anything.

Everything I own is used, exept for the TS-9 and the Effector 13 stuff.

My rig for the last 10 years or so;

89 Fender Strat (American Made) - free
-Volume (some Croatian thing) -$20
-Original Dunlop Cry Baby -Lunch at McDonalds
-Ibanez DS-7 Distotion -$75
-Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamer -$150
-Peavey 75w amp for a bass guitar or something -$200

Total $445 + Big Mac Combo

Things I've bought recently
-Furman PQ-3 - $100USD
-Truly Beautiful Disaster
-Sacred Fuzz
-Low-Fi -$350 for all three

Total $5 more than all the stuff I've used for the last 10 years.

Major purchases left

Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier & 4x12
G-Force
Rocktron All Access midi foot controller
Digitech Whammy 4
Boss GE-7 x2
A/B-Y box
THD Hotplate

Total - Too much

notice, i said i've only been living alone for 2 years. i've had nary a pot to piss in this whole time. but i did buy my eclipse for 4 grand. [that nearly took two years.]

guitar playing has been 6 years. thats roughly four years of acquiring gear while not having to pay rent.

so, 3000 dollars isnt really much spread over 6 years time...

anyway to answer your question. i apply vinyl adhesive film to substrate material for use in the sign field.

in other words, i break my back to apply stickers to very large peices of plastic and metal.. do you have a best buy, wachovia bank, or white castle burger joint in your area? i'm responsible for the signs....

prior to that, i've worked as a mental health technician [great pay!] various retail jobs, grocery store stocker/cashier, billboard fabrication, restaurant. all your average highschool **** jobs...

i'm not quite as gear-mad as you crazy people, but I have spent more than i really should have.

Things that are currently on my board that i'm cool with at the prices I paid:

Fender Std. Tele-$360
Crate MX15R-$80

Boss DD-3-$80, including adapator
EHX NYC Small Sone-$75
Boss TR-2-$50
BOSS HM-2-$25

Things I'm NOT cool with:

Boss DS-1-$64

This doesn't, of course, include all the other things I've owned and sold:

MXR Blue Box
EHX Dr. Q (I finally found a poor sap to sell it to, Ryan)
Boss SD-1 (This I kinda regret, just cause I like dirt boxes, but i dunno...too late, now...might buy a replacement one day)
Boss TR-2 (1ST ONE)

I'm 20 and I'm a student. I'm not going to tell you everything on my gear, but here's the major purchases:

- gibson les paul custom: 1.960€ used. 1.000€ were the pay for 3 mounth in a ****ty bar, treated like a slave and paid even less, plus some "music money" (my major income now: the money I take everytime I perform).

- marshall SLP: 1.500€ new. my grandaddy gave me a 2.000€ cheque when half of my gear was stolen!!! without him, I think I would have stop playing guitar "seriously". keep in mind he was in the fascist army during the WWII: he's always criticized my long hair, he used to beat my mom when she was listening to the beatles in '68 etc etc etc. until I played him something with my classical guitar: he discovered what a C major scale it's the same on an electric guitar than on other instruments... I just palyed him some "poor man" imitation of al di meola on a silly Am/G/F7M/E7 progression!!!

now I'm working on a new strat (the former was stolen): I have 500+€ out of music money.

the rest of the money come from my family, based on how many exams I can give. if I don't study, I don't have money to survive: that's all, folks!

And the black market beer and liquor you pay top-dollar for at 15

And furthermore what makes my rig worth it...

+$1400 - getting into a car accident and and getting a nice juicy settlement

+$2000 - Getting your old gear ripped off by a no tallent leadsinger...and being smart enought at 16 to have your gear insured

PRICELESS - Seeing that guys new - off key/fluctuating tempo slipknot-core band become the mockery of Milwaukee (while still using parts of my gear) and looking down at him from 10 feet up...as he is standing behind 2000 other people when we opened for Rollins Band...and hearing he's still playing teencenters after 2 years while i'm on tour, playing in Ohio.

you will all be tucked up in bed now with your teddy bears, so it's safe...
I'm 41 and obviously might as well be 411 (I've got a 15 year old son who plays drums)
interesting that gear in the US seems generally to be cheaper than here in old blighty, that old $ for £ conversion , what a rip off - also I'm a lefty so I get to pay more just for existing....

my 81 Les Paul de-luxe cost me £1000 15 years go (s/h) though I paid by installments cos I was so poor
US Standard Tele £750, new
my Royal DC Junior (custom built in 1980 by one of the UK's best luthiers) cost me £150 second hand (the guy in the shop didn't know what he had), and it is the best guitar I own by a zillion miles
My Matamp set me back about £1200 and I suppose I've spent about another £1000 on stomp boxes etc over the years - I guess the good thing about quality gear is that it lasts - a good guitar will last you a lifetime!

Seems to me that most people on this webpage have crap equipment and brag about what they'll have in the future based on name dropping alone. Why not listen to a guitar rather than just assuming it's good because it's endorsed by soandso. P.S. Peavey XXX totally sucks and is a poor mans Triple Rec - wake up! Also Ibanez do have poor build quality compared to the much superior Jackson, where as PRS has great build quality but it's reputation is being slandered by idiots who think because awful bands like Nickleback and Creed pay them, then they must suck, forgetting that Carlos Santana played them for years and look where Mesa would be without him!

alright, someone else over 40!! I'll be 41 next month.

I played quite a bit in a few bands from the time I was 16 until about 21. At that point I pretty much got out and focused on school and life. In '90 I traded my remaining electric gear for an acoustic.

About 3 years ago I hit my midlife crisis and wanted to get back into music, just doing some home recording. So, in the last 2.5 years I've done this w/gear:

'98 Kramer Baretta via ebay - $180
Johnson J-station - $150
'99 Dean Edge I bass - $180
M-Audio Omni Studio - $350
Marshall MXL-V67 large diaphram mic - $100
acidmusic 3.0 - Free w/coupon

I used the above to make my entire cd. Then...

Carvin DC150 custom - $950
Carvin Bolt-T kit via ebay - $305
Tech 21 Sansamp PSA 1 - $140
Carvin 'In Stock' B4 bass w/acitve electronics - $447
Laney VC30-210 amp - $350
SOLD the Baretta and the Dean bass for a total of over $400
ART ECC multi fx pedal - $83
assorted stands, cables, tuners, gig bags, etc. - $350

This is a hobby for me, so all my stuff has to come from 'found' money, after mortgage, bills, food, etc.. I'm very performance/value oriented when it comes to these purchases; that's why I research A LOT. I got all 3 of my Carvins for under $2000 and each plays like a $2000 instrument, easily. Once my cd was done, I had about 40 copies made and sold over 20 at $10 each, so that was another $200 back into the gear fund. The rest I sent off as demos, gave as gifts, put away for the kids, etc.. Of course it cost me about $200 to get the 40 cd's made, so... :D But, it was my objective when I started back into music and I did it. I'm going to be starting my 2nd cd, well, I've already done one song, but I'm trying to established a more defined and focused 'sound' for me, both musically and vocally. It's fun!!:)

I think you spend what you can - now I'm old and grey and full of sleep I've got some money - when I was on fire with youth I had none. In 1977 all you needed was a barre chord, a safety pin and some attitude, nobody cared about gear, we were too angry or too pissed (that's drunk, my yankee chums) ah... happy days!:)

Gear is extremely expensive in Norway... a new WH-4 costs 570$

I'm 33 and I've been making my own Strats for a while now.

I try to keep the cost of the parts to the equivalent of the retail price of a Fender American Standard ($1,350USD).

