I reluctantly tried out a peavey triple x (combo) in a music store the other day after a salesman talked it up a bit. I have to say that I kind of enjoyed playing thru it. Igave it about 15 minutes of knob turning and channel switching and got a bunch of cool sounds. It didn't strike me as the mesa knockoff I thought it was. has anyone else played one?

I tried it out a few months ago while I was browsing thru "Conglomerate Guitar Store". Seemed to be somewhat descent, but I was only able ot play with it at minimal volumes - like 1 1/2.

I hate when they won't let you crank it. How are you supposed to know how it sounds with the tubes cookin' ? I asked to take it into an iso room so that I could crank it, but the sales guy became squirmy...BASTARD.

At lower volumes it seemed cool. The 'XXX' changed colors with the channels. That was pleasing to the eye. The price was low to, for a brand new amp. It was only like $800 for the head...Seemed cool though.

The XXX is a good amp if your looking for something fairly loud with a lot of distortion thats all-tube and you haven't got the money for a Mesa. The range of sounds are pretty limited because at lower gain settings it sounds quite weak. On the other hand, it sounds pretty good with the gain cranked and the clean channel is great considering the fact that it's a high-gain amp. I really dislike the fact that they use cute little names for the controls rather than just saying what they do.

The bottom line: It's far from a Mesa but if you stand really far back and squint your eyes it sure looks like one.
