Hey! I need to learn to jump any play at the same time! The only time I can is at the end of Burn Baby Burn by Ash when the last E5 is played. Any tips or techniques on jumping?

WHen you are in the middle of a finger-tapping solo, you can jump up into the air, do a flip while kicking your legs out and then land in the splits. Make sure it's when the pyro explodes, though, or you'll miss your cue. That would SURELY increase the musicality of your technique. The music will sound better, even on the CD if you do this.

Did i hear a sense of sarcasm in that? Why do you have to jump. Its good for stage presense but if your doing it on purpouse and it just doesnt happen and doesnt look natural then dont do it. It makes you look stupid. ive seen plenty of bands that jump on cue and i just laugh. It must be natural and not always is jumping the coolest thing to do. look at hendrix he made it look like he was making love to the guitar. that was the most amazing thing ive ever seen. so much more love in that than a stupid jump.

steve vai fell flat on his ass while walking backwards with a triple neck guitar... does that count as a jump?

heres how my band is doing it. we're kinda choreographing our stage act, but were not gunna do it normally.were only gunna ue the choreography for places where it counts (battle of the bands type things), just cause its not the usual crowd we play for. but normally, were leaving that stuff out. i cant believe they told us they were gunna judge partly on that. they shouldnt be. one band agreed with it, so they ay that its unfair or something if they leave it out. but yea its like 1/5th of the judging. kinda sucks

You can always look into the archives of Poison, Cinderella, and Kiss for ulitimate lessons in rock show choreography.
Personally, I think the "jump shot" is used waaaay to much. Just be in tune, in time, and play your instrument the best you can.
Or, you could go the route of Milli Vanilli and all of those other "great" pop acts - just fake it to prerecorded tracks and get serious with the dance steps.

ok ur crossin the line with the whole prerecorded thing.
lol.
i saw a band that did one of the coolst tricks i have ever seen at a show at a coffe shop
they had the guitars d-tuned, and one guy was right handed and on guy was a lefty, they stood next to each other, necks pointing towards each other and started playing the other persons guitar with their neck hand, and their own with their strumming hand.
thats something you just cant really practice alone...
i hope they never play naked.
i feel sorry for those who were with me, they went to the bathroom just before it happened and came back just after it ended:(
you all need to quit worrying about choreography and watch the ****ing fugazi 'instrument' video...

LOL at this "battle the bands" contest i was playing in a Pink Floyd project and i played the distorted guitar and i was borrowing a guitar and the guy who owned it had just changed the low Estring and i took a jump and suddenly the E string was incredible untuned and everything i played sounded *****\MUD but the good thing was that we managed to win :D

what a silly silly thread.

...this thread is f'kin ridiculous. Talk about a lack of soul, choreographed stage moves... anyways.
Want to learn how to jump? Go to a Dillinger Escape Plan show. Watch the show, pick your radio-lovin' jaw up off the ground, and check your pants to make sure you still have nuts. Then do what the guitar players in Dillinger do. Or just quit the guitar and play a melodica. (The original instrument of ROCK)

Ditto Wizard... I can't believe this thread is even taking place. Heres a tip... don't jump, I've never seen it look good and more than likely it will end with a broken ass bone and a broken ego. My other guitar player used my stratocaster for one show and decided to jump... he fell flat on his face and flat ON MY STRAT! I stopped playing and ran to my guitar, and I almost killed him. To this day my friends said they have never seen me more mad. So take this into account... if your'e just doing it to look cool, what happens if you fall? You look like a retard, thats what... and you'll most likely look like a retard if you land safely.
I agree with the don't jump side of the argument.
Truthfully, the only guy I ever saw jump and look really cool doing it was Pete Townshend -- everybody else is so far away from his leaping in my book that it's pretty pointless. It's like smashing equipment -- not that most of us can aford to anyway -- what's the point anymore?
Jumping maybe like on a few final, power chords at the end of a song -- yeah that's prolly ok. But work on chops; that's what it's about more than jumping certainly.
If you want to see the final word in jumping, sliding across stage, and all, watch the version of 'Won't Get Fooled Again' from the movie 'The Kids Are Alright' -- Seriously, if you can't do better than Townshend does here, forget about it. Learn better chops instead.
(I mean this in a positive way so I hope it sounds that way -- not like an old man talking down to some kids which is not how i mean it at all -- k? -- cool :) )

I thought this thread was about "string jumping" or "interval jumping."
My band used to practice beneath a "rap"/nu metal outfit. Part of their "practice" regimen was jumping up and down while running their songs. Annoying as hell. I never knew vertical jumps were a part of guitar technique--but maybe I'm just old-fashioned or something......I suppose I'll take my sweep picking elsewhere.

hey flea from rhcp looks really cool when he jumps....
yes reptilzar!!! you f'in rock man. the dillinger escape plan is totally amazing, and by the way, i think i'm one of about 2 people that get your signature. speaking of at the drive-in, why don't you get your hands on one of their videos (you won't find that at a wal-mart) and then you'll see how to f'n rock out at a show. pure heart, that's all it takes man, forget what other people think when you are playing. just go balls out, that rocks so much. forget all that choreographed stuff, it's no good and you'll be kicking yourself in about 4 years once you start to LISTEN to music.

