POISON THE WELL
(from Guitar World 11-02)

Derek Miller:
ESP LTD series guitars
ESP Stephen Carpenter
Marshall JCM 800

Ryan Primack:
Hamer guitars ("the double cut-away models that are like old Les Paul Juniors")
Marshall JCM 2000

They also mentioned toying around with the Bogner Ecstasy a little.

Funny, I never thought of any of those bands as "Hardcore." I'm getting confused.

Um. . . anybody know what Minor Threat, Dead Kennedy's, or Grey Matter used? ;)

yea i know what you mean... i should call it metalcore or somethin else, but everyone is already callin it hardcore, so i might as well, even though there already is a hardcore... i dont know. **** it. those bands.

How about if we just stay away from using hardcore as a label? I think hardcore could possibly apply to any band.. the question is, hardcore relative to what?

sk8punck7976

exactly

I disagree.

Hardcore as a label for a punk subgenre dates back to the 1980's. It's only been in the past five years have I heard misguided youths applying it to what I've heard people call "Nu-metal." Thus I think the misguided youths are wrong and should be stopped.

Especially this kid (who posted this review of the Minutemen's "Double Nickles on the Dime" on Amazon):

PUNK?, April 25, 2000
Reviewer: kidpunkrock182 (see more about me) from LIMA OHIO
OK I JUST WANT 2 NO HOW THIS MUSIC IS SUPOSED 2 BE PUNK CUZ IT AINT. THERE ARE A LOT OF SONGZ ON HERE BUT THA PROBLEM IS THEY ALL SOUND THA SAME AND THEY AINT EVEN PUNK THEY SOUND LIKE ALTRENATIVE OR SOMETHING. THIS CD'S GOT MORE SONGS THAN ANY OTHER CD I OWN BUT I STILL CANT FIND 1 SONG I LIKE ON IT. IF U PPL THINK U CAN HANDLE TRU HARDCORE PUNK THEN CHECK OUT OLD KORN AND LIMP BIZKIT P.O.D. OR STAIND.

You know what, **** labels altogether. All it leads to is bigotry, as evidenced on this god damn board.

Yeah, I'm not gonna label anything anymore. Except food and television shows.

malcom

That' s absurd, you need labels to help describe things, but you also need a consensus on what qualifies as said label.

okay leaving all the label stuff out, does anyone know what any of the bands play out of?

I went to see Killswitch Engage a couple of months ago on their Roadrunner Roadrage Tour over here in Belgium, Europe.

If I remember correctly, both of the guitarist played Mesa Rectifiers. No idea about their guitars though. I'm more of a Bass Player anyway :)

Their Bass-rig:

> 2x Ampeg SVT-3 Pro Head (one might have been for backup), all bands used this head that night, so I have no idea if this is the standard amplifier for KsE's bassist. He's endorsed by Ampeg though (mind the Ampeg logo in the 'Alive or Just Breathing' CD...

> Ampeg Cabinet (can't remember if it was a 4x10, a 6x10 or a 8x10)... oooh my mind :)
> ProCo Rat Distortion pedal for the overdrive/distortion sound their bassplayer uses all the time (I love the sound of it very much).

i know you are joking, but i'm gonna answer this because they are great bands.

MT: Les Paul -> Marshall (that's "hardcore" enough)
DK: guitars that Jack White are making popular (like Nationals) and one of the best delay sounds i've ever heard... (echoplex? dmm? i don't know)

malcom

allmusic.com said he used an echoplex. Some guitar mag said he used a bassman head.

Atreyu's guitarist use the following:
guitarist 1 -
mesa duel rectifier or peavey 5150
mesa 4x12 straight rectifer cab with vintage 30s
esp viper guitar
Phaser, Volume pedal

guitarist 2 -
Les Paul Studio
5150 head with 5150 4x12 straight cab

Both guitarist use other gutiars sometimes, but from all the live videos ive seen one uses a viper and the other a les paul.

Atreyu is my fav band so I have to know these things.

youre exactly right on atreyu... as for avenged, bogner uberschalls, parker flys, and carvin single cutaways... eighteen visions has 5150s and fernandezes tuned to drop B... and i saw FATA with an epiphone sg... and a gibson black les paul custom, and i know their bassist has a music man, and i guess he forgets that he does not have a wireless. there should be a rule against crowd surfing while plugged in. hmmm and i think thats al i know.

Hardcore was relevant from around 1979-1989. After that, good stuff has been few and far between.

For those not in the know:
Cro-Mags - Age of Quarrel/Best Wishes
Sick of It All - everything
Black Flag - everything
Bad Brains - everything
Murphys Law - Murphy's Law/Back with a Bong
Leeway - Born to Expire - Desperate Measures
Warzone - Everything
Sheer Terror - Everything
Dead Kennedys - everything
Misfits - Earth AD (the only "hardcore" record they put out ,otherwise, everything)
Breakdown - 1987 demo, plus/minus, blacklisted, battle hymns for an angry planet

the list goes on and on as far as the classics, but I'm leaving work now.

I dont understand why people dont't just answer the question asked in the post. Everytime someone writes hardcore, metal or punk in a post 50 people race out to say whats hardcore and whats not. Both sides always think they are correct and we end up with 50 threads that have absolutely nothing to do with the title. Why not spend as much time resarching the question at hand as you do your rebuttle. I mean absolutely nothing personal to howitzer, I am just sick of rediculous pissing competions that will never be settled. Sorry for the bitterness
