I was thinking about getting a distortion or overdrive pedal, and I've narrowed it down to the Ibanez PD7 Phat Hed or the Boss ODB3 Overdrive.
I haven't been able to find either pedal to try out, so I was hoping for some opinions on those pedals or suggestions on other ones.

well, what are you looking for? Overdrive or distortion?
For overdrive, you're going beteween boss Superoverdrive, and Ibanez TS-9 Tubescreamer. Both are classic pedals and will serve you nicely. The Super Overdrive is more saturated, but it's not distorted. It sounds fantastic on Hollowbodies. The TS-9 is great for getting a dirty sound without coloration to your clean signal...
TS-9 Transparent Dirt (compared to the Boss)
Superoverdrive Growly Gain.
Personally< I use both.
Boss also makes a blues driver which I've not heard. I'm just pointing out the legends. Lots of people use the Ibanez and boss> U2 for example.
For distortion, there are a million options.

I'm not totally sure - I'm hoping for something that'll give me a nice metal distortion/overdrive, because I've started to play in a thrash metal band, playing the earlier Metallica, Slayer and such. I think it'd be handy to get an overdrive/distortion pedal.
Thanks for your help:)

nothing i mentioned would be what you want. OVerdrive is soft, distortion is harder and more 'fuzzy'.
Unless you're talking about AC/DC type metal, i dont' thin kwhat I told you is suitable.
Try boss Metalzone 2, or Digitechs new metal pedal. BOth are pretty solid.
Ibanez isn't really famed for metal pedals.
If you use those overdrive pedals playing thrash, you'll sound like B.B. King on ritalin.

lol, alright. I had the Ibanez recommended by some guy in the store, but I wasn't sure. Thanks again.

Dude, get a Rocktron Rampage. The best hard rock pedal Iv'e ever used.

I'll read up on that Rocktron and check around my local stores to see if they have one to try.
While I was at the guitarists yesterday though, I did spot and borrow his Boss HM2 distortion pedal, and that's got a pretty sweet sound. I've just got to convince him that selling it to me is a good thing, lol.

my two cents:
stick to dedicated bass-overdrive/distortion pedals.
guitarpedals (like the MT-2, Rat's, SuperOverdrive, ...) will suck out a lot of low end out of your sound... believe me.
my recommendations:
- EBS MultiDrive (tons of low end and very good, warm and versatile overdrive sounds)
if you want a boss: Boss ODB-3

My4 cents
Depends on what kind of distortion I am looking for, for a heavey Gain and well eqed distortion I would go with the Boss MT-2 and for milder distortion more bluesy sound not a whole lot of distortion (Hell I just use it now for more of a quick volume booste due to me having a GT-6) I would go with the Boss Blues Driver.........Either way I'd go with boss I love Iabenez guitars but I love Boss effects.

Yeah, I can see what your saying, but when I tried his HM2, it didn't suck any of my bottom end out. I'm not sure if it'll make a lot of difference - the preamp on my active stock p'up is a little powerful.

i think basses sound way better clean, unless its the main instrument playing. otherwise it just loses its punch.

Hmm, maybe, but you can't always have clean if you're playing thrash. It's nice to have the distortion.
the basisst in ym band has the ibanez pd-7 after being unimpressed with the boss
im a guitarist and know more about stuff than him. he hasa big fender amp and ibanez bass, but distortion alone sounds ****. needs a decent EQ and enhancer to get a really nice distorted tone.

Ive tried many overdrive/distortion pedals in my time and i can vouch that the phat head does produce a sweet sound with a good EQ. Where in essex you from rents?:D

i'd imagine that distortion would be good in thrahs. but if oyu still want definition of your sound and not just another part of a cloud of noise then don't use any effect but make you amp overdrive.
invest in a powerful and reliable preamp and power amp, and mix and match brands.
vacuum tube poweramps are good, but IMO tubes + transisters have the best color to them.

I finally got around to trying out, then purchasing the Ibanez. I absolutely love the pedal, it's got everything I wanted from a distortion pedal. I can pull out something that sounds like Cliff Burton's distorted tone, but then I can go get some real bottomed out sounds too. It's amazing. I can't wait to try it with my Ashdown electric blue 1x15 combo when that comes next week. Should be sweet.

i dont like bass distortion either, but i think its great that this guy is using distortion...if thats the sound he is going for...repect it. tone is a bassist's signature.

lol, thanks. I don't actually use the Overdrive much, not since I got the new amp and instantly fell in love with that tone. I only really distort things when I need that little extra boost in places, for the occasional lead and other such nonsense. I don't want many effects, I don't see the need.