Because of the Custom job they are obviously worth a lot more but unless I cut the cost I wouldn't be able to sell any. Besides, I can never part with one once it's finished.

I must have bought about $2,000USD worth of Pickups alone in the past 12 months.

I'm 24. Here's my deal (everything I own/in my house, in order of receiving, and all prices USD):

Guitars:

Fender Squier Stratocaster: Birthday or Christmas present I later sold for $101.01
Crestline Les Paul copy: Birthday or Christmas present
Fender Squier Fat Strat: High School Graduation present
Fender Squier Affinity Bullet Special: $136

Could also purchase from my father his ESP EC300-AT for $300. If I don't buy it, he's gonna try to get $600 for it.

Effects:

Korg DT-3 (tuner): Birthday or Christmas present
DOD FX7 (multi-effects unit): Birthday or Christmas present
DOD Grunge (69B): $40
Boss SD-1: $56
Boss CE-1: 24th birthday present

Amps:

Peavey Studio Pro: Birthday or Christmas Present
Fender Princeton Stereo Chorus: Birthday or Christmas Present
Marshall JCM800 2203 MKII ("The Zebra"): $626.99

So I have spent $858.99 on gear. Add the money I gained from selling my first guitar, I have really only spent $757.98. Everything listed as a present came from my father who nurtured my guitar playing--even though he really couldn't afford it.

I would like to purchase a 2x12 and a 4x12 for my amp so I don't have to constantly borrow 4x12's, and if I play in a band again I would have the versatility of using a 2x12 if a 4x12 would be too much.

I would also like to purchase a wah pedal for tone shaping reasons. In my mind, they're not just for solos.

Yeah... I had a famous economics prof in university (U of Waterloo) who did a study on disposable income on in the US vs. Canada. Shockingly, if you make under 75K a year you actually have more disposable income in Canada. Past the 75K mark, the US starts winning quickly. I was impressed by that number but I still moved to the US for career considerations (plus Austin just plain rocks and I don't have to put up with those pesky winters). What city are you in Canada? I grew up in London, ON, school in Waterloo and spent a lot of time in Ottawa (which is my fave cdn city to this day).

i'm 24 and spend a lot...
i'm not going to go through my rig list, but i spend a lot on other things besides guitars. I like organs, cymbals, drums, microphones and odd antique furnitures.
I think everyone here knows what i have, or can figure it out.

I think every guitarist should spend some time learning to play the drums though... i'm a much better guitarist because of it...

I'm 29, as of 3 days ago.

So far I've spent:

$500 on my old Ibanez RG
$850 on my current Strat
$800 on my current Takamine Acoustic
$275 on my current Seagull Acoustic
$100 on my current Jackson 5 string bass (awesome deal)

I would probably spend up to $2000 on a new electric and up to $4000 on a new acoustic. I've really wanted a nice Taylor acoustic for a long time, so I may breakdown one day and get it.

I'm 33. I would spend up to $3000.00 for my dream guitar if I had it. I have spent up to $1000.00 on my Yamaha. ($200 for guitar, $400 to replace bridge and $400 to replace pickups) I want a $3000.00 amp...

But realistically, I can spend in the epiphones or mex fenders, highway 1 area. That's fine with me. I like to add custom stuff to my guitars anyway such as after market pickups and such.

I'm 31 and i probably own about 4000 euros (3000 dollars ???) worth of stuff.
I've been playing for over 20 years but only got really interested in gear a couple of years ago (even though i've been doing 40 odd gigs a year for the last 8 years) but i must have spent thousands over the years. I buy nearly everything second hand (though all my guitars were bought new). I couldn't imagine myself spending 1000 dollars on a guitar ... i don't like the idea of something so expensive getting the touring and gigging treatment ...

How the hell do you younger guys spend so much money on stuff ?
When i was young once you'd bought cigs, drink, a few records and drugs there was nothing left !

These days it's rent, car insurance, petrol, bills, cigs and drink, which generally leaves about 100 to 200 euros for gear ... (thank god i don't have any kids !) ...

Danelectro Innuendo: $130 a piece plus $25 for setup for slide (I have 3 of them for different tunings)
Ibanez Talman: $100, my first guitar
Fender Hot Rod Deville 410: $500 used
Peavey Classic 30: $250 used
Silvertone Twin Twelve: $150 (I think)
Ultrasound DS-50 Acoustic amp: $225 used

Boss metalzone $80 When I got the 5150 I gave this to a pal.
Boss Super Chorus $60 I realized one day that I HATE chorus.
Danelectro Daddy-o $60 It sounded like crap through the Twin
DOD Flanger $50 I realized the sound of a jet plane isn't for me
Peavey Pacer $125 Actually sounded better than the Crate
Danelectro Tuner $50 The light burned out after a month
Juno 60 synth $350 sold to a good friend
I might be leaving stuff out

Here's what I have now including all music gear,
Fender Cyclone II $550
70s Gibson Les Paul Deluxe $600(had it since I was 8)
Danelectro 6 string bass $200

Vox Nova amp(passed down from Dad)
Line 6 POD 2.0 $300
Boss DS1 Distortion Pedal $30
Korg Microkorg synth $369
Line 6 Delay Modeler $249
Roland 1880 DAW $1400 I wish I could sell it but it's malfunctioning
random mic pres $600
mics $400?
As you can see, the only thing that has cost a large chunk of change is the one that has caused me the most problems.
I try not to spend more than about $350 on things most of the time.

hmm I'm 17 and what all my stuff is worth is FAR greater than way i spent on it... my uncle GAVE (out of the blue) me an 81 marshall jcm 8000 2204, i found an ORIGINAL 65 Fender Twin reverb at a non-music related pawn shop for 350$, a really really old marshall 4x10 that lost its brand logo i aquired at a buddy rogers for 300$ (they didnt know what it was), 3 of my guitars were gifts from past christmases, and a lot of my pedals were gifts too. i just spent about 300$ on upgrading my pedals and getting new ones, and aside from that i bought a RI jazz master myself for $500, and i also have a lot of rack stuff so.... i dunno, if you were to calculate the retail price of a lot of my stuff itd be through the roof. now that i think ive spent a lot more than ive realized but i guess just about all my money from on-and-off jobs ive been working for the past 2 years have gone towards music related stuff... i also payed for most of my PA but this forum is about guitar related equiptment

Anyway, I'm not going to go into every bit of equipment I have but recently:

Schecter C-1 Elite: $700 new
Rivera Knucklehead Reverb (100W): $2000 new

I make about $1400 a month, no rent as I've just moved back home because of some nasty debt accumulated during college. I budget only about $200 - $250 bucks a month right now so I can get it all paid off as quickly as possible. So far, I've got about $5000 left to pay off which ain't too bad! :D

So if we don't have a Triple Rec, we're inferior? Peavey XXX compared to Triple Rec is a taste issue, not a money issue. It's not fair to anyone here to judge them on something like that.
Also Ibanez do have poor build quality compared to the much superior Jackson
Depends on the type of Ibanez you use. Some people love them, some people hate them. The same goes for Jackson. It all depends on what you get.

I presume he meant "thank God" as the idiom, not a literal profession of his faith.

Im 17 (as of a couple of weeks ago). My electric was around 500, my acoustic 200, my pedals around 600 (so far :) ), and my amp 180 (be nice.. you have to start somewhere). Im now saving, about 30 dollars a week  (damn mimimum wage job, gas, and insurance) for an amp that will fall around 1500 bucks, then on to completing my pedal board.

A couple of my pedals were gifts and my parents helped me (as a birthday present last year) on my electric. I did the rest by working crappy jobs.

