hey,
im not sure if i should be putting this message in the guitar>pedals board or songwriting board so ill put it in both.

----------------SITUATION---------------
Im having a problem writing second guitar parts to the ones that i already have. I've tried using scales and stuff and i think that they fit but i can never really tell until i teach them to the other guitarist and play it together. and if it doesnt fit then everyones like "y r u wasting our time, just write it to fit"

-------------QUESTION------------------
so i was thinkin about buying a pedal that i can play the original riff into, and it'll repeat that riff over and over again so i can write a second guitar part and hear how it sounds. im not sure if i need a :

-sampler
-digital delay
-delay modeler
-phrase sampler

could someone please tell me which of these i am trying to buy, and if so, could you tell me some good models/brands

i have a boss DD-3 and it has a "hold" option.

you click it on, set the length of the delay... then you play a chord or a short riff (alas, it can't be that long)... then you hold the pedal down and it'll repeat. then you can play anything over it.

i'm sure the later models have a similar option.

a delay with a sort of "hold" option would probably be the cheapest way to go.

i own a dd-5....the maximum for the hold setting on that pedal is 5 seconds. He may have had a rackmounted sampler or something of the sort.....can't even get a 20 second sample on a dl-4...

I have a Zvex Lo-Fi Loop Junky that I like a lot. It can record analog loops up to 20 seconds long. It is -- as the name indicates -- VERY "Lo-Fi", but if you're into that sort of thing...

...for the price of a looping delay unit you oughta just get a cassette four track. mark my words: IT WILL DRASTICALLY IMPROVE YOUR SONGWRITING SKILLS. I learned so much by laying down a track, then figuring out how to make something work over top of it. check one out!

ya that's all you need a cheap tape recorder it helps so much or just sit down with the other guys and play a small riff sometimes the best songs come out of no where. By just making up stuff on the spot
