You said to not say Practise
So that leaves me nothing else to say!
Practise is what is all about, repetitive finger excersices, scales, digital patterns, arppegios. Make sure that you play them REALLY slowly before building up speed and that your hands are completely relaxed and you are using minimal effort. This means when you speed it up your fingers are much more efficient.
PRACTISE PRACTISE AND MORE PRACTISE.
Also if your hand starts to hurt after a few excercise then make it more relaxed and slow it down. it takes time to get like Zakk Wylde and Malmsteen man!

mike mccready's technique is not that difficult, its just blues man, just blues... its lots of Hendrix, and Stevie ray vaughan. and let me tell you this man just learn your scales and where to bend to make somebody cry and ****. its just PLAYING. dont practice. PLAY. dont sit down and play a lick till you puke. ITS BORING. just play and play and play.

cheers guys the wizard has the right idea cheers
I agree - just play as much as possible.
And when playing fast, don't just flap your right hand around. Play everything you play with conviction and get used to playing everything clean. If you play fast but sloppy, its gonna sound worse than if you play slower clean.
What I'd do is get my left hand goin nice and smooth. Don't pick every note - be able to hammer on and pull off notes really cleanly. Get some strength and confidence goin in your left hand.
Once you do that, start pickin all the notes. When you're playin fast, economy of motion is real important. Don't swing your hand around, only move it just a little in order to play fast.
Anyway, yeah - play, play play. Listen to players you like and play play play...

A great way to get faster is to use a metronome. Start with a simple pull off lick for example: on the high E string pull off the 5th and 3rd frets to an open string
start with a slow tempo on the metronome and play perfectly. As it becomes easier, gradually increase the tempo remembering to play as perfect as you can and stay in time.the timing should be like this click=1, so click-2-3, click-2-3, click-2-3. Experiment with different patterns and timings as you progress.

getting faster has a lot to do with keeping perfect time. I practice timing while I practice scales with a delay pedal. you sort of fall into your own tempo rather than a metrenome's. dont buy a delay to do this, there are much more affordable ways to practice timing. just try it if you have a delay. ulf!! blorf! do people really snort speed?