Id spend about 2000 on my dream guitar probably, maybe more if it was really going to kick ass. If I had the money, of course.

Not too shabby when you consider that the Hiwatt is worth about $1,000 of that should I ever sell it. Now if we added up every bit of gear that I've had and gotten rid of over the years...well, let's just say I could take a hefty bite out of my mortgage.

I spent about $500 on a Jap Fender Tele 62 Custom reissue in '97. That was with cash I got from selling a LP. I don't think I'd spend more than $300 on a guitar now, though.

Part of it is because I've got a wife, daughter, and house to take care of, but I've also played too many inexpensive guitars that are great or could be great with a few mods. Hell, you could probably build a great one from Warmoth and Mighty Mite parts for a few hundred.

Actually, I should do that: Sell my Custom and use the diff. to buy a new amp ...

Or a new dishwashing machine :-)

20 at college and home on the breaks.

Gibson SG-X for $300
Epi LP Standard for $350
Fender Super 112 (all tube)--$300

Yamaha acoustic for a birthday gift, my first one.

no pedals, no sold gear.

So less that 1,000 not including strings. I think I'd spend up to $1500 for an orange amp but my guitar spending would definetly cap at $1000. If you can get a 60's jaguar for that much, why would you spend more?

Im 16 years old and have been playing guitar seriously since i was 13. I had a job last summer when i was 15 and made about $1600 where i got my les paul, and a new amp. Im in high school now and dont have a job. I just got a car and have to pay for gas so im running out of money fast. I spend almost all of my money on guitar related stuff and cds. Probably 70% of money on my G.A.S., 15% on gas. and 15% on cds/dvds/other.

Ive probably spent $2500 worth of guitar gear, including stuff ive sold.

I would probably spent about 3,000 to get my dream guitar if i had the extra money and it wouldnt leave me broke.

I'm 18
I wrote this post once but I mistakenly deleted it.(first post was better!!! argh)

I recieved my first guitar at age 12. A purple mex strat $270

I purchased my first real amp when I was 14. Fender Hot Rod Deluxe $550
I love it and still use it today.

For highschool graduation I had a sum of money burning a hole in my pocket so I decided to goto a sale they were having at sam ash.

I originally wanted to get a LP but I couldn't afford it. The more I play the happier I become with my decision.

I picked up a 50th aniversary stratocaster on sale from $1100. With tax I belive it was $1080.

Anyone who has held one of these guitars knows what I'm talking about. I LOVE this guitar. The aged pickguard/ knobs/pick-up covers look awesome. The s-1 switch gives me great versatility. The tuning keys are very pratical for someone like me who after 6 years will stilll screw up changing their strings! I couldn't be happier with this axe.

My first and only acoustic was a Epiphone aj-200 I got for my bday from my girl friend. Its really rugged and resistant to scratches and dings. Great acoustic to take arround with you.

For x-mas off of ebay I picked up 2 pedals. Analogman Boss SD-1 Silver with ibanez clipping and a Analogman Ibanez Tubescreamer Silver. These should make a killer combination. The SD-1 was $117 and the TS-9 was $180
both include shipping.

I picked up a MXR phase 90 about a month ago. I plan on adding the following pedals as the years go by:
Analogman Bicompressor, boss TU-2, cry baby, Ernie Ball Volume pedal, and a Maxon analog delay...

We'll see what happens as the time goes by.

20 years old here. I have been playing for seven years now and gone through quite a bit of gear. I started out plugging a Peavy Raptor (Strat copy) into my dad's stereo, then bought a little Peavy practice amp for $70 (still have!), and then a Marshall valvestate combo for $400. Then I got another Marshall combo with 2x12 for $500 off eBay and an Ibanez AX120 for $400. Then I started buying different effects pedals. I have owned almost all of Line 6's stompboxes and now own none. That DL4 is a great pedal though.
This past summer I sold a PODT XT and FBV shortboard for a Crate VFX 5212 $560 , which I then sold to get some of my current gear which is as follows:

Epiphone Les Paul Standard $700 (including pickup mods to 500T and 57 Classic plus)
Ernie Ball Volume pedal $65
Custom Vox wah $110
MXR dynacomp $60
Robert Keeley BD-2 $100
Robert Keeley MT-2 $150
TC Electronic G-Major $380
Rocktron Midi Mate $125
BBE 482i Sonic Maximizer $170
and my favorite: Rivera Knucklehead Reverb 55 $1075 with ATA flight case

Stuff sold:
Roland GR-33 guitar synth $500
Line 6 DL4 $200
Line 6 MM4 $175
Line 6 FM4 $165
Marshall Bichorus Combo $500
ESP LTD-MH300 $500
Ibanez AX120 $400
POD XT and FBV $600
Mesa Boogie 20:20 $500
Seymour Duncan pickup boost $60
Boss PH-3 $90

My wife says I have spent way too much, I say I am looking for what I like. Well I finally found the amp I like and some pedals I like, but I have quite a number of things left on my wish list!

I just want to rebutt the person a bunch of posts back that knocked the Peavey Triple X and says that the Rectifier is the best amp....I own a Triple X right now among other amps. I traded my rectifier a long time ago; way too cliche these days and I find them to be too muddy anyway. IMO. I have owned tons of amps!! Fender, Peavey, lot's of Marshalls (still love a good 80's JCM800 or anything older), Bogner, Mesa etc etc and now Atomic Amps. check out my gear pics.

There's tons of good gear out there....for the rectifier freaks who think Mesa is the S&*T try plugging into a Bogner or even better a Diezel!! You are right, unfortunately, all the crap pop punk bands have spoiled the "PRS plugged into a Mesa" thing. PRS make a fine instrument, that is undeniable, but there are tons of other amazing guitars out there so why settle for the same guitar all the cliche guys are playing.

I do have to agree that the build quality of Ibanez(and most cheaper) guitars is less than glorious. Most people will begin to gravitate away from Ibanez and into more quality instruments as they gain more experience and more money!! That being said, as great as Fender and Gibson are there is a bigger world out there as well. I stopped using Gibson for anything other than the studio...even with a good tech on the road Les Pauls just struggle to stay in tune for more than a song or two. I only have one Les Paul now but have had many and my biggest reason for avoiding them these days is that the price is over inflated. They just aren't worth the 4-5,000 dollar mark that they seem to hit in most places. The biggest reason for guitar choice in the Fender, gibson, gretsch, Tom Anderson market is tone...what does the song call for? Sometimes you just need the spank of a Strat or the unique fat tone of a Les Paul. No Ibanez can provide that.

Price isn't everything but let's face it a ford focus just won't keep pace with a Ferrari. When you spend more on a guitar you get better woods, electronics and most of all craftmanship. The difference between a $400 and a $4000 guitar is immediately obvious. That being said, unless you are making your living from it or just have the money/guitar addiction you don't have to spend a million bucks to enjoy playing and have fun.

Anyway, I am 34 and my gear is as follows...

Epiphone Del Rey was won from a raffle at a music store. Best thing that has happened to me that involved me getting something. They went for 450 new and go for about 200 used on eBay.

Samick spg650-ff around 550.

Mesa Triple Rec - 1250 used, less the foot switch.

Peavey MS412 - 250 used

The most I'd spend... depends on how much it'd cost me to get a custom BC Rich Mockingbird. So about 2500; that is if I had the money. I'd probably spend more on amps as they do a whole lot more for my sound than a guitar, and I LOVE my cheap ass Epiphone. It's the guitar I learned on and nothing beats it for me.

