why did you take it out?

my rack has been reduced to a piddly little 2 space now that ive sold my gMaj. DTR-2000 and sennheiser wireless. hopefully il fill the gap with a powerconditioner if i can get my friend to bring one back that does 240v. so yeah. 2 space, not much point posting a pic of that.

I sold it on Ebay. I'm looking into a TC Fireworx and a GCX switching system now.

lennynero, is that a custom power unit at the bottom? im looking into building something similar to get midi and input/outputs all in one spot.

Well, even if 'power unit' is exagerated... yes. It powers all devices in the rack, and puts together the MIDI-Signal and9V DC for my MIDI Board.

Right now I am working on a MKII version, that puts the MIDI-Jacks to the front.

if you run it through a stereo cab or bridged, it will run 40 watts. so it should be about the same as an HRD, except with EL84's and in stereo if you wanted.

tak

bridged?

like mono?

so like ADA mp-1 into that can do 40 watts with one regular say 2x12 cab?

Nice Rigs Guys

I like this thread.

Here (http://home.cogeco.ca/~screamingdaisy/New_Folder/Apr21_03%201.jpg)

I'm still awaiting the arrival of a Lexicon MPX G2.

I also have a MPX R1 midi controller (not shown) for the G2.

And I need to buy a transit case. It'll look the same as Beerski's as I'm buying it from the same guy.

Well, the MArshall 20/20 will not give you 40 Watts mono, no bridged option built in.

But aside: yes, it is as loud as a 40 Watt Amp.

i could make a compilation approximating what it would look like using pics from other racks. that sounds like a project. id like to see some pics of that rack.

it's an SKB roto rack, the cheaper line of SKB's. It's made of hard plastic. I really like it and all, but i think an anvil style case would offer a little better protection.

I think i might get a carvin roadwarrior case, anvil style, not shock mount, but i'm not exactly throwing my gear around.

I might see if i can round up a digital camera somewhere and see if i can get some pictures. Rack stuff is just so cool to look at, good thread.

those would fit my needs wonderfully. i dont play out much. and i wont have a power amp in there either, so its not a problem.

I do...

It's just so cool, how many different ways everything can be hooked up and whatnot. Plus, the gear just looks badass. That's why I have my GSP-2101 set up right next to my bed, so it's the first thing I see when I wake up in the morning.

I've been looking around and he seems to have the best prices around, particularily for a metal edged ATA transit case. Also, he'll do custom work if you need it.

When I'm all done I'll have 8U filled. I'll probably end up buying a 12U or 16U as I'd rather have too much than not enough.

Plus, I'm already thinking about a switcher and shelf for my pedals, so there's another 3-4U filled up.

Im glad to see some appreciation of rack gear on GG! Iv been convined for a while now the ultimate set up is a few choice pedals with rack dealing with other duties.

On a slight tangent I just have to say I played the TC D-two delay unit the other week and it produces the sweetest delay sounds iv ever heard. I would love one of these!

I don't think I've ever seen a seller with over 900 positives and 0 neg.

I emailed him a couple of times about having a custom sized case for my guitar and pedalboard. He was polite and quick to respond. Next time I'm go overseas, I'm not leaving my guitar behind again, and I'm not trusting my beloved axe on an Army cargo plane inside a regular hardcase...

Here is my current rack rig. It's kind of a hybrid setup, since I'm using an amp too. I've been experimenting with blended tones a lot. Using different amounts and types of clean/gain/effects but running the rack and the amp at the same time.

http://www.dissonant.org/~owend/studio/rig1.JPG

The rack is:

conditioner
triaxis
g-force (triaxis)
g-major (vht)
gcx
mosvalve power amp

Yeah, the ground control switches everything, including the VHT head. I have an access-electronics box that handles the switching which is not visible in that picture.

I don't have a band at the moment. Originally I WAS going to name a band dissonant (or dissonance, but that was taken). And then I never got the band together. :)

So instead of letting the domain name just lapse, I just use it to hang other things on. I am running a bunch of web sites for friends, etc. There's about 40 of them now.

