first of all, i'd just like to say hi, i'm just a lazy bum who got a beginner's guitar and a 4-watt practice amp for christmas, but since i can only play two chords ive been a bit discouraged. that, and as i said, i'm lazy.

anyway, to get the point of this post, i have a question: there's this certain guitar "effect" and i've always wondered how it is achived...i tried to describe it to a friend of mine who's in a band but i couldn't...i describe it as kind of a "dragging" sound...the best examples i can think of are the very beginning of nirvana's "paper cuts" and various sonic youth songs.

if this isn't the place to ask i apologize, but it's been driving me up the wall! thanks in advance.

its called a pick scrape. no pedals required.
Grab your pick and scrape one edge of it along your wound strings.
