Hello all,

I just got an awesome guitar, a 1987 gibson sg '61 reissue in a rare white finish! Now i am just trying to make sure I don't drop it when I am weilding it on stage. Does anyone have suggestions about what brand and model strap locks are the best or most convenient? So far I know of Dunlop and Schaller locks, but then each company has different models of locks, so I'm just lookin for some advice on what to get amongst all those choices.

Schaller locks with a leather strap. The whole strap doesn't have to be leather, but the ends where it goes into the straplock.

The only way to drop your guitar is to tear the leather or rip the straplock out of the wood. If you're in a situation where that happens, a little ding on your guitar is probably not your main concern.

i wouldn't go with dunlop locks, because you have to drill into your guitar. schaller locks use the same sized screw as a regular strap button, they are what i use.

if you have an instrument you don't wish to modify at all, i'd go with the nylon washer-type straplocks.

There's also Planet Waves locking straps, the ends have a locking mechanism instead of the traditional hole, never failed me yet:D

I have Dunlops on one of my guitars (not recessed yet) and Schaller on the others. I actually like the Dunlop more because they don't jiggle like the Schaller. Plus you do have to option of recessing them.

but if its an SG the neck strap button might get mighty annoying if it was a schaller type... i'd usually say go for the schaller, but the dunlops, with a recessed one at the neck might be best.

ehh... dont listen to me, i have no idea what im talking about... one of my axes had dunlop, another schaller..

Although the Schallers may jiggle a little bit, I like how they hook on to the guitar better. They have that U shape rather than just clipping straight in. Also, the easier installation is a bonus.

I have a strap with those too. They're very sturdy. Just they don't look all that stunning.

Drill a 1/4" hole in your strap and screw the strap /w the strap-nub to the guitar. Ain't goin' nowhere.

i didnt have to drill holes for mine. they fit perfectly in the old holes.

I use schallers, basically anything from shchaller is good stuff...tuners, straplocks, etc. Their german made, so you know its usually very high quality, just like german cars!

I've been using th dunlop ones for a while and never had a problem with them. But do you know what works best is the old screw and washer.

I second that.

I have used the dunlop ones, the schallers are 20x better!

it is simple science here. you have to drill for dunlop but its easier to pull out something smaller out of wood. bigger screws make it stronger

Schallers for me - keep my 10/11 pounder Les Paul in place really well.

That said, the placement on the back of the SG's heel means that you can't really go for them... you could get a combo of both? :)

I went to my guitar store today to get strap locks for my Casino. I didn't know what I was after as I haven't had any before and the guy gave me these Fender Strap Locks (http://www.stringitup.com/fender990690st.html). I notice they are made by Schaller so I take it these a good ones? Are they hard to install, should I have any trouble putting them on my Casino. I don't have my guitar with me at the moment so I can't try them out. I just use one of those Ernie Ball polyster straps or whatever they are. Will these be ok?

I just read some reviews on music 123 that said the Schaller's don't fit Gibson's and Epi's. Will these work on my Casino then?

I have an SG with Schallers. The neck button has never been a problem. BUT, the screw on the back edge has come out a couple of times. I make sure both are screwed down tight before every gig. Also make sure the hex nuts on the strap itself are tight, they tend to loosen over time. Nothing a little clear nailpolish on the threads won't fix.

The only problem I have with the Schallers is that you hvae to fine your own screw and screw head as well so that it fits into the hole.

The Schallers are nice, yes, but make sure you have someone install them because they'll know if you need to file the screws and what not, I had to do that on mine and it was a pain in the ass. I love how the DiMarzio Cliplok straps work, just screw in the screws it comes with after you stick the strap under the strap button and you're set.

I have Dunlop Straploks on every guitar I own and i have never had a problem. They are also cheaper than Schallers at most music stores around here too. I have a friend with schallers and he has never had a problem either, so it is pretty much up to you. Either will suit you just fine.
