View Full Version : Sustained Chords
Hi,
I'm interested in creating long sustained chords to play over, similar to the technique Dave Gilmour uses on his live DVD.
He uses a volume pedal to fade into a huge gliss patch to sustain a chord for him to solo over.
I'm interested in doing the same, was thinking of splitting my signal between a POD for long patches and my pedals/amp for the "normal" tone.
What FX do I need for creating the long sustained notes? I guess compressor, reverb/delay, chorus to suit?
Any advice on settings etc, I can tweak to suit but thought I'd ask the experts (ie Fiveways, Nobody) first.
Cheers,

I have found a way to do this, using max reverb and tweaking the delay to feedback on itself before slowly fading out. I can then use the POD floorboard to fade the sound in using the built in vol pedal.
Anyone else do this type of thing? If so, how do YOU do it?(!!).
Cheers,
(For info I discovered that DG uses a Korg SDE3000 to create a similar effect. Does the Korg have a loop or hold function built in?).

OH!!!
Here, I have the interview....
If you mean the "Shine on you crazy diamond" bit, it's not a Korg, in Guitar player he says a Roland SDD3000, which makes alot more sense. the korg has a really limited delay time(about a second), the roland has 4.5 seconds of delay and hold on it.
The Korg SDE2000 has 4.5 seconds of delays as well, and does holds.
basically, you need a delay with more time and a hold(the digitech digidelay does both(4 seconds) and is cheap:))
Oops, sorry Fiveways, I think I meant the Roland SDD3000, the Korg SDE3000 is what the Edge uses, thanks for clearing that up.
What's the digidelay like, have you played one?
Thanks for the reply, I'm getting into looping and space more and more after reading your Ambience thread (amazing, thanks for writing that) and looking at the Loopers Delight website.
I'd like to ask some advice on pedal loopers sometime, if you don't mind answering a "looper newbie's" questions?
Thanks again mate,

Thanks again mate,
I like the digidelay a lot, it a good delay, with a decent amount of time. I usually suggest it for people getting into looping or heavier delay use because of:
Cost
Features
The fact it does both hold delay and sampling(not amazing, but 4 second is a awesome start)
With a DD-3 and a Pod it is quite the weapon. And it will be more then enough to cover the basic holds that he uses(if you don;t mind bending over).
Thanks for the comment on the ambient guide. I still plan to add more as stuff comes out. when I get my magic stomp, you better believe there will be a huge amount about it going in there.
And on loopers, ask away, here is fine as this fourm is usually deader then dead.
And I have a question for you....does the pods delay pitchshift at all when you adjust it in realtime? I am getting one soon(trade for) and am trying to find a answer to this question....
Thanks Fiveways, the Digidelay does look good, I may try and have a play with one (if I can find a local store with one in stock!).
The magic stomp does look a nice peice of kit, I have coverted one myself. Again, finding somewhere local with one in stock...
I have answered your POD question in the other thread (I think, if not I meant to!). The POD doesn't pitch shift, but it does have some glitches when you tweak in realtime, you can get some pops when you tweak the repeats from high to low. It really depends if you use any other features at the same time, if you only use delay then switch off the amp/cabinet sim and turn the verb down/off to to conserve processor power.
I really recommend getting the floorboard for the POD, opens it up so much I use it alone instead of an amp/pedals setup as you can swap patches or enter into FX mode and turn on/off FX, verb, delay (even if using another effect), add EQ boost, solo boost, plus you have wah and volume pedals built in (pre delay/verb so you can fade out and leave the sound hanging).
You can also tweak the patches/wah etc via the Sound Diver software on your PC/MAC.
What version POD are you getting?
I may start another thread on loopers, thanks for the offer of assistance, very kind mate.
Cheers,

Ahh ****, it was you who answered it! I forgot(it's really late in the day for me as I am a usless nightowl).
And it is a 2.0. I am looking fowrad to time with it. I have a midi controler I might use....really, I might just get the 4 button switch, as I usually find a good basic tone and just stay there, and do everything with my pedals.
No worries, hope that helped.
It is a great peice of kit, although I found mine worked better with my strat after I swapped to EMG pickups, the stock items sounded dire. My SG with alnico PAF's sounded sweet to.
The 4 button is good, but for flexability and tweakability the floorboard is excellent.
A good tip I found was to use a MIDI board to change patches and use the floorboard to turn FX on/off, best of both worlds.
Mine is a 2.0, wasn't sold on the XT.
Cheers,
Fiveways,
Another quick POD tip I have been playing with today, try running the POD in parralell with your usual guitar rig.
I split my signal via a TU2, one side into a BD2 and DM3 into an amp, the other into the POD into a Laney powered monitor (clean PA like power) with the floorboard for control.
Using this rig I can have my stock tone then fade in the sustained chords via the POD floorboard to solo over the sustained chords, plus I can have a stock clean tone then fade in an effected POD tone alongside. You can get some nice sounds running a clean delay alongside a clean chorus/tremolo tone from the POD.
Really cool options, and controlable via the floorboards volume.
Cheers,
By the way, downloaded a few of your songs last night, very inspirational, how do you get the synth like tones on failed transmission??
Hewesy.
i have a Boss DD3 wich has a hold mode that keeps the thing you were playing when you stepped on it sounding for ever
and i think there is another boss pedal that does that, an orange one, i just cant remember the name right now

Thanks for all the POD advice. I can't wait to get this thing.
And the synth sound is probably a PS-3, a Korg DRV-1000 reverb, A DM-2, a DL4 on the autofade, and maybe another digital delay....I am not sure if it is a PB&J or a DD-3. I really can't remember as I haven;t slept in 36 hours:(
No problem, thanks for all the Ambience advice.
The POD is great, the more time I spend playing with it the more I find it can do.
The amp sims are very good, at least you'll have an open mind about it as apposed to those guys who need the smell the hot valves...
So it was a PS and a delay giving the synth tone? Wow, very cool. What do you use the Boss Synth pedal for??
Ojela, thanks for the Boss tip, I have played with the DD3's hold function but I tend to leave that set to a longish delay, cool function though.

The bass synth was more used on older stuff. I use Mode 9 with a octave pedal for bass type stuff. I think in my mp3 dumper there is it's on "track 7" but I might be wrong.
What do you use to record your tunes Fiveways?
The Bass Synth looks a cool pedal, tempted to get one to play with, using my girlfriends Fender Bass.
I'll check out track 7 at home, can't wait to post some of my own stuff (if I ever get the confidence...!).
