View Full Version : What's that guitar Kurt Cobain uses in the 'Heart Shaped Box' video?
i downloaded the heart shaped box video off the net some time, and ive been wondering what that white guitar he's using is. I've read he uses fender mustangs and fender jaguars and fender strats. But ive looked at all those guitars and they arent anything like the guitar in the video.
Uh.also..am i allowed to ask two questions in one thread? Save space you know? since both are gutiar related..
Question No. 2!
I own a yamaha RGX121SJ and was thinking of switching the pickups...i dunno...my tone is well..just plain. Not bad but plain. And i have a habit of customising things.
I was wondering if these are good pickup choices or if they're bad or whatever. I'd play any style really, maybe not too light and not too heavy, but good cleans are essential.
Neck : Seymour Duncan JB : 70$ \ Seymour Duncan Alcino Pro II \ Seymour Duncan SH-1 ’59 : 70$
Bridge : Seymour Duncan SH-6 Distortion : 70$ \ Seymour Duncan JB : 70$ \ Di Marzio DP100 Super Distortion : 70$ \ Seymour Duncan SH-1 ’59 : 70$
I'm looking for more...well 'vintage' tone as opposed to the tone you hear when u turn on that cursed radio.
Thanks..

uh..well its white with two humbuckers, a double cutaway sort of body, kinda big and wide looking... i thought it might have been a double cutaway les paul but it seems too thing and too wide..
Been a long time but I seem to recall it's a Univox Hi-Flyer.

The pickups you mention are very popular on this forum. I've played most of them myself, except the Super Distortion.
My feeling is that nearly everything you list up there would be a good choice, with the exception of the JB in the neck. The JB should only be installed in the bridge position, due to its voicing and its high output.
A guitar with a JB in the bridge and a '59 in the neck is extremely flexible, and when you consider the middle position on the switch, you get an array of six great tones possible (3 clean, 3 dirty, all good.) The '59 of course is the 'vintage' voiced pickup; the Alnico Pro II is also vintage, with more sweetness and less bite. The JB and Distortion are both 'modern' voiced.
You can pick up nearly any of the above p/u's on ebay for $70, or maybe $60 if you look hard enough or don't mind a used one.
hm..
thanks everyone on the guitar thing....i checked it and yeah..it's the same as in the video...but it kinda looked better in the video to me....
and thanks for the advice on the pickups...
now i just gotta figure out exactly which ones...

For"vintage" sound you should really look more to the Alnico IIs or get 59's for both the bridge & neck
Is that FLCL on your avatar? That anime made me want to get a Flying V bass:D

Great video...one of my all-time favorites. My avatar is a still I took from the uncut version (where Kurt is lying in a field of poppies) that I colorized using Photo Shop. :)

Kurt Cobain on SNL playing the Hi-Flyer and Pat playing the Mosrite... That image will stay with me for a long time.
oh. i have another question
what single coil would basically match outputs with a '59 or alcino pro in the neck and a JB in the bridge?
because my guitar is a HSH configuration and i've also noticed my stock single coil is a fair decrease in volume when im using it clean.
i was thinking Lace Sensor Gold's..for a sorta vintage strat sound which i'm kinda looking to get.

The Univox Hi Flyer Customs(the ones from '68-71 I think)had the P-90 single coils. After that they started putting humbuckers in them. Kurt Cobain used them alot in the early Nirvana days. He also smashed more than a handful of them. I have a Univox Hi Flyer custom sunburst with the P-90s. You can buy them on Ebay.

Get a JB. Kurt used those in his mustangs. I just picked one up the other day for my DR500 and it sounds so much better now. Scored a deal so I tried it.

1. Caution: I bought one of those Jagstangs that Curt thought of just before he died, and it was really awful. Took it back. It would need a lot of work to get it to sound good.
2. The p'up configuartion you are thinking about is stock on all Schecter Blackjacks, if you'd rather just get a guitar set up that way (around $550) or would like to play one already set up that way.