Pete townshend and Matt Bellamy (MUSE) look damn cool when they jump! specially Matt in the live @ zenith, paris DVD!
Thats because matt belamy is one of those little people who learn to bounce when you knock them over.
Seriously When I saw them live my first thought was "Jesus the bassist is a giant" but matt is MINISCULE, watch the end of the dvd when he gets on the bassists back.
I thik jumping can be kind of cool but its all part of getting into the music. Like when you see pop stars doing pre rehersed dance routines, Theres nothing wrong with dancing but having it all thought out beforehand sucks the soul from it a little

oh yeah, forgot about flea -- yeah he jumps good :D
pre-empted jumpin looks so pathetic, one guy from my school was performing in front of the whole school (1000+ people) and started jumping. straight up and down, no moving about or anything it was so gay, the whole school was laughing at him and then he stopped and looked down at his guitar for the whole song, god damn it was funny. so yeah don't pre-empt jumping, just rock out and make ***** up on the spot

Bah... it looks cooler to do the wide legs groove thing anyway. The thing that pretty much anyone that's anything good does...
No ones actually told the poor kid how to jump yet though.
It may be something you grow out of but anyone whos ever done the tennis racket in front of the mirror thing knows that posing is part of the fun of having a guitar. I went through a period back when I just graduated from tennis racketdom when I thought the only reason to get better was so you could pose and play at the same time. I'm older and better now but I still get the urge to jump into a meaty power chord just like I get the urge to dance to a good beat, Why hold back?
Heres what I learned:
Push your left arm out to the side bringing the guitar around to the right of your body and pointing the neck upwards. This makes way for your legs
Use your picking arm to hold the guitar close to your body otherwise it will smack you in the ribs on the landing.
Dont try to be a space cadet, No one is going to be impressed by how high you go, just get it right.
Screw up your body on the jump, knees up.
Jump BEFORE you play, Preferebly into a power chord. Dont try it while doing anything too complex or you'll screw up.
The landing is more important than the jump, do it on the beat
Strike the chord, Bring your left arm back down with hammer-anvil time precision and spread your legs a little using your knees to bounce and cuchion the force, WHAM. Dont tell me that dosnt feel good.

Nicely put. But as a lot of these guys have said, just be true to your emotions while you're playing. Dont try and rock out just because you want to look cool or whatever other superficial motive you may have. I know when i move with the music its fun, but if all im thinkin about at the time is how much i have to go pee and how boring this audience is I wont fake it. Stage-presence is key, but be spontaneous, otherwise you'll just be going off a list of "cool things to do" and you'll run out fast. You can do anything on stage, no one will stop you (unless if you look like this guy: )

GOOD CALL! I've seen that thing sooo many time, it NEVER gets boring. Every show is completely unscripted but they are so captivating live. Amazing band!
By the way, to the dude whos band are going to conform for a battle of the bands. Just go along do your thing, make the other 4 catagories perfect and blow them away!
Once I seen that picture of Kurt Cobain playing his guitar while standing on his head and wasted many weeks trying to figure out how to do it.
Anyways, I still cant play well without looking at the fretboard 90% of the time.

you can always practice in the dark, with the lights off. that helped me out a lot...
jack black says it best: "I just try to move with the music and become one with the rock. The moment you start analyzing your own rock is the moment your rock is dead. That’s why rock is now pretty much dead. Too much analyzation. No rockalyzation!"

Dude, that guy rocks !
Basically, my response to the original post is that if you like what your playing enough that it makes you jump, you will. Theres no technique to it it just happens. Your body responds to the music your making, heres a cliche example; Darryl Palumbo from Glassjaw, he does some weird stuff on stage cause thats what his music makes him want to do.
Oh and choreographing your show for a battle of the bands, bad plan. I'd stay away from BOB's in general. I know its really tempting when your young and they tempt you with free **** if you win but its really not as satisfying as a real show (trust me, I was there. I've been playing in bands since i was 14 and I did my share of BOBs).
Oh and practicing in the dark makes your stage playing ability way better. Same with practicing in a really really hot room.
