View Full Version : Jeff Buckley's rig
sleight of hand

Does anybody know what Jeff Buckley used to play?
Well, in the live DVD that I have, he was using Mesa/Boogie amps with what looks like a midi-verb. It's been a while since I've watched the DVD so I'm not sure which model mesa he was using. He was playing a telecaster with what seemed to be Joe Barden pickups (the bridge p'up anyway). He also used a Rickenbacker 360-12 on "Last Kiss Goodbye". His acoustic was a Guild (not sure of the model).
BTW, it's nice to see someone else who's into Buckley. He's one of the greatest songwriters of our time and he deserves more recognition.

he also used a gibson black les paul custom. in the "grace" video there's a fender combo amp, it looked like a twin reverb. I heard in some song a rat, used with loads of fuzz, only to get crazy feedback and noises. of course, the man was very musical even with a rat...

Thanks for the help so far, guy's. It's also pleasing to see some fellow Buckley fans out there. He was definitely a great guitarist as well as a genius singer/songwriter.

He also used a Alesis Quadraverb.

I forgot about the LP Custom. Also, on the DVD, I noticed a Fender Jaguar setting off to the side...maybe for a back-up. He never picked it up though.
The Quadraverb is probably what I noticed setting on top of his amp rather than a midi-verb.
He also did some amazing things by making his acoustic feed back. I seem to recall a Fender acoustic amp as well.
ive seen him using a ric. with fender vibrolux's

Do any of you know what he used for the recording of the song Hallelujah? Cause I love just how clean and deep and yeah his guitar sounds awesome on that song any help would be appriciated.
I think the fender jaguar was Mike Tighe's.
reptilzar was right about amps, etc.
not 100% sure about the pedals he used.

There was a very brief article about him in Guitar One a while back, it mentioned him using MESA amps, a Boss Hyperfuzz, and an Ibanez 'surf model'. I assume that's a Talman, but I could be wrong.
Damn! I was aboot to say that!
Didn't the article also mention a DOD Buzz Box?

Mesas used mostly for roadwork, Grace Albumn mostly Vibroverb and Telecaster, Vibroverb and Les Paul on Mojo Pin and Dreambother recordings. Telecaster capoed at fifth fret into Vibrolux with Qverb (hall setting i suspect) for Halleleughiah (mangled that one) to whomever asked.
with a little tweaking, a Fender Hot Rod Deville, a Tele, and an alesis Qverb or MidiVerb reverb will get you in the ballpark
also dig seeing the Buckley love being spread.

Yeah, I think it did. There were a few other guitars and stuff mentioned in the article, but they had all been brought up before in this thread. Forgot the Buzz Box, though. Good eye.

i think it's just a tele and a dead clean fender amp. possibly a twin reverb. and the amp is mic'ed up really really well.

His other guitarist, Michael Tighe I think is his name uses it on a couple songs because he broke a string on his tele

I'd go buy "Grace" first. Good intro to him...
I really like what Buckley did as a guitar player... got a pretty cool style. Unique but accessible.
Anyone ever heard his dad, Tim?
In some ways I like Tim Buckley better than Jeff.... . . . . .
-k.

I'm going to revive a very old thread here but do you all know if the Vibroverb is what he used in Live at Shin-e? It's brown so i wasn't sure. Great sound, doesn't appear as though he's using any effects in the pictures. Correct me if i'm wrong.
i read somewhere he was indeed using the vibroverb and his borrowed tele for the sin-e recordings, not sure if he used the alesis quadraverb, i think he may have but i'm not 100% sure... sounds amazing though. the tele's also tuned down half a step, in case you're wondering...
"Digitch Whammy II with Microphones" (from that site)
Does anyone know more about this?

It's possible that he did it while recording demos for "My Sweetheart the Drunk". I don't think there's anything like that on Grace.
I also sincerely doubt he needed such things, since he was already sporting four octaves.

Maybe he just cheated and only had a two octave range and used the whammy to add an other two;) .

I think it may be for the noises at the beginning of grace and such just before the guitar comes in on mojo pin, don't you think?
