View Full Version : Matching Ohms

I have a 4x10 that is 8 ohms and a 1x15 that is 4 ohms.
I just got the 1x15 because it was a steal and I am probably going to sell it because I know that mixing ohm ratings is bad, but I was wondering if there is a way to match the ohms so that they will come together in a fun number (2, 4, 8) instead of 2.67. My power amp is rated at 2, 4, and 8 ohms, so any combination really works for me. I know that a lot of people have had this issue and before I go off and hastily sell my new cab, I want to know if anyone has made this work.

Thanks

Matt

It's been a while since I took physics in highschool so this might be wrong but....

1/8 + 1/8 = 2/8 = 1/4

So 2 8 ohm cabs in parralllel are a total of 4 ohms. if you picked up another 8 ohm cab you could run the two of them at 4 ohms to match the 4 ohm cab.

If you only have one output from your amp then you could run the 4 ohm in parallel with the pair of 8 ohms which would be in parralel with thermselves and get a total of 2 ohms.

Tried to give a picture but the forum gets rid of large spaces so it didn't work. I don't know how to set the stuff up like that (I play through a combo not a stack) but if you can then you'll get the right ohms.

I'll probably sell the 4 ohm before I go out and buy another 8 ohm...and could you imagine the monster that would be to carry around? 2 15's and a 4x10 or 2 4x10s and a 15...either way that is some serious cargo.

Anyone have ideas on a good gigging combo so I can get rid of all this heavy stuff?

All depends on the kind of sound you're going for but I was impressed by the SWR Workingman 15, if you go for that keep the 8 ohm, the combo has a single 15 and runs at 160 watts, if you hook up a 8 ohm extension cab it runs at 200 watts and plays through the 15 and the cab. You'll have nice clear top end from the 4 x 10 and lots of bottom end from the 15.

Ampeg's are nice but I'm not sure about how well their combo's would work for a gig, they're pretty small. No extension out on them so you can't hook up a cab to move more air.

Fender Bassman, the 400 is nice but it's a beast, and isn't real cheap, the smaller ones don't have any extension outs, but the 400 does.
