View Full Version : Using a guitar overdrive for a bass guitar.
Can you use a guitar overdrive/distortion with a bass? Will it screw up the pedal?

Sure you can. The best distorted bass sound I ever got was through a Tubescreamer.
I get a nice fuzzy sound out of my MXR Disto+. It won't **** with the pedal at all. The only real danger in combining guit. and bass equipment is that you'll blow speakers--or that you'll sound too trebly.

Bass + Russian-made Big Muff = nice.

Cliff Burton used a Big Muff Pi, so there can't be much wrong with it. I use a Boss HM3 myself, and it sounds great! Just experiment with everything available and find whatever suits your tone.

If you want to check out some nice distorted bass, check out the band in the link below. They have not one...but 2 bass players. They're incredible.

RATM's Tim Commerford used a Marshall DriveMaster (i think, i know it's marshall something) for the bass distortion on the first album.
Also, i've used my Boss ODB-3 Bass Dist on guitar. Which is also fun.

I don't really like my bass distortion pedal, it's too fat and well, bassy. As well as pricy... If you're looking for a sharper distorted sound, I say go for guitar distortion. If you want fatter distorted sound, go for bass distortion. Didn't Krist use guitar distortion for bass solo in "Been a Son"?

i use an Ibanez Seventh Heaven.
it's a distortion pedal meant for 7-string guitars and it has a built in noise gate.
i can get the fuzziest tones out of it, plus it's not noisy.
even at full gain and volume it won't make my amp feedback.

Yeah, the Tubescreamer is great as a bass fuzz, especially if you're using a bass amp with valves. You won't get the total saturation of the Big Muff, but more of a farty, slightly overdriven tone, kind of like Larry Graham on Sly Stone's "Dance to the Music."
I like a little ds-1 on my bass at times. tastes good. and inexpensive compared to some of the other condiments out there.

i like fuzzier distortion on bass, like around the world by RHCP... a nice fuzzy rumble.
On the other end of the spectrum, anyone used a fulltone bass drive for guitar? I'm interested in trying one with guitar, I'm also trying to get my bass player to buy one. ;)
I liked the idea of the proco juggernaut for the guitar too, because of the clean/dirty mix control, but then I found out about the sparkle drive. ;)
