My bass player is buying a new bass. We play heavy alternative/metal.

I know guitars pretty well, but I'm not too familier with basses.

What do you guys reccomend?

I've been looking at Ibanez, Warwick, BC Rich.

Must be good quality and well built, but not insanely price.

Like between $500-$1000 CAN$$

Thanks guys!!!

I know you pretty well mate, and i know the music you play, so...

Go and check out either a Squier Precision Bass or a Fender Mex Standard, well worthit...they can do mostly everything.

Good luck :)

Avoid Ibanez at all costs. Not sure what to recommend to you but I have to warn you, do not waste your money on a Soundgear. I owned one for 3 years.. waste of $700!!

Sounds like you just had a lemon - I have used several Ibanez basses and liked them. The usually have a good combo of te best aspects of Fender basses.

I own a Schecter bass as well (Studio 5), and I wouldn't trade it for the world. I am also playing some form of metal in my band.

I played a Soundgear Ibanez some years ago, and I found it a very easy bass to play, whereas I never really fell in love with the Fender basses.

In the end, most basses can play most anything, so the choice should be determined what you like to play on, the feel of the bass.

are u fussy about the looks and do u want a 'labelled' metal guitar. if not go for the g&l Tribute . its all great stuff and bloody cheap. they use same pickups and wood and even the same engineers as some were shipped over to set it up in the new factory. g&l bass/guitar at cheap prices

In my experience Ibanez tend to be the best around that price. I've got an Ibanez EDB600, i'm pretty chuffed, its got a great slap sound too.

Warwick's budget Rockbass series i was quite dissapointed with, so id reccomend you avoided them.

As much as I detest Ibanez guitars, they're basses in that price range are alot better than most others. I'm playing an Ibanez SR400 until I can get the cash together for something better, that ran me $750 CDN or so after case and tax and everything. They're not the greatest basses ever but for that price the selection is kind of limited, I tried out alot of other basses in that range and it was the one that played/sounded the best over all. With that bass and a much more expensive amp I get compliments on my tone all the time so you shouldn't have to worry about the bass holding your sound back when you start upgrading the rest of the rig.

Really though the best thing to do is just go to some guitar shops and try out some different basses, see what does it for you.

i think you woul dbe happy with a fender standard p-bass or j-bass. i have an american standard j-bass and i love it, but in looking for a second bass i've played a bunch of the mexican p-basses and really liked them. you could also find a used japanese one in that price range i think.