It is an 8 space rack. It's pretty big. I usually like to use a 4 space rack if I actually have to leave the house. :) This one is pretty deep, and the bigger ones tend to get very front heavy if you load a lot of stuff in them.

Just about any rack space device will only use 4 screws, 2 on the top and 2 on the bottom, whether it is 1 or 2 (or more) spaces high. They just put the holes in the right spaces and it will line up just fine.

I have seen some rack devices that don't line up properly, so they leave extra gaps at the top and bottom. I have a 2 space VHT pre-amp that actually takes up 3 spaces because of that. I guess they did it that way to make sure it doesn't overheat because it has other things too close to it.

what would you recomend to go with what I have already. I want to be able to get a throaty roar, a tight mids dipped, rectifier style distortion and mega mids boosted saturated overdrive for soloing as well as a pristine clean channel. Not asking for TOO much i know lol.

The EL34s are the start for it, i like the way they accentuate the mids, suits my style more too. I dont want to get a JMP 1 because I dont want to be limited to the marshall sound, I dont want to get the ada mp1 because it seems that although it does good hair metal and has a nice solid state clean, it doesnt do a lot else. Also, the engl 580 looks fantastic, style especially, I cant find any sound clips that dont sound like someone like me recorded them with a cheap mic in their bedroom.

Well, start saving up now! Expect some rediculous price tag on that thing (I wouldn't be suprised at $2,000+)

Cool setup you have going there, I like the poweramp.

What about a Mesa Rectifier Recording preamp? I'm not sure if you want to spend that much money (probably around $1,000) but you mentioned the Triaxis, and that's more expensive.

if you dont need programs, and are fine with a multi-channel, all-tube preamp, id suggest the Mesa Quad. it owns. four channels, 2 separate graphic eq's. there are ways of rigging it up to switch with midi, but you have to buy some specialized gear for that purpose.

the Triaxis should cover it all, and you have a great number of patches that you can program.

i dont know anything about the Engl.

i know im forgetting a lot of preamps, im just drawing blank. my mind is shut off for summer.

Im in the UK, i could get it for cheaper, the vh4 isnt a whole lot more expensive than the dual rec if you know where to shop.

Damn, lucky you. :D I'd love to get a VH4 for the price of a Dual Recto.

Also, the Quad preamp, what Jimbo suggested, is a great preamp. It's designed after the Mesa Mark IIC+ and Mark III preamps. Each channel is a different preamp, each with a lead function. Though, they are discontinued and hard to find.

Its not a fantastic thing, the dual recs are about £2000, maybe a bit cheaper, VH4s are about £2500, if you get a good deal again. The only official supplier wants £3000 for them but thats over the website, ive heard claims of a vh4 for £2000 but i dont believe that. The H&K triamp mark 2 is approx £2000.

Quad preamp sounds good, thats based on the mark II and mark III isnt it? Only problem is that im in the UK. Mesa stuff is hard to find here, ive been in 2 shops that have them. Obviously I cant ship from the states due to postage and power supplies. The Quad does look like a good system though.

Why thank you sir. :)

I was too lazy to put in the guitar this time around. I've been playing some different ones, and changed my plans a bit. I'll still have an Ibanez 7-string in there somewhere, it would be cool to snag an S series... if only they weren't discontinued... I'd also still have an ESP 6-string, not sure if I still want to go with and SRC model *shrug*

But at least I figured out a way to put the GRX4 to good use :D

If you have some time, check the forums at www.hugeracksinc.com I've seen a few offers for Quad preamps floating around, not sure if there are any current ones, though. You just might find one (I was offered a Bogner Fish preamp  never thought I'd have a chance to buy one... too bad I'm broke)

im not completely clear on the signal path you are after involving the grx.

also, wouldn't you want to put the buffer on the board to protect the signal from degradation?