As I look at guitars currently made I like most of the ones in the 600 - 1000 range. I don't think at this point in time I could justify any more for a guitar. First I don't have a need for one, and my playing isn't good enough to really do a more expensive guitar justice.

I think I like finding deals more than most people, and I think some of my purchases reflect that.

I paid 500 for my Japanese Jaguar. 1100 for my Taylor. 140 for my Jag Stang. 175 for my Tom Delonge Strat. I have a Squier Bullet that I inherited from a previous relationship. My main bass is a custom job P/J style. Cost about 400. I have a Peavey Patriot I got 12 years ago for 100 bucks. (Oh yeah, I'm 28).

I have a nylon string guitar I got for 5 bucks, and my first guitar ever which was an Aria steel string acoustic which was 100 bucks brand new in 1990.

Pedals I've almost all traded for. I got my Fab Tone for 12 dollars. I got a free green big muff. My girfriend gave me my dl-4, I got my tu-2 for 40. My True Grit for 70. My amp is a HD-130 2x12 which I got for 400. And I have a champ that I got for 15 and got working for 40.

I've spent loads over the years,

I'm super happy with my Jagstang at the moment, I'd spend about £1500 on a nice Tele.

Ibanez are okay, but they look a bit whack to be honest.

I'll be 32 next month (but people who don't know me think I'm 25). I am a gear whore and I admit it. I've gotten so much gear over the past 2 years that I can't remember how much I've spent. Just suffice it to say that I could have easily bought a car with the money. Here are a list of items that I've purchased in the past 2 years alone. Items that I have since sold have been marked as such.

* = item has been sold

Amps:
- Mesa Boogie Recto-verb head*
- Mesa Boogie 2x12 rectifier cab
- Marshall JCM 800 2205*
- Fender Bassman 50*
- Roland JC-120*
- Fender Blues Deluxe

- Marshall JCM 2000 DSL-50*
- Orange AD30R 2x12 combo*
- Orange AD-140TC head*
- Fender '65 Reissue Twin Reverb
- Bogner Shiva (up on ebay as I type this)
- Marshall Silver Jubilee 2550*
- Framus Cobra*
- Dr. Z Prescription 2x12 combo
- Ampeg V4 head x 2 (got one as a backup cuz it was so cheap)
- Rivera 4x12 cab
- Carvin 2x12 vertical cab
- Fender 4x12 cab*

Guitars:
- Gibson Les Paul Classic
- Fender Jaguar custom (with humbuckers)*
- Fender Toronado
- Gibson L6*
- Fender Jazzmaster
- DeArmond Starfire
- Fender Telecaster American
- Fender Mustang
- Gibson RD Standard*

Pedals:
- Line 6 DL4
- Line 6 MM4*
- Ibanez AD9*
- Hughes and Kettner Tube Factor
- Tonebone Hot British
- Crowther Hotcake
- Dano Daddy-o
- Dano Fabtone
- EHX Big Muff
- EHX Smallstone
- EHX Holy Grail
- Zoom Ultra Fuzz
- Digitech Digi-delay
- Jeckyl & Hyde Overdrive
- Fulltone Fulldrive II
- Keeley modded Boss Blues Driver
- Keeley Compressor*
- Tonebone switchbone*
- MXR Phase 100
- MXR Distortion+
- MXR Microamp
- Maxon AD900
- Marshall Drivemaster
- Nady TD-1 Tube distortion
- Boss PS-3

I'm sure I've bought more pedals but I just can't remember them all right now. I am really working towards selling off a lot of my gear and consolidating pieces to just what I need. I think that I will ultimately just keep my Dr. Z and one of the Ampeg V4s. I think that with those 2 amps I can handle most sounds that I would ever want with the right pedals.

I've owned a few other guitars and amps such as a Marshall JCM 900, a Fender Prosonic combo, a Peavey Bandit (my first amp), a Peavey Butcher, a Marshall Valvestate head, and a Gibson Les Paul Studio but these fall outside of the 2 year range.

i'm 32 and seriously relieved that there are older folk on this forum!! i only started playing about 5 years ago, and don't spend huge amounts on gear. in the last year i have bought -

gibson sg - £150
marshall 1959 head £200
2x12 cab w'vintage 30's £70

and a bunch of pedals, many of which were traded, including mongoose fuzz, boss dd3, fuzz factory, small stone, double muff etc etc..

i would spend a fortune if i had it, but am so happy with my guitar and amp that i'm in no hurry to change anything. too much GAS is a very, very bad thing!

im 17 from uk

total gear spend-egde is, well let me work it out for ya

mex strat (my first, still got that sumwhere lol)£250ish
carslbro 30w combo £200 ish

these were gifts for when i started out so cant say i spen money on that.

i bought a second hand rg (dont know what model) from USA for $350 and this had had loads done to it and have been giging with it for nearly 5 years. i love this guitar is my pride and joy. had replace ment pickups etc, got a cracked neck and theres noway im even gonna attempt to get a new neck from ibanez.

then i saved for donkeys years for a rg550ex which to be honest doesnt play as well as my rg for $350 and cost me £600. so bit of a dissapointment.
then i got a jcm800 2210 and jcm800 2x12 for £350 which was probably one of my best guitar gear buys.
and since then ive had no money to splash out on fancy guitars. jus got a couple of guitars with like odd bits and bobs that ive put together, which probably cost about £200 in total and sound kinda fucnky and unique ya kno.

if i had £2000 spare would i spend it on a nice gibson? probably not. i mean dont get me wrong there nice but there everywhere and every1 plays one of some description. so my RG isnt that nice to look at but it plays sweet and cost sweet nothin.

ok im done.

I'm 26

Guitars I own and what I paid for them:

-1978 Fender Telecaster = ± $1100
(paid 2100 german marks back in the day...)
-Epiphone Sheraton II = $850
(after installing Dimarzio PAF pro's and Graphtech/Gibson hardware))
-1989 Casio MG-500 Midi Guitar = $350
-1989 Casio MG-500 Midi Guitar = $350
(bought two of them ;) )
-1965 Eko Cobra = $100
(recently refretted and gave it to my girlfriend)

My amps/pedals/rackstuff is easily $5000/6000 combined, don't want to specify really...
(and since you only asked about guitars)

Going to buy an Ibanez axs32tkf next week
wich sets me back only 300 euro's but it plays/responds amazingly! probably will replace the pick-ups and tuners though...

Marshall JCM900 full stack - about £800 in total.
JMP-1 pre amp - £250
various effects power suplys etc - about £500
cables - who knows....

so err yeah, i think that does it....

1983 BC Rich Bich, white: $150

1976 Gibson L6 Deluxe: Got it on trade for the hardtail strat.

Amps I used to own, and how much I spent on them:

1995 Sovtek Mig 100 head: $325
1979 Marshall JMP combo: $425
19?? Silvertone custom 15: $7.00

Effects I used to own: Too numerous to mention...

If you are looking for advice about buying guitars, spend as much as you want on one. However, find out the book price, and try to spend a bit less than that. For the most part, guitars are overpriced. Would you believe that an old guitar teacher I know used to pick up Teles in NYC for $50 in the 70's?

I'm 30, and am an assistant professor at a college.

2004 Parker Fly Mojo - $2000 (used, off eBay)
2004 Parker Nitefly-M - $1250 (new)
Line 6 Vetta II Combo - $1500 (slightly used)
Line 6 Vetta II Cabinet - Free (promo item w/ combo)
Line 6 FBV Foot Controller - Free (promo item w/ combo)

The way I justify the Parkers is my back. After an old sports injury, it was either buy REALLY light guitars, use one of the werdo straps (which personally I can't stand), or stick to sitting playing acoustic. I bought a couple guitars to try out, ended up selling them all to buy the Parker, and I couldn't be happier! :D And, I will be the first person to admit that my entire family got in together to buy me the Nitefly for my birthday, and they got it for me just after I had ordered the Mojo for myself. The Vetta was just the best option for me, since I like to mess around with a lot of sounds, and gave me an entire rig for a similar cost in a much more easy-to-transport package.

