I had a date with a woman who wi-fi's. I have been looking at wi-fi cards for my desktop computer, but...

...what I really want is a laptop, soz I can tap into "hotspots" while I am out in the field. I can sit at a coffee house on a half hour break or so (in the middle of running errands), look at women and do internet stuff.

I've wardrived a few times and there's a few spots downtown (the few I'm aware of) that are/were easily crackable networks for, you know, stuff.

I have a wireless network in my folks house. It works pretty well.

My work is a "hotspot". I could see it being convenient for time between classes and stuff.

I didn't know what wi-fi meant prior to reading beyond this point, so at first, I thought this was new guy lingo for "dating a woman who gives blowjobs."

No disrespect, G6add9...just the first thought that came into my head. :p

Does your girlfriend give good wi-fi?

Ignore me, I'm drunk. ;)

Yeah, I have a wi-fi rig in my apartment - ironic, isn't it, because there's nowhere in my studio apartment a 25 foot cable wouldn't reach.

Except maybe the bathroom. But I personally don't post to GG while I'm on the can.

it was the coolest thing, we brought our laptop to NYC over spring break, and we could connect to idiot people's WiFi access points for free because they didn't change the default settings, so we could chill in the hotel room and surf the web!

I have my choice of about 8 different wireless networks at various locations I may be, and they are always changing! it's nuts. NYC is just one big hot spot at this point and I don't think anyone really cares about security. Real hackers have no interest in an easy lay anyway.

Then you hook up a little antennae to your wi-fi card and it uses cellular or mobile frequencies to tap into a server so you can get on to the world wide web. Think of it as a mobile phone that you use to get online with, rather than place a cell call with.

so I wanna get a desktop Wireless USB device so I can temporarily get free internet from neighborhood hotspots until I start my new job in April.

Is this what I should get: Netgear WG111T 108Mbps Wireless-G USB Adapter (http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4300195?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG)

here is the detailed description: http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4300195#detailed

Is that all I will need for my desktop computer?

well, I've been WiFi-ing now for about 2 months. I bought this little do-hickey:

NETGEAR WG311 54Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter, 802.11g (http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=305296&pfp=SEARCH).

It's very handy!

Google Inc. has offered to blanket San Francisco with free wireless Internet access at no cost to the city (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2005/10/01/MNGG9F16KG1.DTL)...The proposal raises speculation that Google intends to create a free national Wi-Fi network, a business in which the company has limited experience. If so, it could pose a serious challenge to existing Internet service providers such as SBC-Yahoo, Earthlink, Comcast and America Online, which charge subscriptions for wire connections - SF Chronicle

Earthlink is going after Philadelphia too:
