View Full Version : dave matthews... overrated.

okay, so i personally think that dave matthews is okay. but i think in the minds of some people, he is elevated to god-like status and i simply can't see it.

yes, i know that it's personal preference and all that jazz but i think the problem runs a bit deeper. every acoustic guitar carrying kid at college plays dave matthews stuff ALL THE TIME and it has just RUINED any of his songs for me. not to mention it probably ruins the creativity of the kid who wants to emulate dave matthews all the time, etc.

i dunno... maybe it's just me. and maybe it's just an american phenomenon.

yes, dave matthews is deified at college campuses across america. when i was in college, that's all i ever heard. my roommate freshman year had 20 dave matthews cds! i didn't know he had 20! and they all call him "dave," like they are good buddies or something. of all the bands around here, half want to be the dave matthews band, and the other half want to be godsmack. i just don't see what the hype is about.

i was messing around with an acoustic guitar at a relatively chill party in college and here are the questions i get hit with:

"are you going to see dave?"

"do you know how to play any dave?"

"you should learn how to play some dave!"

"dave is the greatest. you should learn some songs!"

"can you play 'Crash'?"

"dude, all the chicks like dave stuff. that's all i play! here give me the guitar..."

and then my night of playing is done while all the chicks swoon over the guy that plays the same dave matthews riff from the same song OVER and OVER again. and perfectly. because that's all he practices.

haha, that was every night in my dorm. "hey, play some dave!" then my roommate told me i sucked because i couldn't play any of his songs. i told him to put on a cd, and i figured out a few riffs. that shut him up.

Dude, I like Dave Matthews... but I started listening to him when I was like twelve, and the stuff that is being brought out now is not even like the stuff he brought out then. I think the reason I liked it so much back in the day was because of the orchestration. You could really hear the Dave Matthews BAND back then... now it should just be called Dave Matthews. Carter Beauford is an awesome drummer, and although I'm not one to judge violin and clarinet players, I really like what they do... not to mention Stefan Lessard is an amazing bass player. I see wat you mean though about the colleges and stuff. I have a ton of friends who went off to college last year and now I'm seeing them for the first time... and I could see how they would worship "Dave".

LOL!

yah, i have never been complimented on my acoustic guitar playing (which is not bad at all!) until i started playing some dave stuff here and there.

yah, my best friend has been obsessed with them since the early days of dave matthews. old stuff is still pretty good... but i think it's some of the wacky fans that get under my skin.

a lot of times for them, the height of music is... dave matthews. and that's just not right! :D

this discussion brings up an important point, i think. we all know some people who have a weird obsession with dave matthews or phish or nirvana or whoever, the kind of people that have all the albums, go to all the shows, and play all the songs on their guitar at the parties. i think the minute your respect for a band or individual becomes envy or a desire for emulation, you're ****ed. this has to be avoided. some of these dudes are damn good players, but they end up blatantly stealing style. now i know we all are stumbling around in the gray area trying to pick up some licks or some new chords & effects, but im talking about the ones that put their creative energy aside in favor of sounding like someone else. its really none of my business if they do so, it just disappoints me, because creating music without the desire to be like whoever-when it works-has to be the most rewarding thing ive experienced. ever. ****, i got too deep, sorry guys. i guess the point is not to be afraid to get your own style. so cliche....

i gotta say....i am big on melody....and i think dave matthews melody is a little corny and gay at time...e.t. trippin billies.....but that guys chord formation is pretty crazy....he must have a **** load of theory under his belt...and you do have to have some respect for carter beuford....but as i band...and as far as the music they write....slightly overrated.

thanks dude. im really glad there's a place like this where we can speak up. everybody and their uncle plays guitar, and its nice to have a place with no egos and no bullsh*t where all of us can talk. there's an endless volume of info among us, and we gotta share to be our best.

by the way, what do you guys think about dave matthews' lyrics?

i saw a john mayer video, and i swear if i just heard the music without seeing the guy singing, i would have said "man this new dave matthews stuff really sucks!" the guy even does the same kind of dance dave matthews does.

But for the most part, I keep my favorite hidden treasures to myself or share with others I deem fit.

yeah, because sharing your favorite cd with someone is going to turn that band into a huge pop phenomenon and their songs will lose all their meaning.

if i hear a band i really like, i can't help but have everyone i know listen to it.

I've been told that Dave Matthews can't read music, although I can't confirm that. All I have to say is that he must have large hands. I don't play that much of his stuff, but the stuff I do I use for stretching exercises.

SADLY it's just an american phenomenon!!!

believe me, over there the situation is terrible!!! I'd love to hear people ruining his songs instead of the crap I usually hear... not to mention the fact that the idea of learning properly how to play guitar or simply tune it, it's way out of the mind of most adolescents around here... I used to spend entire lessons with some of my "pupils" about that!!!

anyway, I love matthew's music, even though I only have a couple of albums... it could simply be a matter of taste!

hmm. i wouldn't be surprised if he couldn't read music. i think there are a lot of musicians who can't properly read music, but are simply great writing music.

he took lessons after the beatles decided to stop touring. that's where all his diminished chords come from!!! he learned a lot of stuff as well after beatles quit up. peronally I love his melody style using the bottleneck (I'm thinking about "free as a bird").

much similar to ritchie blackmore (?!?) style with bottleneck!!!

yah, george is awesome. he has a great sense of chord structure and melody. do you have his latest album? it's good stuff.

actually no. I have something like 5 albums of eric clapton and the cream's 4 cd box to burn in my hard disk. it wouldn't be smart to download george's discography!!!