I used Ibanez for years before I got my Strat in 1988 and I tried one of the new ones just the other day. Now working out how to finance the purchase. I lost interest in them in the 80s 'cos you couldn't get one without a Floyd-type bridge and I just can't play them, but they're coming out with some very nice hardtails now at a VERY sweet price: about UK£350, whatever that is in your local currency. Generally I wouldn't spend a great deal on a guitar unless it was hand-built to my personal spec., but that isn't going to happen for a very long time (if someone my age can survive for a very long time, that is!). I'd probably not spend more than UK£400 for an off-the-shelf instrument.

My gear and what it cost:
1986 Jap Fender Strat =about UK£250
70s Music Man RD112 50 = about UK£80
Boss Super OD = UK£30
Boss CS2 Compressor = UK£20
Boss Turbo Distortion = UK£3 (yes, 3!)
Boss PS2 Pitch/Delay = UK£60
Boss Super Stereo Chorus = UK£45
Ibanez VL10 Volume Pedal = UK£25
Seymour Duncan Hot Rails = UK£25
DiMarzio HS2 = UK£5

Total: about UK£530
and sounds amazing.

In my life I worked out I have spent around five or six grand on equipment. My current rig is worth between one and a half and two grand, UKP (£).

If I'd have spent wisely I'd have two or three kickass vintage guitars, another marshall 100w head and loads of other stuff I still really want, as opposed to numerous smashed/otherwise destroyed cheap guitars and an empty wallet.

I'm 18, and how much I spend depends on whether I have a job or not, when I have the cash I will spend what it takes to get a sound I want(or want to try). I think about $2000 would be my limit for a guitar if I had the cash, but I would be so paranoid with it though. I have kind of raised my price since learning that a $500 epiphone is not even close a $1700 gibson(although there are some nice epi's out there). But on everything that I have and have bought, I think only you geeks would get it, most people just say: "why didn't you buy car?"

What I've spent on guitar gear:
Ibanez RG320FA $750AUS new, Tone Zone plus installation $150, however once I'm done with this guitar I'm seeing about $1500 worth of changes going into it. Oh and a case for $150.
Ibanez GR320RRF $425AUS new, less than half price! Best buy ever!
Big Muff $180AUS second hand.
MT-2+$100 traded for a OD-20.
Custom Loop Box $50, hand made.
Patch leads $40, hand made.
MG50, worst thing I've ever bought, $620AUS new.
GE-7 Japanese $60AUS, not sure how many owners it has had but its pretty beaten.
This is just for my current rig.

I hate to think what I've spent on gear over the last 30-odd years. If I do think about it, I tend to think about the bargains I got, like a 1950s Tele in Teal Green for UK£115 or a 60s Gibson 175 for UK£30.....but there weren't very many of those.

So far I've spent:

$500 on my old Ibanez RG
$850 on my current Strat
$800 on my current Takamine Acoustic
$275 on my current Seagull Acoustic
$100 on my current Jackson 5 string bass (awesome deal)

I would probably spend up to $2000 on a new electric and up to $4000 on a new acoustic. I've really wanted a nice Taylor acoustic for a long time, so I may breakdown one day and get it.

Update:

I turned 30 a month ago.

I'm 21. Crap I've owned (if it's got a star, it's no longer with me):

Guitars:
*Fender Strat (Mexican...my first electric...awwww)
*Gibson Les Paul special SL (pretty jankity guitar, but it said gibson on it)
Gibson Les Paul goldtop (my #1 for about 5 years now...never going anywhere)
*Gibson Les Paul Deluxe (a gift from the pops...liked it but didn't love it)
*Gibson Les Paul Custom (white) (broke the headstock and my heart...sold it for more than it was worth)
Fender American Tele (my indisputed #2...never going to sell it)
*Gibson Les Paul standard (ebay...it turned out to be crappy..needed work...guitar center gave me a really good trade-in)
Gibson Les Paul DC Junior (new, but permanent member of my rig)

Amps:
*Fender Frontman 15 (my first amp....once again, awwwww)
*Marshall JCM600 1x12 combo (sold it to fund my AC30)
*Vox AC30 with greenbacks (a proud, proud day)
*Fender Deville 4x10
*Fender Bassman 4x10
*Marshall JCM900 half stack
Vox AC30 with blues
Orange AD30r
Bad Cat Black Cat 30r (official #1...best sounding amp I've played)

Boatload of pedals...all my current ones are in the sig
Countless ATA cases, strings, accessories, misc.

All in all, a healthy 20 grand of gear, HOWEVER, new gear purchases were almost always funded by old gear sales. So I've probably invested about half that total.

I'm 20 (21 in March).

I'm working so I can afford guitar stuff easier than most of you guys (who are studying).

Amp:
$200 Vox Pathfinder 15

Pedals:
$160 Crybaby Original (Wah Wah)

$210 Boss RV-5

Anyway, right now I'm saving for a new guitar that will be a Les Paul...either a Gibson or a copy model. I'm also looking for a Telecaster as my back-up guitar. And a new amp will probably be some Marshall tube, haven't really thought that far yet.

Not that all you care this far down the list but oh what the hell I gotta post stuff somewheres.

My only guitar is a pawnshop ibanez RG. I repainted it trans blue, got Tony Iommi Pickups, phase cancelled, and knobs that turn backwards. did that for fun and I love em. It cost me like $200.
I win.

Strings? buy em music123 for like $5 a pack. I hardly ever break em, so maybe 4 packs? I got loads more of em in my underwear droor.

Dream guitar? carvin dc400, holdsworths, peizo, and a wilkenson. $1200. Also a medium blue mex tele with duncan antiquities a bigsby and lots of chrome. Backwards knobs, locking tuners, and a momentary button for doing radiohead covers. Like $1000 too.

For now, I got a crybaby, de7, phaser7, roland volume and a Marshall AVT275. It's too powerful usually but it's got a decent chorus. I need a clone now so I can use the reverb on the amp too.
So, $1600? not bad. mostly the amp, i needed it and didn't wanna buy 3 more later.

Well hi there,

I'm 28. (actually, as of right... now) I spend what I think a guitar is worth, but of my six guitars, five have been "labors of love." I guess that means more money, but ultimately it connects me in a special way to the guitar. Up front, the most I have ever spent on a guitar is $450 (Can.) however, by the time that guitar is finished (my Jazzmaster lawsuit copy) I'll have over $1000 into it. So call me nuts. It'll still have cost me less than a vintage Jazzmaster in similar condition.

I don't rip on Ibanez -- as a matter of fact, my Tele and my Jazzy were both born in the Ibanez factory, albeit in a different era. I have to agree, though I have picked up an RG, and it was a fine instrument, they're just not my cup of joe.

I don't know what I'd spend on my ideal / dream guitar. I'd like to think that, once my Jazzmaster is done, I'll have that guitar, and so the search will be over.

Thanks Telstar, at least I'm not the oldest person that's posted, but almost. Actually, I'm 51. That said, I took up guitar at 38, and then abandoned it for a while after having Carpal Tunnel Release performed on both hands.

What's important is that I'm now back and trying my damnedest to get my hands to do things that they really don't want to do! I'm into the Blues, and Chicago is definitely the place to be!

