View Full Version : Q: What would u play at an open mike night show? (2 song limit)
Scenario: You get to play 2 songs (10 minutes total time) at a pub in front of a "college-type" audience.
Q::::: What 2 songs would you play?
I am kicking around the following ideas:[list=1]
"Blank" - Billy Corgan (http://www.maxlyrics.com/songView/1768)
something by Buffalo Tom :)

With a good band and a good singer?
"Above Me" by Rufio to warm up, and then "NIB" by Black Sabbath to bring the house down.
"Above Me" has this crazy intro riff, and the whole song is pretty fast paced, so it would force the band to get their playing together early, and I have a way building "NIB" up that would be sure to have the folks cheering.

"Step Right Up" - Tom waits
"Romeo Is Bleeding" - Tom waits

I'm guessing this is just solo, and with a belly full of beer - so something that would work well acoustic and easy to sing along too...
hmmm....
'dreams burn down' - ride
'rock'n roll' - the brilliant green
and I'd probably have 'cherub rock' as a backup.
Ice age coming

The Beatles - Blackbird
Radiohead - Knives Out

oo.. another fan?
they're a bit of an obsession for me - hence my website (http://www.brilliantgreen.net/)
I chose Rock'n Roll, but some of the Los Angeles stuff works amazingly well acoustic.
I'd choose between these four songs, depending on the mood:
Originals
Lie Lie
No Dates or Names
Covers
Extreme - More Than Words
Tony Rich Project - Nobody Knows
Are those covers a little cheesy? Yes they are, but generally the ladies love em. I'll be posting a demo of 'Lie Lie' at some point so you can see if you think it would stand up at an open mic night next to those covers.

Dude, are you serious?
With the death vocals and prog metal guitars and ****?
Nice!
Especially if it was all acoustic. That would be mighty impressive.

we usually do "dead flowers", and after the 2nd chorus, we do 2 verses of "used to love her" before going back to "dead flowers." that usually raises some eybrows in a really cool way.
then we'd do an original called "goddamn shame."
those 2 usually get the best response when we've played open mic nights around here.

acoustic, i'd probably play ...
1. an original (one of my more ballad-y tunes).
2. a cover ... probably britney spears. " ... baby one more time"
or something sing-a-long-y.

Swing Life Away By Rise Against

Hmmm... Open Mike? College audience?
Well, assuming with accoustic I'd go for:
Lady In Black - Uriah Heep (A tune I can play no matter how drunk)
Kryptonite - 3 Doors Down (In case I sobered up a bit! :D )
And in case I didn't I'd also go with the Nigel Tufnell solo. It Rocks!

Now, I wanna play:"Stay" (acoustic version) by U2 (as played live in Boston, MA on the "Elevation Tour") :)
The second might be "Pets" by ****o For Pyros :p
....we'll make great pets!
I love open mic nights. It depends on my mood and how much I do or do not want to piss off the crowd.
If I do:
1)I play a bitchen version of "what a girl wants" by Christina A. It rules because people all look like they know what song it is, but just can't quite put their finger on it until the chorus. It is funny when a dude sings it.
2)Either F*&^ Her Gently by the D (which I have run the only two people at one open mic night out with) or Chop Suy by System (again, anything works with the right dynamics and arangement.
If I don't want to piss the place off:
1)Paraniod Android by radiohead
2)everything reminds me of her by Elliot Smith(RIP)

the clap-yes [try playing that, heh]
blister in the sun-the violent femmes
alternatives:
Everlong -foo fighters [acoustic version]
pardon me - incubus
windowpane-Opeth
down in splendour-straitjacket fits (great band!)
Mist- john butler trio
zebra- john butler trio
pink panther theme song ;)
ohhh boy. i played an open mic night like 3 years ago... just me and a drummer and some guy who told us he could sing. we played
cherub rock
dumb (nirvana)
we SUCKED. luckily there was an attitude that suckiness was expected and we got some props for trying.
now i think i would play
st louise is listening (soul coughing)
riches (jane's addiction)
both of these have lots of room for soloing and having fun.
I just did this last night, although I got 15 min,
I chose Nothing Compares 2 U - Mrs. O'connor by way of Prince
Then an Original of mine
and I followed it out with There is a light that never goes out - The smiths

I'd do a quick acoustic set;
Pumpkin's - Disarm
Nirvana - Pennyroyal Tea
Dan the Man
07.08.05, 7:42 PM
I would also do an acoustic set:
Napalm Death - You Suffer
John Cage - 4'33''
devankdevank
07.08.05, 7:51 PM
Stuff I'd consider acoustic:
•Wish You Were Here
•In The Car - BNL
•Some Beck song from Sea Change, Lost Cause maybe?
•Just Like Heaven - The Cure
•Unintended - Muse
•Super Mario Brothers theme
All of those would be good acoustic.
grandaddys nebraska and qotsa's in the fade, cause my pot'd throat sounds all sexy in the baritone spectrum of soundness. just live till you dieee, the crowd really dug that. and lol @ the ****o for pyros, its a shame that didnt work out.

1. Hammering the Cramps by Sparklehorse, because it would bewilder the Audience: "Is he singing about hitting crabs with a hammer? Sick bastard!"
2. Free Bird by Lynard Skynard, for the obvious reason.

That would be pretty wicked....you should do both of "Patterns in the Ivy" ones I think they're called
If I just went up with an acoustic....I would probably just have it in drop d and play Everlong by the Foo Fighters and I Miss You by Incubus

oh god, you think thats funny, you gotta hear this. this doesn't have to do with open mikes, but it relates to what you do.
when i was in high school, my freshman year at the annual talent show this gay kid did a cheesy carabet-style dance & lip sync to "Sometimes" by Britney Spears. half the kids thought it was a riot, the other half wanted to kick his ass. the sad thing is, as goofy as it was i think he was being totally serious. thinking back i kinda feel bad for him on a lot of levels.
