CRAP.
Well, if you want a traditional vocoder sound. You can get away with it but you need hella effects(I used to use a boss bass synth and a PS-3, plus a phaser and a delay to get a OK vocoder sound).

so it wouldn't be good for creating synth sounds with guitar, would it? thanks for answers!

Complete crap man. I have the Metavox, and in theory thought it would sound like crap. So I tried it, and it was worse than I imagined. Think of a bunch of white noise over your signal... unusable white noise... and there you have it.

Hey Guys,
I've got a Boss SE-70 that's got a vocoder in it. Not midi controlled but audio controlled. The program includes overdrive/chorus (that I don't use) and the delay (that I DO use).
So the carrier and the source are both audio signals.
When I plug my guitar only the mono input of the SE-70 the guitar is both the carrier AND the source. In other words : the pitch is what I play on the guitar, the sound is the vocoder itself.
I love this sound. It is like a growl with overdrive. Very cool sound for solos or riffs.
I also use the same effects with my bass, which sounds very agressive but still musical (usable!).
(I don't have sound examples online, sorry).
Regards,
Martijn
