maybe this should be in the amp forum? but somehow i know that folks looking here will be more inclined to understand what im talking about... i need an amp, i was looking at the jc-120, but im not sure, i need great clean tone, and garagey dist sounds

if it would help i can list my pedals/guitars, just ask

thnks, tom

If you want bright clean tones from a SS then the JC120 is probably one of the best.

It would be pretty helpful if you list your pedals (especially distortion).

current rig - im still testing and changing out, but who ever has a completed rig?

strat or gretsch tennessean
(in order)
boss bd-2
big muff
fabtone
boss cs-3
dd-3
daddy-o
ls-2
(modulation loop)
digitech xp-100
boss tr-2
dod fx25b envelop filter
re-201 space echo

i should have a psm-5 coming in soon, so i can split off some of my dist into a loop

also, i just found out how heavy the jc-120 is, also its ss, i hear i should go tube.... maybe the fender twin?

Depends on whether you're actually going to use the tubes or not...if you're going to use/need real power tube distortion, then by all means go tube. however, if you're using mostly pedals for distortion...the JC-120 is an excellent choice. headroom for days, and an excellent chorus to boot.

Aren't Twins heavier than JC-120s? A Twin is like 85 lbs. How heavy are the Rolands?

The JC-120 is 62 lbs according to the PDF on the Roland web site.

i was mainly looking at the versatility of the tubes, if i wanted i could ditch all my pedals and play "rock band". where as with out any pedals on the jc, i would be limited to clean sounds...

i didnt realize the twins were that heavy, i will hafta check into it...

Ampegs. V4 and VT-22's seem to be everywhere now.

hey

i think you could consider a fender super reverb. 10 inch speakers create a softer sound with less flapping. i have one and love it.

if you want to go with 2x12 jc 120 is great, fender twin is great also.

maybe also consider an ampeg super rocket (sr-212rt). it has 2x12" speakers and reverb and tremolo and its all tube with 100 watts intead of the twin reverbs 85 watts.

another amazing 2x12 tube amp is the traynor YCV80. 80watts made in toronto canada, built like a tank. made to be dropped down a flight of stairs and play like new every time. this thing come s with reverb and a bost chanal. not many people know of traynor out side of canada but they have been around for years... since the early 60's and they're stuff is great.

If youre looking at the JC-120 but want more dirty options check out an Acoustic (Control Corp) ss amp. Some have built in distortion circuits. Good for all kinds of stuff. And I've found them to have a really wide frequency range which I find handy with more experimental stuff. Gotta get the lows low :)

If you get a JC-x series amp then consider getting a Sans Amp GT-2 distortion. Since it is a modeling distortion pedal, it should do quite nicely. I've read nice review on Harmony Central about GT-2 into JC-120 also.

Musicman amps! Great cleans, incredible headroom!

Note: I would never suggest a JC-120 for anything. Terrible toneless amps IMO.

ah well. i ended up with a used jc-120 for 450 bucks.. i like it, thinking of getting some sort of rack to get more dirt options...

I think we should keep this thread going because it's really been a difficult situation for me. I know the best cleans and most headroom seems to draw the Fender Twin reverb and the Ampeg VT-22 or V-4 as highly recommended.

Any other suggestions for ambient guitar playing?

i'm trying to stay away from solid state as are alot of the ambient players on this board and those I have talked to. The Vt-22 is near impossible to get with original tubes and the Twin reverb is awfully expensive.

How about this. I may have the opportunity to get a vintage 2x8 Gibson cabinet with original speakers. The previous owner says the speakers are tanks and can handle alot of volume. He's running a 100w Acoustic Head into it with no problems. Could this be a possible good choice for me with the proper head? Or maybe even with a power amp and amp modeler? I don't know.

Even if you can't answer my question, lets keep this thread going for all the ambient guitarists in need of the right amp.

I feel like you just insulted my mother...

(in actual fact though, i'm saving for [too many things, but one of them happens to be] a Fender Twin 15" special, as i'm just so sure that could be dangerous in my hands. Between that, the 120 and a JCM 900 I think i'll have my bases covered for all seasons...

I would NOT trust a 8 inch speaker with alot of signal going through it to not distort.

what about a bassman with a 2x15? Or a Ampeg V25? HEll, even a traynor Mark III twin clone. Actually, that isn;t a bad idea and with a speaker change would be killer.

I'll do some research today, thanks.

Anyone else use anything interesting for amplification for this type of music? How about pods and other amp modelers? Besides computers what do people feed them into?

Looking for suggestions for new speakers in my 2x12 open back cab. I currently have two Gibson Ultrasonics. I'm looking for pedal friendly, warm (not hot), high headroom, able to handle sounds from classic Tele twang to highly modulated sounds and medium dirt.

anyone? anyone? Bueller?

I SECOND THIS option i had this amp. great sounding cleans...best i ever heard to my ears. i loved it. just didnt need it really. it was just a hassle live. switching and routing etc...but someday when im on tour and have a tech or something that can set this all up...with multiple cabs then ill buy another one for sure!!!
