I have the Ibanez RG7421XLGN and I started playing with a six string but when i got my 7 string it took me a while to actually learn how to play on it. the only thing about a seven string is you have a low b so if you were wanting to do a major scale starting out on the low b string you have to basically reshape the scale to fit the extra string, real confusing, but its a really cool guitar, but i mostly play stuff for a 6 string so im gonna go back and get a Gibson or PRS not sure yet

I learned to play 7-string by playing them in stores, and then the guitarist for the band I was playing keys in had one, so i learned off of it... I found it to be fairly easy, since I had already been playing for 5-6 years by the time I tried to do it. I seem to have some kinda ability to just "see" how to play multi-stringed instruments... picked up 5-string and 7-string basses no problem. I think if it works, you just know it, yknow?

i`ve got my ibanez universe 77 (the white one) back in 1994! no one was playing 7 strings back then, exept steve vail and uli roth (the first scorpions guitarist).

first, playing the guitar was a distaster. but over the months i learned how to user the little ****er ;-)

i was never into nu-metal stuff. i used the 7th string instead of a drop d tuning and for more experimental stuff and jazzy type music.

what i discovered later was that the uv 77 is a realy cool guitar with a wonderful sound. i played it so much for 6 years that now it is in a very bad condition. i guess i will do some reapairs on the guitar because i want to use it in the studio again...

I got a 7 string about a year ago now. I already had been playing for 7 years on a 6 string so was at a high level on that. I mainly got a 7 string because of korn and muse. Found it quite easy to adjust between the two. The hardest part for me was getting used to the fatter neck and being able to play songs i used to play on 6 strings. It took time but is no problem now.

I'm not entirely sure why people get so hung up on having an extra string. I don't think it's any special 'skill' I have to switch between instruments with different string configurations.

Probably has something to do with the fact that I learned to play using patterns instead of real music theory. :P

Try to play Muse - Citizen Erased on a 6string and you will know what we mean...

No, what I meant was that people seem to have so much trouble getting used to playing a 7-string. I'm fully aware of the benefits of having a low B :)

I played bass since i was 11 (now 16) and just bought a 7 string les paul (les pauls have got chunky necks anyway) to play jazz on. now i have the oposite problem.. my mamoth sized bass hands adapted to a 7string easily but trying to play a teeny weeny 6 string neck... impossible! tried to play a tele....

be very carefull when playing 7 strings, it sounds kinda dumb but you wont want to play a 6 string afterwards. I know traditonalists will say im talking bollocks but 7strings are tools not for "talentless Tossers" = Steve vai Talentless. Nu huh! 7 strings for jazz, nu-metal shredders.. 7 strings rock chunky 7 string necks are worth the hassles.. no de tuning.. more notes.....

people call 7 stringers un-original because of the whole nu-metal scene uses them.. but the people who say that then go home to their candy apple/black STOCK fender strat.

Anyway 7 strings easy to learn. impossible to stop..... ;)

Erm... am i a confused little boy or am i not the only one that's never heard any shredding on nu-metal "compositions"?
If it's the later, i think dropping the "nu" will do less insult to shredders :p

Anyways, my 7 string washburn is a ton of fun to play, and it opens many new doors (am i ooozzing with originality today or what?).

My question is... why dosent mr vai use his universe live? He's always running around with that jem called " Evo".

And can you guys recommend some good 7 string players that i should listen to? and yes, "good" dosent include the korn n00bz

Dream Theater's John Petrucci, 311's Tim Mahoney (on the more recent albums), and Fear Factory's Dino Cazares are among the ones I know of that you may or may not think are "good". Then again, I'm not you so I wouldn't know what you mean.

And on the subject of nu-metal things, it's only because of Korn and Limp Bizkit. Most stock "nu-metal" bands seem to go for drop tunings or baritones. 7-strings aren't really all that popular no matter what genre you're in.

"If you've got a seven string guitar and you only play the bottom three, why have a seven strig? For me to fully express myself I can't just be chunking around on the bottom strings. Now there is power in that, and I do that too, but it's not a one-dimensional kind of thing. If you really want to express yourself, step up on the high strings, bend those mother****ers all over the place, grab the whammy bar, use everything you got at your disposal" - Dimebag Darrell - genius
