Something that hangs on to lows really well and has a gating function to get me those "crackle" sound.......

Well, my favorite is the EH Micro-synth, which also comes in a bass version (though I used the guitar version with no problem). You can blend in an octave-down and octave-up signal, plus the clean signal, with the fuzz, which creates this huge fat sound. It's also got a filter section for synthy noises. It's really cool, poke around on eBay and you might be able to find one for $180.

Aside from that, the Marshall Shredmaster and Danelectro Fabtone are excellent for really low-end distortion, and the Rat is good if you don't mind losing a little high-end for the extra gain (I don't).

To be honest with you, I adore the Big Muff for guitar but for bass it's just not enough. Though a Graphic Fuzz (basically a Big Muff with an EQ) might be way better.
