I play chords with my fingers except I use my finger nails like it would be a pick for example g string(huh huh I said g string) hold down fret 3 and play open on the d string pinch your index and thumb tigether and strum away using the index finger nail. If of course you didn't already know that

There's too many pick players.. I think there scared or somthing to play with there fingers, I found that using the finger has a big impact with the ladies hehehe:D . Just kidin about that .... but why pick?

I love the Mark Knopfler approach of picking with your fingers, very twangy and has a good bite. Finger picking is great for co-ordination and that's how acoustics sound best to my ears. Plectrum playing allows you a lot of scope and allows some very fast and complex strum patterns that you just can't get with the other two methods.

So I'd have to say they're all great, but all for different uses.

i use both an equal amount,i like the way fingers sound yet i like aspects of strumming the hell out of chords...

I guess its because I like to have a big huge fat tone and I feel that using fingers I get that, also it just feels better to me. I started with pick but then evolved into using my fingers I don't know how it happened it just was like one day poof I use fingers and using picks felt wierd. huh go figure!:D

The tone I get from finger playing is so much better
than that from picking. I also think it's much more versatile approach.
I've tried both styles, and in my oppinion, finger style is the better.
Slapping and popping is also cool as hell, as long as it fits the music.

I prefer to play either way finger style or picks(it depends on the song) but slapping and plucking sounds very koolio:)

I really don't like slap much so I tend to play with my fingers.

I use a pick time to time, but my real sound is the fingerstyle one. I used to play an upright so I smack the thing like Geezer. It's not slap, but it's louder than plan fingerstyle.

Is it because you play covers alot? Because I did that alot when I first started playing and played however the bass player played it, but as a bass player I am still striving for the perfect tone that fits me, and I like to put my litle signature on everything so I use what I am most comfortable with witch is finger style playing. I think every bass player should do the same regaurdless of style of playing. I am ranting now, I apologize. but I think alot of you players will agree.

I find it interesting that 40% of the people who voted on this poll Played pick, I think that playing with pick is som much easier than finger or slapin, I also think that slapin is the hardest to master but I find myself at home playin finger bass. My hero is Cliff Burton. But I wonder what drives so many people to play with pick?

I just realized that this was a question for Bass players.

Well I'm a half-ass bass player and I admit that I like to use a pick. Probably because I really don't know how to play bass the correct way, so I just wing it by picking.

As we all know that this is all opinions, but why am I an Ass for speaking my mind. You said yourself that your a halfass bass player if thats the case then why did you bother to reply, wait I know because its your opion and i respect that but why drag me down for mine? I was curious to why people choose pick rather than finger, but of your gonna be a jerk off I can qoute you on that you didn't even "realize that this was a bass players thread". so if your going to be a prick go find somewhere else to prick around.
