just wondering how many of you are recording bass at home?

i'm splitting my signal with a boss rv-3 reverb. one signal goes into bass sansamp bass driver DI > dbx 166 to the board and the other goes through an art tube pre > dbx 166 to the board. I'm getting ok bass tones by mixing the two but would like to try other methods...

any suggestions?

Well first could you tell me what the dbx 166 is.
I'm recording with a band now and we have a dbx tube pre very much like the art one and I find If I use any effects before the pre amp I get a very flat and plain sound.

Personally with your set up i'd run the sans amp first then out of the parrallel output (Unaffected) go into the art then in to the reverb and if the dbx is and effects processor try recording with out it direct to the board. This set up would give you a dry tube sound (Sans amp) and a wet effected one with the art and reverb but I always try to get the pre before and effects or put the effects in the effects loop on the board and add them to the sound accordingly.

Hope this helps

Let me know if you need more help.

hey...

i guess i should have clarified that i'm only using the boss rv-3 to split the signal. i hate recording bass with effects... especially reverb!

the dbx166 is an older compressor/limiter rack deal with a great tight sound.

the only reason i don't use the sansamp to split the signal is it adds a little noise (old apartment with wacky power is my guess)

Why do you have to split the signal. I only do it occasionally i'd just go art into dbx in to mixer keep it simple that always work best.
Try a battery in the sans amp if you that desperate on spliting the signal.

I'd record the track twice once clean and one witha higher gain and mix them together.

Hope that helps.

i split the signal so i can have one sansamp signal and one direct tube pre signal. i apply amp sim plugins (IK amplitube) to the direct signal within cubase. it just gives me more choices to mess with and blend.

recording the same part twice? haha ... i can barely record a track of bass once! (bloody fingers!)

Just use cubase to copy the bass line so you have 2 of the same line and then use the built in effects of cubase to alter one of them. This is why we use digital stuff.

Hey if you pay me enough I'll come over and record all your lines for you :D

i've done the copy/paster thing and it works great. i guess i just like the two different tones that the sansamp and direct signal offer me.

i can pay you in pedal icons for bass recording :)
