I'm a long time rock guitarist but I want to broaden my horizons and learn some Mexican style guitar. So should I get a steel string or nylon string for this?

Which style of Mexican guitar music are you wanting to learn?

I'll probably try a little bit of everything. Mariachi is the only style I know by name but I am aware that there are others. I live in southern New Mexico for five years and I allways enjoyed the bands you would hear playing for tourists in town squares and cantinas.

In that case definitely a nylon string guitar. But you can still develop the technique on electric or steel string.