As for gear, I started out with a cheap (approx. $150) classical guitar and it grew from there. Here's what I've had in the past, and what I've got now. At the end is a short list of what I hope to acquire in the future.

Oh yeah dream guitar..Im not sure what it is right now but when i find one id spend however much i think it shoudl fairly cost i mean if its a crappy korean gutiar just with sick electronics i wouldnt spend over $700 for it but if its a custom built hand wired hand carved usa reissue historic model gutiar id go up as high as i should liek 20,000...were talking dreams though id never actually have that unlkess i was a millionaire

I will be 15 next month-I have been playing for three and a half years. I am really excited about some of my gear so even though I am on the 13th or 14th page I am gonna post it anyway.

I just purchased a '80 Marshall JMP (the 50 watt MV). I also have a 1960 ax cab (the checkerboard kind). The two together are sensational. I have been saving for a while and all I can say is that it was worth every penny. I also have a Fender deluxe 90 which is also a great amp. As for guitars....well I have an Epiphone Sheraton II and A Fender Standard Strat. Both guitars are terrific...especially the standard strat. My effects........I have a tube screamer(new), a boss ph-2 and aw-2, a boss tu-2, a digitech tone driver, and a digitech main squeeze (I don't use all of them though)

Gear value: A little over 3 grand but all the pedals (except the TS-808) were presents. This doesn't include the cables, strings, picks, pedalboard, and all the other goodies you need.

Effects I would like to get:
1. Fulltone Fulldrive 2
2. Crybaby or Tessee or Fulltone wah
3. Fulltone '69

As for guitars I want....well it would have to be a late '60s Gibson ES-335 in walnut but its a little out of reach......for now!!! My next guitar will probably be a highway 1 tele or an american strat.

Man, you need to learn the phrase "in my opinion". I've never played a XXX but I'm not a fan of the Recto, it just doesn't have the sound I want. Also, I've played a number of Ibanez's and Jackson's and will go with the Ibanez's every time. But in my case, unlike yourself, this is my opinion and I realize that OTHER people just might disagree and am charitable enough to allow them to. Wake up? No offense man, but I think that's kind of ridiculous. My main guitars are Gibson Les Paul Studios and Ibanez Jems and both can get great tones. I love my Gibsons but I can get a very similar sound out of my Jems and a wider variety of sounds with the five-position pickup switch and 2-humbucker, 1-single-coil config of the Jem.

Dude, that's just silly. You can't rock out with an Ibanez? Hmmm, news to me. Also probably news to Satch, Vai, Korn, Shadows Fall, Linkin Park, Incubus, System of a Down, The Mars Volta, Slipknot, Kiss, Iron Maiden and about 1,000,000 other guitarists. Do these guys all play jap-space-toy techy stuff? Personally, I think if you're a good player you can rock out with anything with 6 strings and 22 frets, but hey, what the Hell do I know?

Attention Fender and Gibson players: PLEASE refrain from telling everyone that these two brands are the only things with good "tone". Tone is a very subjective thing and alot of it comes from your fingers as much as your gear. Most people don't think of Kramers as the ultimate "tone" guitars but this guy named Eddie got a pretty good sound out of one a couple of decades ago. Personally, I'm not a fan of Strats for heavy rock but there are plenty of guys who use them for just that to great effect. I'm not going to make a statement like "you can only get a heavy sound out of a "x" brand guitar". Just stop it, I beg you! I'm going to go to the hospital now and hope they can stop the brain hemmoraging caused by some of the posts in this thread.

I agree fatgraymatt. Satch could probably walk a Les Paul through its paces, and I'd bet that Page could do so with an Ibanez! Clapton would more than likely sound like Clapton even if he were playing a PRS, and you could probably note Carlos playing a Tele! It might be interesting to watch Vai jam on an ES335, for that matter!

You can get wild or mild sounds out of most anything if you know what you're doing. Buddy Guy might look a little out of place playing a Warlock, but I'll bet that he could make it talk the blues.

Whatever you've got, just play it to the best of your ability.

34 yrs. old. i've had ibanez guitars and lots of other stuff in the last 15 yrs., in my opinion ibanez generally stands for fretboard gymnastics and they sound too modern usually designed for rock distortion, they're too pointy and come in gaudy colours. But having said that they are the best in their "field". Over the years i've found that older guitars have more "feel" & "soul", i got a fender musicmaster & gibson les paul junior, i also have a japanese jagmaster and a flying V i restored which ironically is a 70's ibanez! i like "alternative music" because it covers a wide spectrum and anything goes. you can write the best song ever with a l lV V progression, who needs locrian mode and sweep picking? But i cant fault anyone for being into that, i mean no offence... i'm also pleased i'm not the oldest on here!

38 years young, been playing on and off for 15 years or so,
my son (13 yrs. old) has been playing bass for 1-1/2 years and
that has really put a flame of interest and creativity under my ass,
I also have a twin brother that hands down is one great drummer.

well, i'm 26 and let me see, owned 5 guitars...

First guitar - some no name crap LP copy - £100
Squier Jagmaster (Japanese made) - £250
Rickenbacker 330 - £650
Danelectro Baritone - Gift
Travis Bean TB1000A - £900

So total outlay £2100 but i sold the Rickenbacker for £650 and the Squier (to a friend, so I can still use it!) for £150 so i guess i've only paid £1100 in total which is pretty good for having a TB.

28 yrs old playing since I was I think 10 or something like that. Dad plays as well so it was always around, as for what I spend on gear not that much anymore because I blew way too much in the past. Working in a music shop is dangerous to a gear freak, like an addict living with his dealer. Anyways, I could buy a really nice car with the money I have spent on gear but I really like what I have and I realize at this point any thing else is overkill. I really hate to think about all that cash. Put my Dads gear with mine and it so stupid, I think it is like 30 guitars or something like that....ridiculous. I have had too many guitars to remeber. Seek help while you can or this could happen to you.
My stuff:
58 lp ri, 52 tele ri, 65 jazzmaster, lp dc, 78 fender strat, fender bass vi ri, mex tele gib, es 335, 2 taylor acoustics, larivee 12 string
jazz bass,p bass, baby taylor, some nylon string classical I bought in mexico, mandolin
dsl 100, 2 marshall 4x12s, fender twin, vox ac 15, marshall studio 15, Marshsall 2x12
tons of freaking pedals, I love the things if I buy new stuff that is what I get.
Yes I am a certified gear addict .... help...

i'm turning 25 in just under a month, if i really felt the guitar was worth it, and had the money, i'd spend quite a bit, in the past i've bought:

Washburn Dime Model, new from around 96 or so, $400 w/HC
Carvin X100B head $600 used
Carvin 4x12 cab new from carvin -$300
Digitech RP12 new $385
Charvel bolt on broken fire red paint reverse head $200 used
Ibanez RG7620 brand new in 98 $1,200 w/HC
Ibanez Iceman new in 99 $300 w/HC
Ibanez GAX70 new in 99 $185
Heil Talkbox used $100
ProCo Rat new $60
Fender Telecaster, natural wood finish $300 used w/gigbag
Yamaha RGX603S used from G.C. $100 w/HC
Carvin X100B head w/ Road Electronics 4x12 cab used $250
Digitech "The Weapon" new $125

The guitars i'm currently looking at are all around $600, but if i had the money i'd definetely be willing to spend 3 or 4 Thousand on a guitar if i really felt it was worth it. I do agree gibsons and prs are overpriced on alot of their gear, but occassionally you find one worth the cost, and obviously i love ibanez.

I am 18..

