hey bass players:D

im a guitarist... me and the bass player in my band cant seem to figure out the effect in sir psycho sexy by the chilli peppers... the bass line does the weird synthy filtered sound... any idea what flea is doin here?

i really suck at picking out bass parts and effects... my brain wants to just hear guitar...

i just gave it another listen... i dont think its a phaser... listen to the verses... i think its an auto wah...

on a second listen it could be an envelope filter...I always play it with a phaser though....
yeah, its an envelope filter, somewhere around a medium rate with high sensitivity

wait, maybe there's some modulation on it, but the core of the effected bass part is an envelope filter. the part is doubled with a clean take too...

phaser is a possibility, also a EHX bass balls og some kinda filter (possibly a wah too)

is it not an EH Q-Tron? I know loads of funk players have used them for that kind of sound.

It's an Electro Harmonix Q Tron. You can see him switch it on in the live dvd.

When recording Sir Psycho Sexy, I am pretty sure that Flea used a DOD FX25 (the green, two knob one) that had a dying battery.

I still believe that he uses a bass balls pedal - this sound.......you just cant confuse it with anything else!!

Actually he currently uses a Q-Tron. But for the recording of that song he used the DOD pedal...

I know that he uses a Q-Tron for it now. When I saw them live (twice this past year) his set-up was a EHX Q-Tron>>MXR Micro Amp>>Boss ODB-3 Bass Overdrive. No wahs or phasers just that.

ummmm...The DOD pedal we've been talking about is an envelope filter..as far as I know, Flea has never owned a Bass Balls, and as I've already mentioned, he now uses a Q-Tron.
Flea def. used the DOD envelope back during the Blood Sugar Sex Magjik sessions