I agree about chord structures: "something" was one of the first bealtes song I learned, only because it was so structered and complicated, and then it perfectly suits my voice (it's the only one I can sing quite decently).

they all said he was the quiet one, but I do think that even in the first days, his arrangment's choice where basilar to the fab four sound. and george martin agrees with me! (read in an interview).

just listen to the mega pop tunes "I got my mind set on you": it's just ****ing awsome!!! oh dear, and then we have crazy town or christina aguilera on mtv... it's so sad!!!!

To me, Dave Matthews music is something I wouldnt have minded inventing. Music that is rather complicated to play but girls still die for. I think he is the most successful nerd in music.

This is why I want to mule kick Dave Matthews in the chest.

On the "attractive meter" he is lower than me. But girls love his music over mine. Also I can't play about two thirds of his music without feeling like the bones in my hand are about to pop out. The only solution: one mule kick to the chest. Thats all. Nothing serious. Just a strong kick so he knows the pain I feel.

But then again his music is so "gay" sounding. How come people like Kenny G get ragged on, but chicks dig Dave? Is this a "phallic symbol" thing, where Dave's big ol hunk of wood could kill Kenny's sissy, thin flute-o-phone?

Dave Matthews is a very rare occurence in today's music business. He is popular for all the right reasons and you have gotta hand it to him for that. He is a great songwriter and the entire band in general is just as great. Don't check out any of his studio albums, flip straight to the live discs and check out the jams. Its amazing that such a musical and jammy group can make it so huge. There are plenty of groups out there "making it" for the wrong reasons, but dave is not one of them.

the chord progressions he does are incredible. i can't even play those chords, let alone play them in a smooth progression

yah, he definitely filled out the sounds of the band. and he introduced new stuff too... like sitars and what not.

harrison is brilliant and underrated.

i don't deny that he's a good songwriter, writes solid tunes, and his drummer - carter, i think - is incredible.

however, i think he's overrated, that's all... for a lot of kids, the musical sun rises and sets with Dave Matthews and i think Dave ruins it for a lot of other acoustic players who have to live up to a dave matthews cover song to get people to think that he's good.

he is overrated thats the point isn't it to be overrated. all the money, selling out. thats what the music industry is all about. i want to see where the art has gone. once dave matthews came out it hit a nerve in restless young girls and men are shure to follow. i don't listen to him all that much. but i do like the music, everyone in the band are damn talented including dave but sometime hype ruins a band.

Since I just came into the U.S. half a year ago, I agree it's just an American Phenom. I've been playing the guitar for nearly 6 years when i was in Asia and I've never heard of this guy before. I tried listening to one of his songs but I guess his music isn't appealing to me. it's just the musical taste... he does have artistic talent and technique. The teenybopper fans turned me off a lot, I usually only see that kind of crowd at Britney Spears or N'Sync concerts. They're the ones that tend to overrate him since they've turnd him to mainstream... As an artists, you can't choose your fans. Different people like different music. The biggest factor that comes into play when overrating an artist is of course, MTV, when a video gets played everytime you switch to that channel, you know that artist is overrated.

as i read these, i'm thinking that it's not a matter of being over-rated but a matter of the fact that's he's the hottest thing going right now -- i can't really believe anyone really thinks he's over-rated; just tired of the over-exposure but that's what the 'fame machine' does -- same as when The Beatles or The Stones or Peter Frampton or whoever was blazing hot --

Dave Mathews tho isn't over-rated -- he's really a gifted guitarist but i understand your feelings

i HATE soccer moms.

one major problem is that they think their kids are more special and unique than anyone else... so soccer mom thinks that she deserves special treatment, simply because she decided to have kids.

his tours may still sell out, but in terms of records and quality and what not... matthews is NOT the hottest thing going right now.

dave matthews is our modern day grateful dead and even then, they fall short of all those awesome Dead tunes.

matthews... great guitar player. can be a pretty good writer. but he is overrated... he is NOT as good as some people say he is. he is NOT a guitar god. or just a god for that matter. he is just a guy that plays folks-y music and managed to hit it big at the right time.

I never said that I liked John Mayer as much as the beatles...not even in the same league as far a songwriting goes.
all I know is that I can easily drown out his fans and songwriting(when needed) just to hear him play guitar. he has great tones. his band is also really tight...a lot of great sounds.
as far as the overrated thing goes with Dave matthews or anyone else, who cares what people think...listen to what makes you happy.

will it get us anywhere? probably not. but i think the discussion is interesting in itself. :)
