Since early morning Sunday, Feb. 29th, the site and boards have been incredibly sluggish and downright unusable. Our server load peaked above 50, which is 25-times its average daily load. We've located the problem and are happy to report that the server should be much more stable now.
The problem: The session-handling script on the main site (not chat) was having problems updating the database due to heavy load, which compounded the problem exponentially. Since this site relies so heavily on the database server, every single http request to the server took a long time to process (and would often timeout).
The fix: We have disabled session support on the main site for the time being.
