What the hell is going on with all these **** links on the forums?
Maybe its time to implement some kind of screening for new members...
Its just an idea...I dont know how it could work in a practical sense.
yes, a better screening system would stop this.

To better screen new users, we are considering blacklisting email addresses from certain free email providers (e.g. hotmail.com and yahoo.com). Thus, new users would have to enter an actual email address from a real ISP. There are a couple of reasons for this:
1) Accountability. Setting up a new free email account takes very little time, and thus people can set up accounts for spamming and trolling boards like these. Normally, the accounts become disabled quickly, but not before damage has already been done. By contrast, it takes a little more time to set up an ISP account, plus some other forms of id like a credit card. While email spammers often go through the trouble to do that, it's less common for board trolls to.
2) Everyone on these boards needs a valid email address so we can communicate with you. If you request email notification of posts to a thread, we can't have those notifications bouncing back to our server. Likewise, if we need to send a private email to you about your posts on these forums, we need to have some other way to reach you than via private messages on GeekChat.
I understand that many people use free email accounts to protect their 'real' ISP accounts from becoming spam traps, and wish to protect their privacy as well. We consider your privacy very important, and use the information you give us for the site newsletter only.
For those of you who have already registered using an email account from one of those providers, please know you will not be blocked from using the forums. However, if you make a change to your email account in your profile, you will be required to input a non-blacklisted ISP account at that time.
Note that we have not implemented this limitation yet. It is under consideration. Feel free to voice your opinion here.

Man, don't blacklist msn.com or hotmail! I bet nearly 90% of the addresses on here are from those two domains and 99% of those people will be normal rule abiding people. Why ostracise the 89% using free email for the sake of saving the remaining 10% of users from a small minority .

yah, i use a hotmail e-mail address as well. i know it may be difficult, but i hope that we can come up with a solution that still lets us use free e-mail accounts.
thanks!

Ok, ok, ok. We have *not* implemented the "no free email account" signup filter, and we may never do it. However, we may temporarily disable someone's account if mail sent from our system is bounced back to us because of an invalid email address. The reasoning for us requiring valid email addresses is outlined in my previous post to this thread.
