Hey.
I've been playing guitar for a couple of years, and have been asked to play bass for my friends' band, however we've decided that a 5 string sound is very important, both to the sound and for covers. Can anyone recommend a decent 5 string for under £250? I've been looking at Vintage mostly, brand isn't an issue, I just want a workhorse that will be good for practice and the occasional gig. Thanks
Take a look at something along the lines of a Ibanez SR 405 (I think that's the number) they're guitars aren't very good but for a bass in that price range they're well built, play good, and sound decent. Try out Fender Mexican made basses without any more knowledge as to your sound I can't really say much about whether a jazz or p bass would fit better. Really most bass companies make 4, 5 and 6 string models of all or most of their basses, if the 4 string is a good bass the 5 strings usually is too. I'm not completely sure how much £250 is compared to the CDN Dollar but I think those should be in your price range. I can't reiterate enough though to just go out and try some different gear, what works for me might not work for you, and what I'd never even think of using might be the perfect instrument for you.

I want to play modern rock eg; QOTSA, Muse (I'm not really a fan but the band is covering some of their stuff for a warm up).
If the bass can handle heavier stuff as well, that would be good, but not a priority. I plan to run it through a distortion pedal, I'm gonna try it through a; USA big muff pi, Ibanez sm-7, Marshall Jackhammer and a Dano Pastrami, and go with whatever sounds best.
£250= $690 canadian=$440 US

Me too, but I though didn't think that would be as fitting.
For almost any Warwick 5-string, it's easily $1,000+.
The bassist in my band just bought an Ibanez BTB 5-string bass, though that might be a tab bit pricey. However, he loves it.
On a side note, I played a Warwick the other day (through an Ampeg head/cabinet). Oh man that was sweet...
Yeah, an Ibanez BTB 5-string is about $600.

Ya, about the warwick thumb 5 string. That bass is well into the 1000+ range. It's the top of the line when it comes to warwick.
I second Ibanez
