Blackbird inspired me to learn guitar, and was my first song (it took quite a while to perfect).

Kenny Loggin's House on Pooh Corner is also a favorite. I have to give props to Paul Simon on Anji though.

here comes the sun

it is the rebirth of george harrison, the phoneix from the ashes, a breath of fresh air through the halls of the beatles lennon-mccartney dominated catalogue .

im not saying that the lennon-mccartney songs were growing stagnate but, but this song was the perfect , it truely signafies the evoloution of the forgotton beatle.

1. Nirvana "Unplugged." Too many good tunes to just pick one.
2. Metallica et al covering "Tuesday's Gone" on "Garage, Inc."
3. Guns 'N Roses "Patience." (I actually have an import where the first half of the album they're playing an acoustic concert, the second half is like a jam session after a show during their tour for "Appetite." It's pretty good.)
4. "Weird Al" Yankovic "You Don't Love Me Anymore"--a stylistic parody of "More Than Words," which is a pretty good song in it's own right.
5. Billy Joel "Piano Man." Not a guitar song, but still great nonetheless.

I agree with Clifford - anything by Tenacious D kicks ass. Here are a couple of acoustic faves that fooled me at first:

Street Fighting Man

Jumping Jack Flash

Both are recordings of several acoustic guitars (multiple alternate tunings) with lots of microphone distortion to give the great beefy tone those tunes have.

Also, Dylan's open E and open D tuning stuff is really fun to play (most anything from Blood on the Tracks, for example...)

Some of Springsteen's early stuff is very cool acoustic work, both heavily strummed (Hard to Be a Saint in the City) and fingerpicked (Santa Anna).

Warren Zevon's "Life'll Kill Ya'" stuff

John Hiatt's "Crossing Muddy Waters" stuff

Ryan Adams' "You Will Always Be the Same"

on and on and on and on...

To both the dudes who listed "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?"
I have this to say . . .

hell yeah.

The first time i listened to that album straight through, I was left speechless. When Kurt finally stops holding back and screams the last verse, it's just gut-wrenching. One of the most emotive performances ever recorded.

"Fake Plastic Trees" is another fave of mine. I'm auditioning soon to become a licensed busker (one who sits and plays in the London underground stations for money) and that's my audition piece. I hope the audition is not early morning, b/c if so, I won't be in full voice and will be screwed. I used to sing tenor, but my vocal range has lowered a few half steps in the past two years.

Wow! Santa Ana. i thought I was the only one here who knew that one!

I'd like to add his new take on Born In the USA, played with a slide in open D5 tuning. Fantastic stuff. The starkness of it really gets the message across.

My favorite songs to play on acoustic are "The Rain Song" by Led Zeppelin and that song by The Doobie Brothers....""Old black water..Keep on rollin' Mississsippi moon wont ya keep on shinin' on me...."

To listen to........It has to be the acoustic version of Plush by Dean and Scott from STP and "Don't let me be lonely tonight" by James Taylor and also The ENTIRE "Sap" album by Alice in Chains. Excellent guitar and vocal work on that one. If you have not heard it....do so.

"Atlanta" - Stone Temple Pilots - anyone who hasn't heard this track should check it out. It's the closer for No 4 and it's simply incredible. Very nice, beautiful, and great to play

"No Excuses" - Alice in Chains - for some reason whenever i have an acoustic in my hands, at some point or another i have to play this progression, simple, but so good.

"Fearless" - Matthew Good Band - on the album it's played with a clean electric, but acousticly it sounds sounds incredible
