Hw is the line 6 filter modulator? I've tinkered with it twice and have mixed feelings. The tracking seems to be pretty good for a guitar-synth-esque unit.
It's got a lot of great sounds, but it has some drawbacks IMO. For one thing, it would be nice to have more that 4 user settings. Also, it really needs a master effects level control. I've found the output to be substantially too loud when using an all effect mix, like some of the synth sounds.
You can get all those features and more with the rack unit, but the lack of a master effect volume would make me seriously rethink buying a FM4 again. I can pretty much work around the shortcomings now, but it's still proved to be a bit of a disappointment after owning it for a while. I plan on wiring in my own master effect pot as a more permanent fix.
I haven't used the rack unit, but it looks quite a bit better. It's also a lot more money, but cheaper than buying all the vintage gear that is emulates. Plus, both the rack and pedal do things the old stuff can't, like effect merging with the expression pedal.

Have you used the FM4 for any other type of processing besides guitar? I wanna buy it with an expression pedal for some of my samples, drum programming, vocals, synthesis, maybe some other things. I thought it would be a good makeshift electrix filter factory type box. I have the DM4 which can create some extensively ****ed up realtime noises (by virtue of it's digital inards I guess). Would the filter mod be good for this as well?
I haven't used the Line6 FM4 for anything but guitar yet, but I also own an Elextrix Filter Factory, and I wouldn't say those two units are comparable. The FM4 has some sounds that are supposed to emulated the EFF, but they are pretty limited. The EFF can't do as many different things as the FM4, but within the range of things it does it offers a lot more features and control options. So, if you want an EFF sound you need one of those, or a Filter Queen, which is very similar. The FM4 is more targeted at out-there, sci-fi type sounds and effects.

Does you filter factory generate A LOT of noise?
I ended up selling mine due to the fact that, even though I loved a few of the sounds, I couldn't get a clean enough sound from it no matter what I did.....
Nice gigs on both of you BTW.
I've never found the EFF to be noisy. Perhaps there was a problem with the one you had.