The two outputs of the Quad go to the GRX4. One of those signals goes into the "IN A" of the GRX4, and procedes to go through the 3 loops which loop to the Boss, Moog, and then finally to the GSP-2101 where it goes straight to the line mixer in stereo (I was too lazy to show that it was a stereo signal out from the GSP-2101).

The second output of the Quad goes into the "IN B" of the GRX4, and then is sent through the 'send' of loop #4 to the mixer as my dry signal. The mixer than mixes together the wet and dry signals.

The reason for having the dry signal go through the GRX4's 4th loop, is so that I man mute it if I feel the need to just use my wet signal. (Damn... I must owe Maarten a substantial amount of money, I keep taking his brilliant ideas :D

Yet another thing I was too lazy to do. I understand what you mean. I was doing this rig during finals week, in between studying and whatnot, so I just became sick of doing it that I just felt it was acceptable and declared it finshed. God I'm lazy.

There is someone on Harmony Central selling a Quad for £400 (or thereabouts) I don't know if he still has it, but if he does, he's been trying to sell it for quite a while so he may cut you a deal on it. I can get you in touch with him if you want...

Sure, the koch won't be going anywere soon...
The Rivera basically has two clean/od channels while the Koch has that plus insane amounts of hi gain so they compliment eachother nicely.
I really like running the Koch's preamp through the Rivera's poweramp but it's a bit too much to be lugging around to gigs all the time.
Untill the Rivera get's retubed I'm still using the Koch as my main amp.

So, why can't you use the other side? The Only difference is that the strat 500 shares the same power suppy, so you can still use both sides. You just can't have one channel on half drive and the other on full.....

It's not 2 separate power amps so the tubes stay heated at all times.(The really old Mesa tubes are in the other side.) I want another power amp for backup that isn't always using the tubes. I'm thinking about a 20/20 since it's 1 space so i can get a switching system and another preamp. Not sure yet.

Alright i gotcha now, you didn't say you were going to use the other one for back up. But that does make sense.

Anyway go for a older 50/50, they're going for cheap now anyways. And you can switch it down to 15 watts.

Furman Power Conditioner
Rane SM26 Line Mixer
Korg DTR-1000 Tuner
Mesa Boogie Triaxis
Mesa Simul Class 2:90
Eventide GTR4000 Ultra Harmonizer

The remaining two spaces are going to be filled with a power amp/cabinet simulator (for playing small gigs and at church, and as backup for the 2:90) and the final space would go to a wireless unit, or maybe another effects processor, I haven't really decided at this point. Absent from the picture is a 1960A Marshall 4x12, but you all know what those look like :)

I actually just got the SM26 yesterday, so I haven't configured it with everything else yet. Just going to use it in order to keep my signal pure when I'm not running it through extraneous stuff, and to make sure that when I do have the extra stuff on, that it's mixed in to my liking...:)

Nocluejimbo,

I just posted pictures of my rig (with rack) online. It'd be great if you got my rack picture up, even though its not that great right now...

Very nice, how's the 5150? I'm considering getting one.

For the longest time, I looked at the 5150 like a filler. I got it because it was substantially cheaper than a Dual Rectifier. At the time, my band was playing big shows and I couldn't really earn much money (was 17). I figured the 5150 was a cheaper version of the Dual Rec.

Anyways, lately, I've really been liking the tones I'm able to get out it her. She's been sounding great. I think I've finally found some good sweet spots and (finally) learned how to use an amp properly. I guess it helps that my main axe is a PRS too.

Long story short: I really like the 5150. I do recommend it.

ive always dug the 5150's and would own one by now if there was a 40-60 watt head.

i finally got around to adding your pics. looks sweet dude.

my rack should be coming up in a few months. im going to rackmount my head and get 2 Boss VF-1's. at least, thats what i am planning on for now.

Nice rig.

