Ok, I've been playing guitar for a year, and I've restrung without any problems several times. Now, my bands bassist quit, so I played bass for a while, but now I'm back to guitar. The strings on the bass are worn out (they've never been changed in... a long time). Unfortunately, I cannot figure out how to put on the new strings. Rather than a hole through the tuning peg, theres a hole on the top. The string is way too long to just stick the end in the hole and tighten, the way the other strings seem to be. I'm reluctant to cut or anything before I know what Im doing, so... any suggestions? its an Ibanez SDGR SR 400.

Edit: I looked on the Ibanez website and it says to cut them. how much extra should I leave past the post, and what should I use to cut them? just normal wireclippers?

and wow. I measured the string to the other string about 10 times, made sure I gave it some extra for the part that winds around the peg, cut it, and now I have a string thats about 1 cm short of the peg. I get to buy a new string!

yeah, just use regular wire cutters...Be sure you pull on the string while putting them on, like you would do with guitar strings....

I felt your pain the firsat time I restrung too. Make sure you threading the sytring through the bridge when you measuring and give about 1.5 in to 2 inches extra past the peg. Thats how I do it know and it gives me play for when I need to boil them because I can't afford new string all the time, if bass strings wernt so expensive I would buy every time. I play GHS boomers $20 and when I feel rich I play the $35 infinity steel GHS strings.
