lately ive been thinking about either getting a cutaway acoustic electric or a strat. what is the best for the money with a built-in preamp? my price range is under 400 dollars ideally. i might spend more if i can get a good deal.

The best deal for you IMO is a "Big Baby" Taylor with a guitar shop-installed Fishman pup. Buy used and you're in your price range.

he's not going to see a maton in kansas city. good guitars though... they're not very internationally known or found. pretty much a southern hemisphere thing...

definitley true. ive never even heard of it.

the one thats in the 'lead' at the moment is the . dean exotica FM (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=040107144919024208114202398344/g=guitar/search/detail/base_pid/519828/) in transparent blue.

I really like my Westfield, it's under $400. Acousticly it sounds great, the Preamp is good too, maybe a little too trebly but that can be changed after. The back of the guitar is curved which makes standing with it hard, unless you're waif thing. But it's good for finger picking.

i personally wouldn't expect their acoustics to eb godo when lookign at their electrics. but they are very good guitars and sounds really good. Ovations are also good.

my yamaha a/e cutaway was 400 bucks. i love it. built in preamp, under the saddle pickup, great sounding guitar, great playing guitar.

i <3 it.

also the big baby suggestion is good if you want something quieter. personally i think they're too quiet. my buddy has one and my yamaha drowns him out.

its an fgx-413 sc btw.

Jimbo, get a Seagull. Handmade in Canada, around $300 US, with a case. I love mine more than my $800 Takamine.

This is the one I have. (http://www.seagullguitars.com/products6%2Bfolk.htm)

Every Dean I've ever played was a pretty painful experience.

Does anybody mic their acoustics anymore? You could get an excelent straight acoustic for under $400, but could you get a comparable electric-acoustic?

Especially when Ovation is out of the question. Oddly enough, the medium back is much better than the large back when unplugged, in my opinion. Which I suppose is the type of feel you're talking about.

Hello everybody--time to jump on the Dean train my friend :)

I have a Dean Tradition S CE (http://www.deanguitars.com/tradition_s_ce.htm) and I personally think it's a great instrument. It's a cutaway (C) and electric (E) and fantastic to play. Very solid and sweet sounding. And the finish is killer (even tho it shouldnt really matter to a musician, but I have gotten compliments all around about how "firey" the mahogony sides, back, and neck look, and there's not a surface error on it--impecable quality!)

I paid $420+tax from a small guitar shop here in Redondo Beach, but the guy offered to knock it down if I bought it the day I picked it up (which I didn't and ended up coming back and playing the full price)

The reason I bought it was I was looking for a solid all-around AE guitar. I went to the small shop first, tried it, then went to GC right next door and tried all the expensive Gibson models--nadda one sounded better. I was impressed.

My only complaint is the electronics (but that's because I hate piezo pickups on full-sized acoustics, mic me or go home).

A great deal--I'll vouch for Dean :)

I know there are alot of a/e guitars out there at a cheap price. However, once you plug them in you find out why they are cheap. I've found that Takamine builds excellent a/e guitars around the $500-$600 range. The EF341C is a phenominal guitar. Plus, they lowered the price by $250. I purchased one for $900 about 5 years ago and now I see them selling for $600-$650.