But......that's gotta be the biggest amp controller I've ever seen. It actually puts the Road King's to shame.

thanks.

oh my god, where to start with the quad, its musical bliss, the clean rivals my old fender blues deluxe (great cleans). the od is great, which what i was missing with my old jmp-1. and the gain powerful. the eq's are really handy, you can actually use both at the same time. i just got all the tubes replaced, they were the originals, what a difference that makes! it is soooo warm and LOUD. paired with the 50-50 i am in a heaven of tone and power.

Nice rig.

But......that's gotta be the biggest amp controller I've ever seen. It actually puts the Road King's to shame

yeah its big, but i like it. i am soooo glad the person i bought it from still had it, they are really hard to find and damn near crucial to have. i wouldnt have bought it if it wasnt included.

overall i am the happiest i have been with my setup ever. i used to have a mesa nomad 55, and it was good, but wasnt the sound i wanted. then i had a marshall combo for a little bit, didnt really like it. i moved to rack with a jmp-1 and hated all the settings and lack of good OD. now i love my sound and cant wait to start gigging with it.

It could be but I've pretty much always run it at bedroom levels with the occasional outburst. Straight from hte Carvin manual...

3. CHANNEL LEVEL CONTROL
A precision 41 step input LEVEL attenuate is used to adjust the volume levels. To deliver the amps full power without reducing headroom of the signal source, the level controls should be turned up approximately 1/3 (15 on the dial).

I use the master output knob on my SGX as a volume control, seems to work really good.

They call the volume controls "level control". I've always run it in stereo mode also so it's 60w/60w but I'm only driving a pair of 8" Jensen speakers. Plans are in-work to build two 2x10 Jensen loaded cabinets with back panels that I can run either closed or open back, should sound sweet.

The BBE Rocks!!! I just got it this last year and I couldn't believe how much highs and lows I was loosing. Definetly the biggest bang for the buck of any rack gear I've come across, and so simple to use, it doesn't get any easier than two knobs.:D

Yeah, I couldn't agree with you more. I have the most basic 362 version and I love it. At some point I'll get a 482i or whatever, but its amazing what the two knobs can do to your tone. Agreed - best bang for your buck. I recommend it to anyone playing guitar.

I finally got a picture of my rack! (http://www.geocities.com/inanis1606/HPIM0682.jpg)

Unless I can find a use for the RBF-10, I'm selling it. The only real thing I use it for these days is to emulate old tape movies, where the sound would kind of go in and out of pitch.

And I'm pretty sure I'm going to sell the GSP-2101, now that I have Guitar Rig.

About the GSP-2101? I just recently began thinking about selling it, since Guitar Rig could replace it. Plus with the money, I could buy that Tascam US-122.

Why, you think I should hold on to it?

i should have edited the quote.

i meant about Guitar Rig.

it seemed you were trying to save up money, and bam, you show up talking about it and wanting to sell off your rig.

id definitely sell the GSP now that you have Guitar Rig.

id like it but couldnt afford to buy anything right now.

It has actual 12AX7 tubes in it, two of them. They add a lot of life to the tone, and add to the distortion. And I agree, the programmability is great. I've come to dislike sitting down and adjusting settings, but at least when I find something I like I can save it.

It's a DOD Dimension 12 delay/sampler. Cool unit.

Guitar Rig is going to be replacing my GSP, but I'm holding on to the GSP until I can get a USB interface and make sure that I can get Guitar Rig working and everything. I'd just feel stupid if I sold my GSP and then found out, for whatever reason, that Guitar Rig won't work on my computer.

Sort of - but I live in Canada. The way it worked for me is that it was cheaper to order it (both the GCX and the GCpro) online in the US (including shipping, currency etc...) than it would be to have any of my local music stores order it and then sell it to me.

Anyways, I ordered it off Tour Supply.com (http://www.toursupply.com). Really great customer service. Go through their E-commerce page. The GCX is $399 and the GCPro is $399 also (US dollars of course) and thats are about as low as prices for those two units go . It may seem like alot, but I think its well worth it! And yeah, midi rules.