Everything together is about £1625... which is like $3200 in USD. But that is my entire rig (excluding other instruments)

Guitars alone = £420 (for 2 guitars) = $835 ish USD... I love my cheap guitars, wouldn't trade them for anything in the world :)

if you want to include other instruments...

£50 for electric piano
£120 for electric violin
£100 for mandolin
£70 for lap steel

I'm 30.
Playing since puberty hit.
I got a 77' Gibson LP Custom about ten years ago. It was $800.
Most I would spend on a guitar would be for a Travis Bean. I have seen them go from $1,200 to over 2 grand. One day perhaps.
Ibanez's are great. They are the Honda Accord of guitars. They work great, last for a while, but don't re-sell for very much. I have owned 2 Ibanez Talmans in the past and one Ibanez 12-string. Just sold the 12-string last week for groceries.
I don't really think that Gibson and Fender are ripping anyone off more than Ibanez would. The villian, IMO, is the sly cat at your local music store who buys your used gear for little, and then jacks up the price on the sales floor.

Cheers!

Well "Boys"... They call me Dad in the band 'cause I'm always the oldest...I'm 53 and been doing it for +30 years. As far as prices paid the most I ever paid for a guitar was last year when I bought a Rickenbacker 660-12 for $1300. I have a 81 Gibson LP Custom I bought used for $400 in 83 when no one wanted them. One of my favorite guitars I play regularly is a $200 Agile 2500 LP copy w/ P90s that sounds and plays like a dream... it's all in the vibe and the mojo that the guitar gives you...not how much you spent on it....IMHO

I'm 24, and currently I own a Fender Fat Strat that I have customized to the point that only the body and neck plate are all that are left of the original guitar. I was given the guitar when I first was learning and have been making changes to it ever since:

Guitar #1

$0 Squire Japanese Strat (gift)
$100 Fender Mexican Strat neck w/tuners
$45 Fender Tortiose shell pickguard
$40 Fender "Fat Strat" pickups (I still to this day do not know what these pickups are or if they are the original "Fat Strat" setup... got them in a loaded pickguard on eBay. I know the humbucker is a SD "Invader" (which I hate), but the single coils are super hot and have fat magnets on the back...)
$0 USA Fender Vintage Bridge (trade)
$8 Gibson 3-Way Switch (for coil tapping).

There have been other little things here or there I've put into the guitar like new pots, etc. On time I tried to wire it like a Jaguar circuit, so there are all sorts of weird route holes under the pickguard. But over all it looks like I got this guitar that I love for about $200 give or take. Still my main guitar after all these years.

Guitar #2 (Sold)

$250 Used Mexican Fender Telecaster
$85 Harmonic Design Super-90 bridge pickup
$35 Used SD "Jazz" neck pickup
$25 New pots/wires etc.

Another great guitar for about $450, but alas, Teles just don't feel as good to me as Fender's other body types.

Guitar #3

Current project, bought a frankenstien Fender Jazzmaster MIJ for $450, ended up stripping it down to just the body, selling all the other parts for about $200, and then buying all American Reissue parts (except for the neck) in order to make it into a poor man's American Reissue. Even was brave enough to try a refinish myself which has been the hardest part. Still finishing it up. If I had it to do over again I probably would have saved up to buy a reissue used because with the refinish and the price of buying all the US Reissue parts it's been a lot of effort and for not saving very much cash on the deal. If the guitar had a Jazzmaster neck and a good finish when I got it then it would have been an easier job, but the original guitar would have cost me at least $300 more.

I like to see a really nice, well made guitar like the next man, but honestly I can't afford to pay $2000 for a peice of wood and some copper wire. Buying Japanese and Mexican Fenders at bargin prices and then upgrading them with the electronics of my choice has been great for me. It started as just being a result of lack of money but in the end I know more about guitars than most my friends and can do my own repairs, etc so it's been a great experiance.

i find your question interesting, I don't know why you equate an appreciation of musicianship with the gear that you use Ibenez/ Fender/Gibson or otherwise.

I've seen awesome guitarists getting totally phenomonal experimental sounds from no name £99 (uk) guitars.

I personally love Fenders and Have a Jagstang and Jaguar, I used to have a super strat (Hamer Diablo) which was also nice but I wasn't keen on the look when I moved away from playing metal.

I'm 24!!!!! play experimental/post rock

spend about £1000 + a year for the last couple of years
maybe £5k overall (which is about 8 years)

I would spend all my money but I have a Girlfriend and flat yadda yadda yadda.

Im 18, play mostly so cal punk.

right now im playing a jackson dinky, for all you naysayers whatever, it works and it's got descent tone, i picked it up for about $250. amp wise i have the most ghetto rig ever, I have a crate 4x12 (100W - got it for $250), Im running this old 70's peavey 100W 4 channel pa header I was given through it, and I run whatever distortion pedal I can find or have available. It all works, it's not like Im some king slayer or anything.

my soon to be rig (purchasing items by the end of next month)

-schecter C1 elite diamond series, amber finish (probably around $600 at guitar center)

-B52 AT-100 header (100W 3 channel tube amp, around $700)

im just gonna run the header through my crate cab until i have the money to get a new cab, probably gonna go with a marshall 1960AX, that will be in a few months though. Im upgrading my gear because, well, why not. This is probably going to be the most money i spend on a rig, im not gonna run any pedals or any rack mount advancements, I have no need

I'm turning 18 on Saturday, and have been playing for four-five years or so.

My only piece of expensive gear is my beloved Ashdown Peacemaker 40 112 Combo. It cost around US$500, new, and was a combination birthday and christmas present from my whole damn extenden family, with me chipping money in too. Other than that, my guitars:

Squier Strat - $180 new, with amp
Washburn WG587 - $160, new
Washburn Korean Maverick - $50, secondhand
Ibanez Soundgear SD400DX - $200, new
Yamaha RBX350 - $30, secondhand
Danelectro Grilled Cheese - $20, new
Boss AW-3 w/ expression peda - $80, secondhand

All that adds up to $1100, total. For everything except picks.

Personally, I'd never EVER spend more than a grand on a guitar. Five hundred dollars would be more like what I'd be comfortable with, once I get a job.

i'm 17 and i've spent from $75 (on a used ldt) to over $1200 (for a new ESP Standard Series Viper). but nowadays, i'll spend from $600 to over $1000 for a guitar.

and we all don't dislike ibanez guitars and hail gibsons and fenders. a fews days back there were threads about ibanez starcore or something like that (personally i own an artcore and a rg). and i don't like gibsons, fender or prs guitars. they're not really my style. i could of bought a Gibson SG but for the same amount of cash i got the ESP standard series viper which is basically an SG on steroids (24 frets, 2 EMG 81 pickups).

I'm 27 and think Ibanez guitars are great. I totally agree. I just think they all look like metallica.. The artcore series is doing something about that though.

In Canadian dollars, my rig is:
Godin Signature LG - $875
Standard Tele - $595
Traynor YCV-40 (used) - $575 (after replacing all the Sovtek tubes)
My 4 pedals and volume pedal altogether estimate - $330 (all used)

My total rig's cost: $2400

I have no desire to change the amp or guitars.. I'd buy a Vox AC30 if someone convinced me it would really improve my sound. I buy a new pedal ($40-$100) on ebay or from other bands every couple months on average.

Hi, my name is Travis and i'm 20

My gear is as follows with all prices in Canadian Dollars and excluding Tax:

Guitar Equipment:

Cort M600 - $700
Epi Les Paul Standard Plus - $700
Fender Super 112 - $400 (Used w/ Footswitch)
Behringer V-Amp Pro - $300
Behringer FCB1010 Foot Controller - $200
Boss MD-2 Mega Distortion Stompbox - $120 (Gift)
Small Army of cables and adapters - Approx. $400
Recording:

Behringer UB1832FX-Pro Mixer - $400
Shure PG-58 Microphone - $90 (Gift)
Samson 8KIT Drum Mic Package - $350

I love my setup and jsut recently have the tone that i've been searching for for the longest time for the money i spent i believe that my guitars sound awesome. If i had my choice, I would love to get a PRS Hollowbody, Custom 22, or Singlecut (when they were produced), Gibson LP Studio or ES-335, Fender HH Tele, Cort M700, or Washburn WI-64. Some of those are expensive, others are less expensive but its my personal favs. I am not a big fan of Ibanez, not because I think they are cheap, but because I just don't like the look of em, but thats only my opinion. As for a realistic price that i'd spend on a higher end guitar, around $2500 CND

i'm 22
I just bought a Silverburst Les Paul for $2250
I'm ordering a Japanese Custom Shop Malcomb for about $900, it has some shipping damage
i have a 40th Anniversary Twin Reverb $1200
currently my pedal board has
zakk wylde wah $90
digitech whammy $200
boss tu-2 tuner $90
plosive may treble booster(get one) $109
hao rust driver $80
mxr phase 90 (gift)
mxr flanger(awesome) $170
mxr stereo chorus $160
sib mr.echo (bought then sold then bought again) $75
4ms tremulus lune $100
boss gigadelay $180
pedal board $55
visual sound one spot $40
george l's $100
computer recording gear $350

plus i know i've spent a lot more on disposables, strings and tubes and poor choices, so there's more. i usually don't spend too much on a regular basis but that's about how much i've spent in say a year and a half of putting together my rig. it's pretty much finished now but you know how that goes, nothing ever stays the same for too long except keith's micawber and jimmy's number one.

I'm 19, about to turn 20, and according to the math I just did(might not be right, I'm a history major;) ), I've got about $7900 of equipment. Would be more but one of my pedals, and two I no longer use, were gifts. That's not counting the 5 years of Guitar Worlds, G1s, assorted other mags, and videos but that's not guitars.

I'm 31, and I've been playing since I was 7, but buying guitars since I was 16 and had my first job. That's where all of my money has gone over the years.

I've spent close to 5 grand on various Ibanez guitars, I'm on my 4th Fender, 3 Strats and a Tele, a few different acoustics.

Just because a guitar is more expensive, doesn't mean it plays better or sounds better. My newest purchase is a Fender Highway 1 Strat. Hands down, the best guitar I've ever played, and the best sound.

People can talk all they want about how poly doesn't change the tone one bit, but believe me, it DOES!! The nitro finish is the way to go. It really lets the guitar sing, the alder resonates so much better.

I'm old...recently lured out of musical retirement with a great offer to play and record with a very talented group of guys.

I have a black Epiphone Les Paul Custom with EMG 81 in bridge and 85 in neck.

A white Epi LP Custom with the EMG 81 and 85 config.

Ibanez RG 320-FM with Dimarzio Evolution pickups in neck and bridge position.

Ernie Ball Axis Super Sport.

Ernie Ball Silhouette Special.

Peavey Wolfgang archtop with flame maple top.

An Ibanez Jem copy that I paid $150 for but put over $600 into new pickups and hardware. Plays like a dream.

I play through a Line 6 Vetta II combo with a 2 x 12 extension cabinet and have the footboard.

Morley Bad Horsie 2 wah. Digitech Whammy pedal.

Also a few acoustics.

Phew! Oh to be young and rich like you guys! Where does the money come from? I'm into my fifties and spent my teen money on booze, girls and cars! I can only now start buying guitars now I have teens of my own and I must put my hand up as being the tight-fisted b*st*rd here 'cos my most expensive guitar is a 2nd hand Ibanez Jet King that cost me £160. Lovely neck and tone enough to amuse myself. Other stufF

CSL Jap 70's LP copy - great ballsy p/ups £30
CSL Jap 70's Strat copy - good enough for me, nice range of strat tones £100
Plus my old friend Kyoto 12 string jumbo bought with my first paycheck some time ago now!

Don't know enough to have a dream in mind, but I do lean towards those PRS at loads of cash on ebay - they just look so classy. Blue/green please.

AHAHAHAHA! I live in ALBUFEIRA!!!!
Compared to the 70´s it´s a piece of **** (even though I wasn´t born back then)... The village (which now is a town) has lost its character and became full of tourists...
I hate it...:(

Eeek, I shouldn't have read this thread. It's frightening how much cheaper you guys in the States have it compared to here in the UK.

Just out of interest, how much would a new Mexi Strat cost in the US? Here in the UK it's about £300, which is, what, $500?

I have a Schecter Corsair, which cost me over £400, and I love it, but I've since seen them on Ebay US for $400 :(

I think I need to organise a shopping trip to the States :D

i'm 28. i've been playing since i was about 11.

most of my gear i got when i was still in college and making FAR less money than i do now. frankly i dunno how i managed to afford it. i just pinched pennies. i was a total tight wad with my cash.

i have a personal rule. i don't like to spend over $600 for a peice of gear. the few times i have i was dissappointed and well...let's just say just because it's expensive doesn't always mean it's better!

*78 sg ($550, bought it just after graduating college)
*84 jcm 800 ($450, mid college)
*78 marshall cab ($450)
*silvertone ($150!)
*70's fender tele ($550)

i don't think i've ever spent more than $125 on a pedal, and that was when i was still in highschool and i totally got ripped off on my old ibanez AD9. most of 'em i got for under $50. i got my micro-amp for $25.

This thread scares the crap out of me, I feel small and usless in the face of Mesa Boogies, Dr. Z's, and Marshall half stacks - not to mention anything Gibson makes in the US. As for that comment about Ibanez vs. Gibson/Fender; Ibanez's aesthetics are an acquired taste as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure they're wonderful guitars, but everytime I see one I have horrbile '80s flashbacks that you young kids don't understand.

I'm 33 years old and have a staff position at a major university (though I'm also finishing my PhD so that eats up almost all my free time) - so its not like I'm poor.

Yet, I've never spent more than 225 US on a guitar (the total spent on my telecaster project). I bought my MIM Cyclone for $175, and my US made Ovation I bought for less than $100 because the headstock had once been broken off (plays fine though). My previous guitar purchases (various pieces of junk) were all around the 60-80 dollar range. I own two Vox hybrids, the VR 30 I got as overstock for 125 and as for my Cambridge 30, the idiots at the music store were convinced it was broken (it wasn't) and sold it to me for $150 several years ago. All my pedals were bought used, so they probably add up to around $250 themselves.

I don't really have a dream guitar, moreover, unless I make a living out of music I can't ever see myself exceeding 1K on an axe. I do dream of owning an AC30 212, but I won't cry if I never do.

I'm 28, and here's a list of my gear:

Guitars:
Epiphone LP Standard & Matching Case: $740
Paul Reed Smith Tremonti SE: $495
Jackson DX-10: $349 + $75 SD Invader Bridge Pickup
Ibanez 7-string: $359
Washburn Dime332: $200 + $89 SD Dimebucker Bridge Pickup

Amps/Cabs:
Roland Cube 30: $249
Crate Blue Voodoo BV120H: $495
Peavey Triple-XXX Head: $695
pair of Peavey 5150 Cabs: $420

plus over $4500 for my PA setup with 18's, 15's and 3200 Watts

if you want to total it up, you can, but I don't care to right now. needless to say, I've spent a lot of money on stuff, and some of it, I'm still paying for.
