Dammit, people! Stop reading this and go buy a Sansamp Bassdriver DI! NOW! On any modest set up, it will do more for your tone than anything else you can imagine (including a new bass.)

I used to run
a G&L L1000 into my Fender BXR 100 (i'm omiting all other pedals at the moment.) Then I purchased a Sansamp Bassdriver DI. WOW! Holy CRAP! My tone improved by 200%! Then, purchased a Musicman Stingray 4 string. First, I played it without the sansamp, for the reason of my juxtapostion. After I played it with the sansamp, I was still blown away. I'd say that my tone of stingray without sansamp was VERY marginally better than my G&L with sansamp. It was hard to decide that. My stingray with sansamp makes up for my crappy 100 watt solid state combo. I can't wait to get my SVT 4-Pro and avatar 4x10 :)

In closing, GO BUY A SANSAMP BASSDRIVER DI!

I started playing bass in 1989 and since then I have needed a total of two effects. A EH-R Big Muff Pi and an EH Bassballs. Even with those I used them maybe 5% of the time. Other than that it was only bass+amp to get the sound I needed. Bass just doesn't need (or even sound good) with effects IMO.

The only other thing I think I could have used was an EQ because I used so many different amp setups.

The SansAmp isn't an effect per se, it's a bass DI that you can also run into a head or cab. It does make it sound a lot better. If I played out with bass enough to have a seperate bass rig, I would have one.

trust me, even though you love your bass sound now, compare it to your amp with a sansamp in front of it, and youll see what youve been missing. it makes anything sound much much much better, my ampeg sounds like trash compared to with the sansamp, and i thought it was great without it. its not an effect, its a pre amp.

great for recording, and as a very nice bass-tuned eq pedal...

i also use it for DI-ing guitars as well....the bassman setting is very cool for this.

it's a sonic swiss army knife.

i love mine and would be lost without it.

on the past couple of mini-tours i have done as a bass player i didn't bring an amp and couldn't have been happier. got it in the monitor and i was fine.

i record with it all of the time and it sounds perfect to me.

it is also really great as a pre-amp right into a power-amp than cabinet.

one of the best boxes ever.

Tech 21 is great.
I have a TRI AC and think its the poop.

agreed - the triAC is rad. i used to do (sometimes still do) a laptop and guitar thing where i used a triAC into the PA instead of an amp and it sounded great.

i use the sansamp as a distortion....works great. i hate to DI my stuff, so i haven't tried it for that. i always get a mic on my amp. but as a distortion...particuarily when used behind ANOTHER distortion, it is fantastic.

I would give away every effect I own before parting with my BDDI.
It is worth every penny...save, save, save

I look at it this way it makes my solidstate amp sound as good* as a great tube amp.

Whine away about the cost or that it's not an effect (crank the drive and the presence and tell me that again) all you want - but if you want killer tone on a budget that the box you want

*I know that the purists will say, "only a tube sounds like a tube!"

there seems to be this popular notion on this board that purchasing some product will cure your ills.

I don't think it's about curing - the quest is great tone and then effects to enhance, wobble, stretch or just plain grind that tone for the desired responce.

I'm guessing that everyone that visits this forum can't drop a few grand on a dream bass and then drop even more money on a powerful tube amp.

For the small venues that I do I was really happy with my '79 Ibanes Studio into a Fender BXR 200..... BUT adding the BDDI was the missing link to add the warmth that I was looking for with out dropping a whole lot of money on a Eden or SWR.

It's fat, warm, and really smooth.... what great bass tone is. Don't be threatened by it - try it. If you don't like it, that's great.
But don't miss out because you haven't tried it.

the whole mood of this thread changed so much from the start to the end....gotta say that the bass di thing is cool, my bro wants to get one to cut down the 400+ pounds that his ampeg stack weighs as he only plays small venues and lugging that in a non metal scene is just nuts.

plus he wants the distortion in it...i think he was lookin at the mxr one though...can't remember.

yah it was the MXR bass D.I.

way more features than the tech 21 and you can turn the distortion on and off without having to bend over.

both are great though.

I haven't tried the MXR one but I remember hearing that it wasn't nearly as good. And if you don't feel like bending over, you could always use a seperate pedal for distortion.

the mxr is not as good. the distortion is pretty mediocre, and the clean tones dont compare to the sansamp. it gives you more bottom end and volume but thats about it.

meh it's not my choice, it's all up to the bro

but one question...isn't bass about having low end?
and what bass player wouldn't want to have more volume?
you gotta love being able to be heard.

I would prefer him to be the forefront of our band than me...guitar parts only pave the way for a great bass line.

im not saying those arent good things, im saying that with the mxr thats all youll get. theres a lot more to great tone than being loud and bassy.
