Is It Possible To Put Effects Into A Guitar?

I've always thought that that would be such a kl thing to just have effects programmed into your guitar and cud just be activated at the click of a switch or sumin'. So if you were playing live with your band and you were miles away from your footboard you wouldn't have a problem.

Also if it is possible.......HOW?!?!?!!!?!!

Cheers

sumin' should be done about spelling "sumin" like that.

Danelectro Innuendo:

Buy one, take it apart, figure out how it works, apply it to your own guitar.

If you want to see a guitar with built in effects, look here:

I stumbled across it looking for Z.Vex prices in th UK.

You just put the effect between the final switch and the output jack. The big problem though can be finding the space for the effect PCB. With the exception of perhaps MXR's any effect would be a tighfit inside your exam.

That's a cool guitar, I'd expand on it though, adding a second dimension to the MIDI controller so it could control a KAOSS pad.

Gretsch Super Axe had built in effects. They show up on ebay once in a while. Also the japanese baritone jaguar 'Bottom Master' (heh heh) has a built in fuzz circuit.

Yeah it is, one of five if I remember correctly. That one is probably the most complex since it has all the MIDI controllers.

one of my friends has found danelectros handy for placing effects in, as they have hollow sections and lots of real estate for controls.

i'm currently drooling for this. (http://www.dipintoguitars.com/vintage/solid%20electrics/galaxieWithFuzz.htm)

Bo Diddley's guitar has a couple of built-in effects. If I remember correctly one is for Echo - I 'm not sure about the other one. This isn't the best picture but you can see the knobs:

I'd like to install a tuna melt tremolo in my jazzmaster...

that would be cool.

The Jazzmaster does have a built-in pitch-shifter, y'know ;) All-analog too.

I believe there was a Gretsch custom-made for someone (I want to say Chet Atkins but I'm not sure) that had a built-in phaser and compressor. I saw it in an old Vintage Guitar magazine.

To me, it's not really worth it. Here's a rundown of the advantages and disadvantages.
The pros:
-activate them from anywhere onstage
-if you only use a couple and put them in your guitar, you'd be able to go straight from guitar to amp
-easy knob-twiddling
The cons:
-you have to stop playing to turn it on
-requires HEAVY modification to guitar (hollowing out mucho space for circuit boards and drilling extra holes for knobs and switches
-you have to throw down money on batteries, or else you have a power supply cord limiting your movement.
-if you change your mind about the effect, it's a hassle to take out and sell.

So those are the pros and cons. It's ultimately up to you to decide if it's worth it, but the way things are, with pedals on the floor, is just much easier for most.

the only effect that I could see being worth having at hand would be delay. there are so many great sounds from knob twisting on a delay that would be easier to perform if it were attached to the guitar.
when I was waiting in line to go see muse there awas a kid on the street with a beat up strat with a dd-3 just taped to the front of it. it was pretty sweet. great Idea if you have a dedicated guitar for it. or better velcro it!

I just saw muse at the metro a few weeks ago. The built in effects were sweet. Best concert i've ever seen.

Ive done that before. It weighs the guitar down and is a bitch to play. It was a metalzone too... was i ever that young?

(EDIT)

I cant see the point in building effects into guitars. (ive argued this a lot on the muse message board too)

Its only good if you play huge stages, lets be honest, who does that?

You need to have one in every guitar you use as well

Pros, you get a cool website and a load of crazy fans of your guitars like matt belamy has.

That's what Matt did before he got Manson to make guitars with built in effects. I think Dave Grohl did that too at the beginning of the Foo Fighters.

One of the Smashing Pumpkins taped a Small Stone to their guitar, or at least so claimed an EH ad from a few years back.

i think it'd be cool to hook up a Super Hard-On to your volume knob, to give it hellza range.

second that! it would be like an ordinary volume pedal just that when you turn the knob to 10 there would be a track or click or whatever you would like to call it and if you pushed it harder it would go into superhardon-mode :D

brilliant idea!

its super easy to build simple effects into your guitar(fuzz, od, distortion etc..) but when you get in to more complex circuits thats where the trouble starts

didnt james iha tape his chorus to his guitar??

i dont really see the need... my hands are doing enough durring a set anyway...

i think vox used to make guitars with 5-6 different effects in them.. same with danelectro

isnt there a mod you can do to your tone pot, iirc adding different capacitors or some **** to make it sound like a wah sweep?

Id love to have 2 tone pots, 1 for that and 1 for normal tone control. Maybe with a switch.

Easiest way is to take ciruitry from an effect pedal, find an area that is easily accesible in the rear area of your guitar, and rout it to make room for the PCP or HW unit. Remove the wires from the output jack of the guitar and place them on the input of the device. Attach the output of the ciruit to the output of the guitar. Drill on the top of your guitar down, or up from the bottom, then place a minitoggle switch in the area to switch the effect on and off. It will be very difficult to adjust the unit however.
