View Full Version : Stringing Backwards (sort of...)

I was recently at a guitar shop and was going to upgrade my tuners. The manager tells me to keep the tuners (I have an Epi SG) and put string it from the otherside of the tailpiece, and wrap it over the tailpiece and string it the normal way from there. (Sorry, I'm not good with describing this) Apparently, it's something that Zakk Wylde does to keep his strings from breaking and in tune better. Has anyone tried this with an SG or Les Paul style guitar?

Yeah heaps of people do it here... most like it.

Someone will come along to tell you about it. :)

i do it

it makes it reallllllly nice and lowers the string tension DRAMATICLY

It feels and plays smooth and easy

Yes.

It reduces the angle of the strings over the bridge saddles, which cause less strings to break. It also loosens the string tension slightly (due to the increased distance between the bridge and tailpiece).

In my opinion, it does nothing for tuning stability. I have an Epi too, and new tuners are my next upgrade. The stock ones suck ass.

yeah, that's how i strung my epi les paul. lowers tension, i felt it helped sustain, but that could be a placebo effect.

I use to do that, here's a pic of mine:

But after talking to the guys at my guitar shop, they suggest raising the tailpiece instead. Both felt the same actually.

But it's definitely better that screwing the tailpiece all the way down and string em regularly.

hey fakeplastic, why do you remove the g string on your guitar???

It was sort of an accident at first. My guitar fell and the G-Tuner snapped. Now, I actually like it. I retuned it EAD_AE, and am digging it. I'm going to have to pick up another guitar for my more "standard" stuff though. If anyone's got a Bullet they want to sell me, that would be lovely. :)

you put the string in on the side facing the pickups and you just wrap it over the top of the bridge

i used to use that methood regularly, but i decided that the decreased string tension was causing too much fret buzz, so.. here i am.

One note about that method...

My SG required some tweaking with the intonation after I strung it that way. So be sure to check it out after you change methods. It wasn't badly off but it wasn't the best it could be.

Every time I decide to do this, I get all nervous about the string catching on the tailpiece and something going all crazylike. Anyone know a way around this? I hear of cutting the tailpiece so it has a groove for the string, but that just sounds like a bit much.
