View Full Version : Lynyrd Skynyrd
I can play Sweet Home Alabama on my guitar but the tone doesn't sound just right. I usually use distortion and overdrive and turn my overdrive on low and my distortion up, but it still isn't the exact right sound. Any help?
I'd lower the distortion, boost the mids and highs and cut out some of the lows. What kind of guitar...the studio version was played on the bridge and middle pickups of a strat.

That is a KILLER song (I heard it again today while watching "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre II" with Shannon Elizabeth init? I only had time to catch the first 20 min. of the flick. Anyway,
Yeah man, I love the part when he sings "Well I heard old Neil put her down. Well I hope Neil Young will remeber. A southern man don't need him around anyhow!"
....and the part when they slow the tempo down slightly and go "ooo, ooo, ooo".

I am a long time Skynyrd nut. This song comes off the most authentically when played clean with little to no distortion on a Fender Strat... 4th position toggle (out of phase). Sounds great thru my Twin Reverb using no pedals at all. There was a reason they replaced their lost members with other strat players.
It's all about the twang.

Yea I love Skynyrd, never seen them live though but Travis Tritt who I have seen and met a few times has been playing Synyrd songs on his tour but they vary depending on the show, luckly when I was there I got to see him play Sweet Home Alabama. He was playing a Strat with SD HotRails in the middle and bridge pickups (in that possition) through a CyberTwin and his guitarist Wendel (who is a really nice guy as is Travis) played a confederate flag PRS through a CyberTwin.
