i can play with two or three fingers, but when I try to play with four, my pinky is too short to be used, any suggestions?

I'm assuming your talking about your picking hand....**** man...I can get good speed with 2 fingers..I use 3 fingers for triplets...Why in hell would you possibly need a 4 finger technique?
because a lot of songs I play need that much speed
Well, other than shortening your other three fingers the only option seems to be to keep practicing.

You could try changing the angle of your hand so the pinky is closer to the strings.

Yeah, aimed my fingers a little more to the left and so now my pinky isn't too short to reach, but my pinky and ring fingers hit the string at the same time, I can move one without moving th other
im having this problem myself... i rest my thumb on the bridge pickup and pick at about the neck pickup, so the angle works out with the pinky...
tell me how it works out
btw 4 fingers are for 64th notes...

oh yea, I've been using four fingers since around christmas. it came sort of natural to me. I picked it up without much of a problem(I've been playing for 3 years) I was inspired by a video with some that I found by chance on KaZaA a couple years ago with a bass player who blew my mind. I thought he was using four fingers but later found out that the bass player, a certain Billy Sheehan, used only 3. but I still liked the idea of four fingers because I am the only person that uses four that I know of.
about the pinkie angle problems, just change your angle up a little bit if you have shorter fingers. I got huge Billy Sheehan/Steve Vai fingers so my pinkie length wasn't a problem. I just worked on getting a consistent rhythm(8th notes, 16th notes, etc.) out of my picking hand and then once I became fluid I started synchronizing my right and left hands and I'm still not Petrucci clean, but I'm getting there.
I just use four because three is too confusing for 4/4 time and two wasn't fast enough for me. since I am left handed but play right handed bass, I sat in school for the first bit starting out just tapping my fingers on my desk and trying to get it consistent. just tapping 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4...etc. I can't tell you much about how I got my left and right hand synchronized though.
I don't really know how, I just know I improved a little bit every day. I hope this helped.

uhh, hey i know thi is an old topic, but ive been trying this whole time to play with 4 fingers and i still cant get it. Did anyone else do any better?
